<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week was slow on new releases, so the only new game in the top-20 was Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge… which sold 9,659 copies at launch.

Topping the charts again was Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which appears to be developing quite the long tail. The game has proven to be a very strong seller and pushed another 70,000 copies last week. Behind it at #2 was Animal Crossing: New Leaf, with another 50,000 copies sold.

Namco Bandai’s games are doing well, too. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 has moved close to 360,000 copies on the PlayStation 3 and an additional 85,000 on the Vita.

Meanwhile, despite a relatively slow start, Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission continues to sell week after week, and has reached 152,000 copies sold. This is likely due to its release being timed with the new Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods animated movie, and it isn’t Namco’s first 3DS game to show strong sales over a long period of time. Readers may recall Run for Money Tousouchuu and Taiko Drum Master: The Little Dragon and the Mysterious Orb doing very well, too.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Ouch on those Ninja Gaiden numbers…

    • Kevadu

You can only re-release a game that was critically eviscerated so many times…

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

It’s the same rerelease, just ported to consoles with bigger player bases who wanted it more.

  • Jibun Rest@rt

You have Animal Crossing listed as being for the PSP on your chart.

  • Ethan_Twain

I wish it was possible to delete snarky comments you regret an hour later. For now, I’ll just replace it with this.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

      I don’t mind! I know you meant it as a joke. :P

    Animal Crossing for PSP?

  • Scarletmoonwish

Damn it looks like I have to by a PSP if I want to play the new Animal Crossing.

  • KuchikiSentou

I hope Toukiden etc will chart consistently.

    • Kyle Silva

Nope. Japan really loves Animal Crossing
You’d be surprised just how much Animal Crossing merchandise is there.
A recent poll also showed that Japanese women’s favorite Nintendo franchise is not Mario or Pokèmon, but Animal Crossing, and it was released BEFORE New Leaf.

      • KuchikiSentou

It was listed as a PSP game

  • Sentsuizan_93

Woah… I didn’t think that CCC would drop from 2 to 9. And by 7 units between that and Muramasa Rebirth….
    Also, those sales for Razor’s Edge…. ouch….

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

    Animal Crossing error fixed!

  • d19xx

Sad to see Ninja Gaiden in this state. But it’s nice to see Muramasa hanging on.

  • 果林

but i actually enjoyed ninja gaiden o.o

Layton just barely at 200k. Poor L5… I wonder if they even know what to do with it at this point. On the bright side, Fantasy Life has the potential to be a killer hit for them in the future. They have that huge content update for the current game coming this year, too. Too bad we’ll never receive sales figures for it. :(

Also, seeing all of these older games jump back into the top-20 during a slow week reminds me how exciting this holiday season is going to be. We’re going to have an absolutely terrifying number of hit games, and the vast majority of them are going to be concentrated on a single platform.

    • Ethan_Twain

It’s too early to know about the holiday season isn’t it? I sure don’t know about this holiday season. There’s going to be Lightning Return’s that’ll probably do pretty well, and there’ll be Pokemon that’ll do awesome. But I can’t think of much else from the Japanese side that I know is coming out at year’s end. Ace Attorney 5 I guess? What all was on your mind?

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I expect Pokémon, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Tomodachi Collection, NSMB2 and Youkai Watch (provided it succeeds) will do well this holiday.

It’s kind of funny… people have sort of started to take it for granted that we’re going to see both a new Pokémon and Monster Hunter released within a couple months of each other on the same platform for the very first time. We all think of it, and it’s kind of like, “Yeah, that’ll be big, probably.” I don’t think anyone sees the explosion that’s going to happen. The people that are new to sales, especially, are in for a treat. This isn’t the kind of event you get to see often. :P

Ace Attorney 5 I think will do well enough, but it isn’t really the type of game that would receive a major boost from the holidays.

        …Lightning Returns. I don’t know, man. I honestly don’t know. ><

    • Kyle Silva

I really want to know what Level 5 is going to do without Layton series. The series won’t feel the same without Hershel. And it would be cool seeing him after Unwound Future.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I would love to see them just start over with Layton in a new genre, like maybe an adventure game without the segmented puzzle bits. Find a way to integrate them into the story. That won’t bring back their casual audience, but those folks are lost for good anyway, since the “Brain Age market” is dead.

Now is the time to work toward re-strengthening Layton as a character-driven franchise. I’d like to see them give him a new partner, the way Nick gets new assistants in Ace Attorney. Luke’s out of the picture, so they have room to do a new character.

        • Kyle Silva

He does have Flora. And we never got to know too much about her.

        • Helepythia

Uhhh….when you mean “Luke’s out of the picture,” what do you mean exactly?

          • s07195

Probably spoilers he decided not to mention. I haven’t played the game myself, so…

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m so looking forward to watching Pokemon demolish the charts. Once that hits, it’s pretty much game over for any other game releasing this year — other than Monster Hunter.

It’s looking like we’re gonna get a fall 2011 repeat where the 3DS occupied the top 3 spots into the following year. This is going to be the year that the 3DS explodes, Pokemon guaranteeing that at least some of that explosion is international.

