By Ishaan . March 6, 2013 . 3:00pm

As previously reported, Mewtwo is returning for the next Pokémon movie, titled Extremespeed Genesect: MewTwo’s Awakening. This afternoon, The Pokémon Company shared a new promotional video for the movie, giving a look at Mewtwo, who shows up to save Ash and co. from Genesect:

Pokémon the Movie: ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo’s Awakening will debut in Japanese theatres on July 13th. The accompanying short, which stars Pikachu and a bunch of Eeevee evolutions, will introduce Sylveon, a new Pokémon from the upcoming games, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

  • LIKE A BOSS! Gave me goosebumps seeing Mewtwo come in. Hopefully the movie lives up to its massive potential… and gets Mewtwo back in Smash 4! :(

  • Martian Wong

Welcome back Mewtwo, my favorite pokemon since the first movie~

  • Shinji Kazuya

Man, so much nostalgia just fom seeing Mewtwo. I’m gonna watch this Pokémon movie, that’s for sure!

  • Solomon_Kano

The last Pokemon movie I watched was Arceus and the Jewel of Life, last one I liked was the Pokemon Ranger one, but this… Mewtwo being back is something I’ve gotta watch. Wondering how and why he shows up, especially after Mewtwo Returns.

  • I felt like a kid again, that made me so excited hahaha

  • riceisnice

How many years has it been since Ash last saw Mewtwo? He’s probably gonna question how Ash is still so young.

    • Spirit Macardi

Supposedly Ash is still only 10 despite the time involved in traversing several continents.

      • LynxAmali

        We call those….
        *puts on sunglasses*

      • Miss_Madness

As anyone ever thought that maybe time just moves super slowly in anime pokemon world. Sort of like DBZ were five minutes took so many episodes to get though.

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Naw man that episodes before Android was like one or two episode then 2 years passed LOL

    • Unfortunately, Ash traded his skill in Pokemon battling in exchange for eternal youth

      • Renaldi Saputra

not only skills, but also knowledge..
he even need to see pokedex again when seeing Koffing in Best Wishes although he actually had seen in the very first season

    • Carol Alfonso

In the world of Pokemon, age is never a question! Ash is always 10 years old! :)

      • Anesia Hunter

tell that to all of the characters outside of the anime. they actually grow up. >.>

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      That easy.
He got killed by Mewtwo and Mew blast in the first movie. Then when after all that. He woke up and it was just a dream.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

      Easy. Ash is a Highlander

      • Solomon_Kano

        There can only be one!

        • Vash bane

    • Wait, Ashe is still starring in the films?

I feel so old now. I remember watching the first film in the cinema.

      • zephyrsword

If Ashe from FFXII was in pokemon perhaps I’d watch it a bit more.

    • natchu96

Heh, never understood this. The episode count is already well over 365 and has been that way for quite a long while . . . and in multiple episodes they spend several days on the issue of the unspecified-amount-of-time-that-is-not-a-day.

Never mind the traveling that they obviously cut.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        365?? now it’s 700++

      • zephyrsword

Not to mention the first season of pokemon Ash actually mentions that he was away from home for about three months or more. With that logic in mind, he should be 15 or more by now. Gamefreak logic.

        • J_Joestar

Maybe a year in the Pokemon world simply has a lot more days than earth, i mean, Ash is still 10 according to the BW anime.

    • Sergio Briceño

He is probably going to ask “Hey ash! You a Poké master yet?” *troll face*.

  • Spirit Macardi

I SO hope that Mewtwo returning means Dan Green will be back to voice him in the eventual dub!

    • AuraGuyChris

His wife died two years ago during childbirth and he has stopped dubbing anything ever since.

      • Spirit Macardi

I was going to question him quitting, but I looked it up and you’re indeed correct… Damn…

Makes me wonder what he’ll do now, considering voice acting was his career and he has his two children to provide for…

    • LynxAmali

Considering that they aren’t using original studio for the dub anymore and its being handled directly by the Pokemon Company……….

      • Spirit Macardi

The new company is still New York based though, and they actually did bring back some of the former 4Kids actors (not always for the same parts they played before, but still). Dan in-particular had a larger role as a Team Rocket agent.

