Shin Megami Tensei IV Looks Like A July Release In North America

By Ishaan . April 2, 2013 . 1:30pm

Shin Megami Tensei IV is headed to North America this Summer, but Summer lasts for several months, which could put it anywhere between May and September. However, retailers have a more specific release window listed—July.

GameStop, Amazon, EB Games and VGP list July 16th as the release date for Shin Megami Tensei IV. Atlus have also share the game’s box art, which you can see to the right.

Preordering this as soon as possible and nothing else I can think of is coming out in July so this is great choice

    • I believe retailers also got Rune Factory 4 listed for July 16.

  • Ethan_Twain

Whoah that is soon! I figured this to be August at the earliest. This is almost Nintendo like, announcing that a game is coming mere months before it releases without anyone having gotten a leak out prior. Most publishers can’t (or at least don’t) keep a secret like this all the way up to three and a half months before release.

I wonder why this game is getting such a fast tracked localization? This is well ahead of the schedule one would expect from an Atlus 3DS JRPG considering the delay between releases both for Etrian Odyssey IV and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summon: Soul Hackers

    • MrTyrant

Maybe because is highly anticipated for fans. One is an Atlus title (any smt is) the other because is SMT IV, the main franchine. That’s why is a good signal for me. I’d bet that Devil Survivor 2 Break Code or possibly Persona 5 will have a fast release too.

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Or Atlus is just pulling a massive, internet encompassing April Fool’s Day prank!
Please don’t be though. I would hate you, Atlus, and you just became my favorite 3rd party developer too D:

        • Shane Guidaboni

          It’s April 2nd. I think you’re safe.

  • Shane Guidaboni

It’s going to be a fantastic Summer thanks to Atlus and Nintendo.

  • MrTyrant
    • Surgeon of Death

My god! Give me 10 copies.

  • Tooru

I’m so happy this is coming out here so quickly! Here’s hoping that Devil Survivor 2: Break Record follows this fall. It seems that the 3DS truly has become Megaten’s new home.

    • benhofb

Soul Hackers, BOTH Devil Survivors and a flagship SMT title! It is fantastic. It really seems like Ninty and Atlus have a big deal here with the 3DS and WiiU (SMTxFE). Not that I’m complaining or anything…

      • Shane Guidaboni

SMT returns to its original home.

    • LightZero

I’m still a bit bitter about buying the vanilla version of Devil Survivor 2 but I agree. Hopefully there will be new Devil Summoner that will be announce for the 3DS next. Then after a Devil Survivor 3.

  • Junko Enoshima

I’m pretty sure the date is a placeholder. Rune Factory 4 is also listed with that date…It might not, so I’m not exactly sure. But it seems likely.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Rune Factory is releasing in July though – the 16th in fact.

      • Elemiel

That’s still a placeholder date, though RF4 is supposed to be in the summer. Isn’t Xillia supposed to come out in the summer as well? Oh my grah, there’s too many things I want coming out in the summer! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  • Dyne

call me in a year for the EU date

    • TheRealMalek

      A year ?

Maybe two if we have any chance…

  • So….anything for Europe?

    • TheRealMalek

      a rope…

    • benhofb

Nope.. Not yet. But I’d expect Ghostlight to say something soon.

      • SirRichard

You’re being pretty hopeful, if they do manage to get their hands on it it won’t be for months going by the track record for Atlus games.

      • Jisgsaw

While I like Ghostlight, I hope some bigger publisher will take it, in order to have a release this year, or in the begining of next year.

  • Tincho Kudos

So soon, so great. I really hope this is not related to april’s fools

  • benhofb

ERMAHGERD, PLEASE! That would seriously be the perfect birthday present for me. <3

  • Now all we need is Devil Survivor 2 3D

  • $36598391

a bit suprised though, all of the other numbed main Shin Megami Tensei games were on consoles first, I wonder why IV isn’t for the PS3, Nocturne(III) was on PS2

    • Jisgsaw

Because the number SMT games don’t sell that well, and considering the very high developpement costs for HD consoles…

    • DesmaX

I don’t think you could make a proper SMT game with the portables available at the time

    • LightZero

Because handhelds are incredibly popular in Japan unlike the PS3. The Japanese also on the move a lot and they are rarely at home playing on their consoles. Handheld weren’t as popular back during the Snes and PS2 days. Not to mention the main titles doesn’t sell that well to justified being on a HD system.

If you are one of those pro console fans you best to forget jrpgs being dominate on 8th gen consoles. The 3DS is well on its way of being the new PS2 in that regard.