Past that, I’m looking forward to seeing the PS4′s debut. As of right now, Japanese software is a really big question mark. If Squenix’s FF announcement at E3 includes a release for this year though, that could be an early hit. I think the only way that’s gonna work out is if Versus really is XV though. It’s already a sufficiently anticipated title, so re-announcing it as XV could do wonders for them — and the PS4.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I’m actually interested in a bunch of things this year:

        1. Has the market for hunting action games shrunk since Monster Hunter Portable 3rd? There have been a number of clones since then, but none of them really give us any indication of whether the market is still there or not, since Monster Hunter kind of is the market. None of the other games come close in sales. So, I’m curious to see where MH4′s launch sales land compared to P3rd’s.

        2. How Pokémon and Monster Hunter affect each other. Will they help each other out, since they’re now both on the same console, or will they cut into each other’s sales? That should be very interesting.

        3. How 3DS will do compared to its first two holiday seasons.

        4. PS4/Wii U sales. I expect Wii U will pick up since Nintendo will bring out the heavy-hitters, but we have no clue what PS4 will have at launch for Japan. Having an FF game close to launch would be smart, but I wonder if they’ll have it ready in time… Either way, it should be really interesting to see how the two systems do once they’ve both gotten off the ground.

        5. Lightning Returns! Not… sure what to think? There’s a faction of people that thought XIII-2 sold badly because Lightning wasn’t the lead character. I guess this game will show us if that actually plays a significant role or not. Also, LR coming this year makes me think we probably aren’t going to see Versus or the PS4 game any time soon. They wouldn’t want to cut into LR sales.

        • Solomon_Kano

I’ll be honest — I forgot Lightning Returns was even happening haha. Yea, that eliminates Versus/XV/whatever from hitting this year.

I’m not sure you’ll have your question answered though. Some believe that Light not being the focus of XIII-2 led to its diminished sales but… well, will Lightning’s return (lol) be a significant draw even with the game’s new combat system? If her absence really did something, will those people return with her even if the gameplay’s significantly different? Should be interesting, though I personally expect it to move less than XIII-2.

The thing about the Wii U’s fall… well, that’s as much of a question mark to me as the PS4′s launch. Nintendo’s mentioned a looot of stuff for Wii U… but their inability to confirm it for this year doesn’t have me confident that most of it will actually be for this year.

I’m sure they’ve got some surprises for this year to announce at E3, but I can’t see them announcing something huge within the next few months that would actually see release this year. If they bring up those Wii U games from the Nintendo Direct a while back… well, what of those would really give the Wii U a shot in the arm? Yarn Yoshi? Monolith’s new game? The only title definitely hitting this year is a remake and with the way sales of Zelda games go, I’m not sure that’s going to do much. E3 should provide some clarity though.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Not looking so good for NG. I wonder how it faired overseas. I didn’t buy the game simply because I felt ripped off of vanilla NG3, I can’t seem to prioritize TN games to other coming out soon (especially since Totori Plus came out like a week before it).
Well, here’s hoping they either give it a rest or decide to do some major changes/added features to the series next installment.

    • FetusZero

Anyway Tecmo has no one to blame but themselves for the really low sales of their games this year. How did we learn the game was coming out? The same way we did for Totori Plus.. we saw it pop on the store out of nowhere. Not a really good way to get people interested.. even indie devs who can hardly eat manage to push their titles better than this.

  • http://mmv-wii.proboards.com/index.cgi Hero of Legend

Dragon Ball actually outsold MANY DB games in its first week. I wouldn’t called 88k a relatively slow start. :P

Take a gander at Garaph’s page for the franchise:

    http://garaph.info/softwaregroup.php?grid=9

All are Famitsu numbers, and DB 3DS is actually past 153k in Famitsu. It’s unbelievable, hopefully BN sees this and puts lots more on 3DS.

    Shin Budokai 3 please? :(,

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      Dragon ball rpg?^_^

  • Andrew H.

Sad to see NG doing this bad.
Well imo Hack & Slash games are getting stale and NG is focused to mainly male customers. For most of the hack/slash games I bought. 1 play through and that was it. Nothing else to do besides the attempt at harder difficulties.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

      “Focused mainly on male customers”

You should see the Warriors games, or Sengoku Basara for an example that works harder to please female fans. Girls are way more likely to eat that shit up just because of the character designs. The fact that game is rather simple also helps, as well as increasing number of playable female characters.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    Go Fate/Extra CCC! =^_^=

  • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

I’m a bit sad that Vita sales have dipped below 20,000, but on the other hand, everything seems to be a bit down altogether. Software sales seem kinda low too– a definite slow week.

I hope the Wii U does much better soon enough.

    • Brandon Fothergill

Famitsu reported that it’s actually because of a low shipment rate. A lot of stores are turning up out of Stock on Vita. Even Amazon inflated the price to match the demand

  • Masa

wow, those sales for Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge are terrible.
Not surprised though, as a fan of the series even i’m not going to buy this game again just for a few females characters etc.

They should have just added all this extra stuff as a download expansion.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Well the system actually got revamped to play more like previous games so it was still more than a regular content update. Also recall that these are sales from Japan, which has more incentive to buy a Wii U, and cares more for its portables than it’s console games.

  • Follower_of_Pram

Grats to Luigi for his main character game to be such a success.

  • Shuga Suenaga

Animal Crossing is on fire :0

  • kangms872

    Lol hayashi!!

  • Solomon_Kano

Yaaay, Luigi! I can’t wait to see how the next Mario & Luigi does later this year.

    Go Luigi!