As the other person said though, it seems the poor guy has left the dubbing scene due to the dearth of work available in the NY area. As loathe as 4Kids was in the eyes of the anime community, often justifiably so, they were at least responsible for allowing Dan and others like him to make a living.

    • J_Joestar

Mewtwo: “Not so fast Genesect! you activated my Trap!”

  • I don’t get it. Are we to keep in track of the continuity or is Best Wishes unconnected to the rest of the series?

    • AuraGuyChris

Unconnected to a certain extent. However, there’s really not much to keep track of.
Just keep in mind that Ash does acknowledge seeing Mewtwo before.

    • Pedro Tavares

Don’t get what? who told you BW wasn’t a continuation of the anime?

Its the same Satoshi, the same Pikachu and the same Mewtwo yes.

  • Just Tim

    UBER FIGHT!!!!

    I hope you’re packing some Fire-type attack, Mewtwo. >_<;

    *GENESECT used X-Scissor*

    • Renaldi Saputra

remember that pokemon types don’t do much in the series nor movies..
for example: in the series, golem can be hurt by thundershock, fire attack can beat water type by just 1 hit..

      • J_Joestar

They are getting better with it in the newer seasons though. “Aim for the Horn!” and “Thunder Armor” aren’t really viable anime tactics anymore.

        • Renaldi Saputra

hmmm idk, didn’t watch anymore since advance gen

  • My mind is kind of blown that this even exists.

  • Raltrios

I need an explanation here… I mean, it’s great to see the big M after Mewtwo Returns, but in this trailer he kinda comes out of nowhere. I swear, if they leave us hanging on what he’s been up to since Returns, I’m going to be less than pleased.

    • LynxAmali

Because this is just a trailer?
It’ll probably be explained in the movie.

      • Raltrios

Well, duh. I’m not asking for something right now, I was just saying that if, in the movie, he shows up for no apparent reason, I’ll be annoyed.

    • Renaldi Saputra

I expected the same, but as Lynx said, it might be true
      or even not..

  • Linhua

… lol.. MewTwo and his Anti-Aging Cream. I was kind of half-expecting a slightly altered look.

    • Renaldi Saputra

what kind of cream did he use? Olay??

    • Anime10121

Well considering Ash (a human) has been 10 for the last 15 or so years, Mewtwo (a Pokemon) looking the same isnt that surprising :P

      • Linhua

… I totally forgot about Ash Ketchum. He DOES still look the same.

… I guess I never noticed Ash remaining 10 since he’s been with us since Pokemon’s debut. Whereas, MewTwo vanishes for like… I dunno HOW many Regions… and upon his return, I just thought y’know maybe… he’d have some CHEST HAIR OR SOMETHING growing on him.

… must have been in a tube all this time or somethin’..

  • isotrex

    Damn! I’m getting old.

  • JordyZ

Exactly how many films of the Pokemon movies are there now? I’ve haven’t watch or seen the movies lately.. including the series too.

  • Shadowman

It’s always good to see a familiar face from my childhood past.

  • I just emailed Mike Pollock and Dan Green did NOT retire. He’s just playing “hard to get”, he imagines that Dan’s kids are understandably taking up some but not all of his time. I’m all for Dan retiring, give Dan’s kids the daddy they need. :'(

  • Wow it’s Mewtwo! Where’s the cape?

  • oldmanjenkins44

Pokemon X and Y being about DNA.
Mewtwo, a pokemon that was cloned using DNA in the next movie.
    Coincidence? I think not.

  • Hinataharem

Mewtwo is my least favorite Pokemon

    Said no one ever

    • My eyes widened for a moment, until the latter statement.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Mewtwo must be really bored to travel to another region just to save some kid

  • YoshEE

Is it the same mewtwo? If so, I can’t wait to watch it even if it is in jap version.

  • Nick Sniezek

A Pikachu minimovie with the Eevees and Mewtwo will be a big part in this new movie? SOLD!!

  • I’ve always loved Mewtwo, but my favorite part of the trailer was the Eevee family at the end lol =P

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

So do you think will Sylveon be in the movie?

