Nintendo Bundling Super Mario AR Photo Cards With eShop Prepaid Cards

By Spencer . March 31, 2013 . 11:02pm

imageNintendo wants to sell more downloadable 3DS games and has a plan to sell more prepaid cards. Well, at least in Japan. Prepaid point cards also include an AR card for Photo Together with Super Mario. This downloadable 3DS app lets players take photos with Mario and other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom.

The 1,000 yen card has the Goomba AR card, the 2,000 yen card has Super Mario, and the 3,000 yen card has Princess Peach. The prepaid card and Photo Together with Super Mario AR card packs come out on April 23 in Japan.

You can put AR cards together and characters will interact with each other. For example, Mario will stomp on the Goomba.

Cards for a Koopa Troopa (1,000 yen), Luigi (2,000 yen), and Bowser (3,000 yen) will be released at a later date.

Sorry, i’ve been wanting to do that for awhile.
    On topic: That’s pretty sweet.

Oh man, when I got my 3DS back when it first came out, the first thing I fiddled around with was the AR function. I thought the Nintendo characters were cool but desperately wanted a Princess Peach card. I will definitely import one if they don’t make it stateside. Does anyone know if they would be region locked?

    • Detrimont

you wouldnt be able to get the money off the card onto your 3ds, and the app will only be on the japanese eshop, so yes, technically regionlocked

    • Namuro

The cards shouldn’t be region locked, as far as I know. I’ve tried scanning Kid Icarus cards from websites on the internet before to test if it would work; I’ve tried with all the Japanese, European and American cards, which worked just fine.

As a side note, I wish they would make more character AR cards, and not just from the Nintendo side, AR cards from games like RE:R, MGS or DOA would be nice.

      • Sergio BriceƱo

Yes. DoA would be definitely nice.

Edit: TecmoKoei make the girls interact with each other!

I think it’s a rather smart and cute way to sell prepaid cards! If NOA decides to sell prepaid cards like these I will buy them in a heartbeat.

    • Aoshi00

I always like to collect prepaid cards w/ special art on it, like the Zelda Wii point (or DS?) before.. I got some special MS point cards from BB too, like Gears, Halo, etc.. after you use the codes you still have a nice card..

I hope these would come out in the US too.. I usually just use my credit card to add money to my Jpn e-shop acct, usually at least 1000 yen to buy anything, and the credit card charges me a little foreign transaction fee too (since they don’t take Discover).. at least the $-yen exchange rate is pretty great now, hovering around 90-some yen = $1..

  • Scott

    Instant want.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Wow What A great Idea!! ^_^ so want

  • ShugoTakahashi

As someone who owns a Japanese 3DS, this sounds neat and I might look into it.

Though as someone who enjoys the ability to deposit US credit card funds directly into the Japanese eShop without having to deal with expensive import points cards (like I have to on PSN), this also makes me ANGRY! Why do you keep taking my money!? NINTENDOOOOO!

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, same here, it’s so nice they let you add money to the Jpn 3DS e-shop w/ a credit card, convenient and cheap.. would be even nicer if they take Discover since they don’t charge foreign transaction fee.. well, the exchange rate is not so bad now, so I might import these, always stuffs to buy from the Jpn e-shop :) I hear ya, importing Jpn PSN cards were too expensive, I hardly even want to spend the yen value on it..

  • Zonic505

Wow, surprised they remembered the AR feature on the 3DS since Kid Icarus: Uprising. In any case, this is a rather clever idea, & I wouldn’t mind if this came to the US. It doubles as a collector’s items, which means more people are likely to buy it.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

THat Goomba is sooooo cute.^_^ Oh boy, imagine Nintendo doing this with Eevee, i am going to go crazy on collecting them lol.^_^

  • The-Beast

Now they just need to update the eShop to make games locked to an account instead of the console.

  • Tails the Foxhound

Year of Luigi huh? Sure, Nintendo, sure.

  • Ben Sylvia

Can we get Zelda and Metroid ones too?
    Maybe a Polterpup?