    • 1st person battles are better in handled and weird in home consoles, not bad, but i kind of feel 1st person battles are so handled lately

  • $29082171

Isn’t it possible for this game’s EU publisher be someone other than Ghostlight?

How about whoever is publishing EO4 in Europe right now?

    • Jisgsaw

      NIS America I think.

Would maybe be not too bad, considering they also brought P4:G in three month this year (fastest release ever of a SMT game, tied with P4’s release by (I think) Square Enix).

      • $29082171

I know NIS published in Australia but nothing was said about Europe I believe, I think it was Nintendo since they were the ones who announced the EU release, maybe?

        • Jisgsaw

          I honestly don’t know, I don’t follow EO.

I just thought I saw it was NIS somewhere, it may be wrong.

But NIS on SMT4 wouldn’t be a bad thing.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

It’s……..glorious!! Can’t wait to set it by Nocturne.

  • Prinnydoom

*Claps for america* Now give us our release date -__-

  • As soon as it become available for pre-order, it will be mine *_*

  • Day one buy!

  • Nitraion

Hope after this they back to console game….

    • They already are. It’s called Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem.

      • Nitraion

Lol but its wiiU right? Atlus seems go to Nintendo lately…

        • Wii U isn’t a console by your definition?

          • Nitraion

Its console alright.. but judging from the game name i bet its WiiU only… unless they multi platform it i can try it..

          • Ah, so what you’re really doing is port begging. Nice that you finally came out and said it. :P

          • Nitraion

            =_= eh? wait? what? -_-
            huh maybe you right…

          • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Fire Emblem is a Nintendo IP. No way in Hades its going anywhere beyond a Nintendo system.

      • Jisgsaw

I would also expect P5 to be on PS3 (or PS3 and 360).

        • Yeah, I don’t think PS3/360 for Persona 5 was ever in doubt.

          • DesmaX

It would be cool if Atlus releases it on the Wii U too

          • The more the better, but going multiplat across two HD consoles is a hard enough task.

          • DesmaX

Well, yeah. But Atlus seems really friendly with Nintendo, so I’ll assume it could be done.

I mean, it would be cool to have the game on the screen, and have the map on the controller. It would make dungeon crawling better (Not having to pause the game all the time)

          • Suicunesol

Only because Atlus has found success on Nintendo’s handhelds. It’s not about being friends (even though they might be). It’s about profit, so I don’t think Atlas would invest in the Wii U just yet.

  • Eric Harris

Super excited. In some way, now I’m not as excited about Soul Hackers because I just have this game on my mind.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Between this and Project X Zone, my summer portable gaming is well taken care of.

  • I wonder if they’re going to localize that Super Robot Wars game for the PS3 anytime soon.

  • Ooh so quick! What a fantastic summer.

  • Darkyhalf

Already preordered, time to start crossing days off my calendar.

  • IshimaruKaito

    • And Rune Factory 4 too~!

      • That is one game i wont doubt to get, im getting the 3DS just for it, hope XSEED can shred some light about it soon

  • Preordering like the Fist of Zeus

  • LonelyGuardian

This is amazing! What about the SMT IV 3ds xl?

  • Ty Austin

Finally, the 3DS gets the love it deserves! If Bravely Default gets localized, my happiness will be complete.

It’s a shame the main series is on a handheld, but if it’s this or nothing, I’ll happily take it. I’m a little bothered by the first person battles, but not why you’d think. I actually love it in SMT games, but seeing 3 do away with it, then have them in 4 just seems like a huge step backwards.

  • Adam Zaorski

Fingers crossed for eshop release, tons of people here in EU that got a us 3ds will buy it day 1 from eshop to cut the tax and custom payments.

    • At least the email from Atlus states that it will be on the Eshop. So I believe you’re good there!

  • Space_Ghost

I guess I can put up with FP battles and try this game out ;) It looks awesome! I can’t believe I’ve never played a SMT game and I’ve been around for as long, if not longer, than they have. Devil Survivor looks great, but just isn’t my style. I’m really excited to play SMT IV.

  • Firekitty

So, what are the chances this will be dual audio? I know it’s Atlus, but they did do it for Persona, and we’ve had a couple of dual or Japanese-only audio 3DS releases lately…The fact that it’s not region free is just about the only thing standing between me and a 3DS right now, but if keeping the original voices becomes a theme that won’t be as much of an obstacle for me.

  • ndjn3979

Damn, feeling tempted to try Nintendo again. My last console was the N64.

Persona 3 and Nocturne got me hooked to SMT, and now with Fire Emblem looking mighty interesting, with SMT4 to follow, I gotta save up for a 3DS XL…

  • Rein

The 3DS library is getting better and better.