      • Hopefully, but it looks like it might be a short though either before or after the main movie.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yep. It says Sylveon shows up in a short at the end of the article. I haven’t watched a Pokemon movie in a bit but, unless they’ve changed, the shorts come on before the main movie.

  • yorudox

was that cat at the end a new form of evee?

  • IshimaruKaito

am i the only one who had a NERDGASM when they saw mewtwo??

  • Jesse Torres

    Dang, mewtwo is so fast.

    • Renaldi Saputra

still fast like the previous movies

    • J_Joestar

It is like Mewtwo just went “ZA WARUDO!” on Genesect.

  • Eric Harris

Well maybe when this comes to America I will have a chance to get a legit mewtwo, and genesect.

  • kuroneko0509

    Mewtwo… YES!!!!!

  • LaserVision

This isn’t as random as it seems. Mewtwo and Genesect essentially have similar origins if you look at their Pokemon entries. The difference being one them helped contribute to Pokemon being a multimillion dollar empire, while the other has a color changing gun in its back. And can change into a flying skateboard. Which I guess is cool.

    • Renaldi Saputra

meanwhile mewtwo is a cloned one, genesect is a reinforced + cloned one

  • Suicunesol

Is it just me, or does Mewtwo look different from how he looked in the previous films? In the previous films, he looked much taller and more imposing. In this trailer, he looks shorter and younger (bigger eyes) like the Mewtwo from the games. Maybe it’s the change in art style rubbing off on him.

    • Shariest

Or the awakening is some kind of a rebirth… And as a human product he might have aging process? (I have last seen that movie 10 years ago :/)

      • Renaldi Saputra

        seems it doesn’t make sense..
they maybe don’t care about what mewtwo looked like in the past and what changes him now or etc, they just wanna bring back Mewtwo.. that’s all

        • Shariest

-yes, that’s most likely the answer… After all, while Ash doesn’t age, style changes… And the voice actors also ;)

  • Sensei21

Well actually Ash is supposed to be about 15-17 years old at this point. If you go through the series you’ll hear multiple references to birthdays and holidays. It’s possible that Pokemon, the series, is set many years down the road which would explain a lot of thing. Slower aging, better health, lack of present species that now seem to be hybrids (Pokemon) that have insane Godlike powers. The Pokedex being so fucking all knowing, Pokeballs, and every other bit of technology point to this series as having started about 30-50 years from present time. Being placed in a new map would indicate that it’s actually farther away, after a sort of nuclear war that disfigured the planet, leaving us to regain our power through fragmented technology with a renewed interest in preservation. This would explain why they still use fishing rods, bikes, cars, and many other forms of current technology right alongside things like the flying fortress in Pokemon 2000 or the mundane technology we see in every episode.

In short, Ash may be much older than he looks. It’s possible that a side of effect of aging slower is that we mature as equally slower until our body matures to the real time age of about 20-25 once our brains have fully developed and can actually function at a much higher state, meaning that once Ash hits what we call 20 years old, he will be at our level of maturity yet then can grow mentally much faster while his body still ages slower.
Plus this sort of ability might be ingrained at birth either genetically or scientifically, This might explain the total lack of real parenting done by his mother who just let a 10 year old leave home to go capture these aforementioned Godlike creatures.

It’s also possible still that whatever phenomenon occurred to young Ash in his first encounter with Mewtwo is what actually triggered this slower aging process. His turning to some sort of stone then being restored by the tears of all known Pokemon and their genetically altered clones may have mutated him into something much more special than we realize, the first example of a higher level of humanoid existence.

All in all, this poorly strung along show may yet be the most intelligent form of fiction hidden behind a fluffy yellow mouse that can shoot electricity from it’s body at will.

    • J_Joestar

Black&White/Best Wishes anime states that he is still 10 at the start of the series.

      • Sensei21

That’s impossible. 6 Episodes in the first season and it’s already been three months. That’s an error, or some odd plot point they haven’t explained.

        • Göran Isacson

It is an odd plot point.

The plot point that time moves when the anime writers says it moves, and it moves back and forwards at their command :)

          • Sensei21

Clearly just milking the fans for money. It’s really atrocious what they’ve done with the series. If they had let it mature and grow with it’s fanbase it could have really turned into something great.

