Last year, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono revealed Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a live-action direct-to-web Street Fighter series that will explore the origins of Ken and Ryu. Production is being led by Joey Ansah, who worked on the Street Fighter: Legacy web film, and while it isn’t an official Capcom project, Assassin’s Fist has Capcom’s blessing and the necessary contracts in place.
Today, the team behind the series launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the show. They’re asking for £625,000. Ansah, who is serving as both director and writer, explains:
Last year, our brilliant Producer, Jacqueline Quella successfully purchased the option from Capcom, along with their blessing, to produce ‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’.
It was always my intention to raise finance for this modest budget series via independent investment. Asking you, the fans, for money was never my initial intention. But in this tough economic recession, and in the limited time since acquiring the option, we have managed to secure some, but not all of our production budget.
Ansah goes on to mention that the production team has received “other offers of significant finance” from the movie industry, but that they come with strings attached and would threaten to compromise his creative vision for Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Should the team not manage to secure the remaining finances required to fund the project, they risk losing what funds they already have and production would be delayed into next year.
On the flip side, if they are successful, following Assassin’s Fist, there’s a script for a Street Fighter production titled The World Warrior, which will be adapted into a series and a movie in the future.
