Harvest Moon Creator’s Next Game Is Hometown Story

By Ishaan . March 4, 2013 . 10:30am

Last year, Harvest Moon creator, Yasuhiro Wada, revealed his next game, Project Happiness, slated for release on the Nintendo 3DS (and mobile phones in some form as well). This game now has a new title—Hometown Story. Wada’s company, Toybox, revealed the new title along with a new trailer via Famitsu.com:

Hometown Story is about making a wish come true, Wada shared with Siliconera last year. The game is built upon ideas that Wada had before he created the Harvest Moon series, and is currently 50-60% of the way through development.

Hometown Story will be published in North America by Natsume and in Europe by Rising Star Games.

looks fun, the 2d character portraits are kind of meh though >_>

  • PuddlesPuddles

Looks good, but . . . worst voiceover ever.

  • mervilles

So, it’s Recettear with horrible portraits and music made by Nobou?
    I’m.. in?

  • Barrylocke89

Take a base dough of Harvest Moon, flaked with Recettear shop managing. Layer on some Uematsu music and garnish the top with Pokemon designer Nishida. Sprinkle in a decent helping of good ol’ heartwarming diabetes…and apparently you get this game.

    I guess we’ll see how this goes…

  • riceisnice

This is an Eshop game right?

  • puchinri

It looks simple and fun enough. I’ll probably get it, supposing it’s priced right.
Even though I like the general character designs, I don’t feel that the art or graphics are doing them much justice (the backgrounds look nice though).

  • Taylor Greene

    Im in.

  • JMaster3000

Tbh right now i don’t give a f*ck about Hometown Story.
I want that Rising Star Games releases Rune Factory 4 and Harvest Moon 3DS ALREADY!!!(So hyped for Rune Factory 4!!)

    • KotaroInugami

      Harvest Moon 3DS? New Beginnings?

      • JMaster3000

    • Enzo

You really seem to know nearly nothing about these games and the 3DS. #1) North America already has A New Beginning
#2) Rising Star Games has nothing to do with Rune Factory 4 and A New Beginning
#3) XSEED is publishing Rune Factory 4, and will be released this summer
#4) This announcement has nothing to do with what you said, because of the three points I made above.

      • Suicunesol

Did you stop to think that maybe the guy lives in Europe where A New Beginning hasn’t been released yet?

      • JMaster3000

        1)Europe doesn’t have it
2)They are the only company who releases HM and RF games in Europe
3)I know that but not for Europe.
4)It does have to do with Rising Star Games.

        Not everyone is from USA..

        • Enzo

I didn’t quite assume you were from the USA. I only inferred it from (So hyped for Rune Factory 4) because I don’t recall a European localization being announced.

  • Embryon

Wait, seriously? It’s being published in North America? I hadn’t heard, so this is great news!

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Yeah, I don’t remember hearing this was getting localized either…

    • I think the English voiceover is just in there as a gimmick. Might have Rising Star doing some kind of tandem translation, though, even if that would be unusual for a project like this.

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

When project happiness was first announced it was also announced on Natsume USA website, so i think the chance of that getting localized is quite high.

  • SirRichard

Was wondering what happened to this, glad to see it resurface. You can definitely tell it’s got Harvest Moon in it, here’s hoping it turns out well. I’m glad they’ve already got publishers on for the West, shows that they really want to, well, spread the happiness.

  • NimbusStev

It’s a cool idea and I respect him for following up on his dream game but man… that art makes me sick to my stomach. I hate to be judgmental but there is absolutely no way I could sit through a game with that art style. The same thing happened with Level 5’s Fantasy Life. I was hyped up by the idea of the game, but when I saw the art direction I just lost all interest.

  • Hmmmmmmmmm.

  • Suicunesol

I think the main gripe here is that it looks too low budget. Like the graphics barely qualify. It doesn’t look “bad”, but the trailer leaves me uncertain despite the names attached to it.

  • Will Jay

It looks like it has as much effort put into it as most recent HM’s, to be honest. The difference is the art style is extremely simplistic and oh god that logo is terrible what the fuck. It looks like clip art in Word or something.

Could still be a good game. And, only 50% done, so maybe animations will be cleaned up, but yeah, it definitely is gonna need a good deal more polish and finesse.

  • tubers

    It looks so cheap.

Wonder if they’ll charge full retail.

  • Philip Irwin

…Yeah, not really feeling the… Touch of charm I feel for the Harvest Moon series. Looks like they took Reccetear, combined it with Harvest Moon and stripped the more interesting gameplay components from those two titles out of this game.

I think I’ll just stick to giving whatever Yoshifumi Hashimoto makes a try. Maybe we’ll get another flawed but intriguing title like Avalon Code out of him soon, except this time we’ll get a gameplay system that’s a little more clear cut on how it works, combat that’s a bit more intuitive and more player choices that affect the overall plot.

Seriously, I enjoyed what Avalon Code had to offer but got frustrated with its problems way too often. I appreciate it’s attempts to mash together adventure game styled problems solving with puzzle game difficulty and RPG gameplay mechanics, but perhaps trying to do so much and under such a tight schedule hurt the game in the long run. It felt like it needed just a little more time in the oven to bake if you get what I mean.

  • Coeurl

Anyone else getting Winnie the Pooh vibes from the narrator?

But yeah, this looks like the kind of game i’d put countless hours into. The art may be a bit meh but i’m all over Jin if/when he turns out to be a marriage candidate~

  • Swaggermuffin

so the guy who did harvest moon is making something new, yeah okay whatever

  • ShawnOtakuSomething
  • Lester Paredes

Aww. It looks sooo cute! I love harvest moon (an addiction passed onto me by my wife) and this looks like a nice, relaxing game to play.