        • J_Joestar

not saying it makes sense, just that it is what the anime itself stated at the start of the season.

  • shuyai

i wonder is Mewtwo is the most powerful Pokemon ever. can he beat the shit out of all other pokemon?even legendary one

    • Renaldi Saputra

honestly, mewtwo has been too overrated as becoming the strongest pokemon.. idk why, it’s just in the movies that told about him, and mewtwo is the main protagonist and the only one who has story in his movies.. so main protagonist = strong is a reasonable thing..

      • shuyai

thats the problem with pokemon, every legendary Pokemon was said to be the strongest. so spear and shield paradox become prominent.

i think one of the reason mewtwo is said to be strongest is became he is the only(?) psyche lengendary pokemon, so logically he can beat all normal type pokemon

        • Renaldi Saputra

          the only psychic-type legendary?
well, there’re a lot of.. but mostly have second type like celebi, victini, latios latias, etc..
the one who only have psychic type are: cresselia, deoxys, and jiraichi..

        • J_Joestar

Being a Psychic type hasn’t exactly been a great thing since the start of Gen 2. Mewtwo gets by thanks to his monstrous stats more than just his typing.
He is still one of the top Legendarys in the game, and in the anime/movies is only probably beaten out by Arceus and his Creation Trio, and probably on par with Kyurem (who can transform while alone) and maybe Deoxys (who can also transform at any time on his own IIRC).

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

That Pikachu side story is going to be my favorite lol.^_^

    • Zenthos

Im not the only one! Alright! :D *High fives*

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Mewtwo: Hey Ash I’m sorry for what happen last time, at lest you can live forever as an 10 year old :]

    • Renaldi Saputra

and you can still losing to the champion and continuing adventure on the new region

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        lol everytime

  • Renaldi Saputra

    wow, heroes come back..
it’s pretty amazing to see Mewtwo again.. the only pokemon with clear characterization in the series..
btw seriously, they should get rid of Satoshi/Ash & co. bcos they usually become pawns and not important in the movies..
oh and how can mewtwo greet back Satoshi/Ash if he’s still on the way to become a poke-master after regions?? mewtwo will certainly say: “oh hey dude, haven’t become a pokemon master?? you sucks LOL”

oh and I think the side story is unnecessary..

  • natchu96

Since when was Genesect also a living hoverboard?

Was wondering about the weird joints.

  • Anime10121

Welp, looks like the first Pokemon movie I’ll be watching (well at least watching and paying complete attention to) since Pokemon the movie 2000: the Power of One :D

Go Gen 1 ultimate Pokemon :P

  • hawk222

What if… Mewtwo evolves in this movie? I mean, it is subtitled “Mewtwo’s Awakening,” after all. It would be a great way to debut a new Pokemon, too, just like the mini movie is debuting Sylveon.

    • I don’t know if that’s going to be the case. The line at the end says: “You don’t know the real ‘Mewtwo’ yet.” And they put Mewtwo in quotes as well, so I don’t know if that’s supposed to imply something or not. The general vibe seems to be some kind of awakening of his power, not necessarily evolution.

      • hawk222

I see. I was just hypothesizing. Still, it’d be a pretty cool idea, don’t you think?

  • People are obvious missing the fact that the Pokemon world is not in our world so a month to them could be a day to us and a year for them could be a month for us. It is like how in Adventure time Fionna is 14 yet bubblegum is 19 and likes her. The whole legal age argument is invalid since it is not our laws

    • Renaldi Saputra

yea and it proves that pokemon anime doesn’t make sense comparing to real-life related things

  • Rina Dawg

Anyone notice that the building in the trailer looks strangely similar to that green vine building on X and Y?
    Mewtwo? Okay.

  • Thatguy

OMG….I just realized…10 year old’s who watch this show won’t know who Mewtwo is!!!! HOLY FLUB NUTS….At least he’d back. Finally.

  • Vash bane

why is everone talking about ash?
lets get on the pikachu that should be lv100 by now XD

  • “It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are!” yayaya True Legend is coming back..!!
