<< Last week’s software sales chart

This year’s Golden Week holiday was rather unimpressive in Japan, with the Nintendo 3DS being the only videogame console to benefit from the week-long holiday in terms of sales. Last week, which was the week following Golden Week, was even worse.

Typically, sales across the board—including both hardware and software—drop the week after a major holiday like Golden Week. While the 3DS managed to sell another 50,000 units for the week, the Wii U dropped to an alarmingly low 8,000 units. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Vita dropped back down to 12,000 units, marking the end of the short-lived boost it enjoyed as a result of its recent price cut and software releases.

Namco Bandai and Nintendo were, once again, the top publishers for the week, filling up the majority of the top-20 software sales chart.

Thankfully, the Summer ahead looks to be more exciting. May 23rd will see the release of Shin Megami Tensei IV and Kamen Rader: Battride War, which should make for some interesting discussion in the weeks following their release. Soon after, we’ll see Square Enix’s mecha 3DS RPG, Gyrozetter, followed by Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and Youkai Watch in July.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Well… To that last guy who made the joke about Eagles.

If it’s like in Lords of the Ring… They didn’t fly the eagle because the fucking Eye of Sauron and his army would’ve spotted the Eagle and then proceeded to kill said Eagles in mid-flight because within the army of Sauron there are these things called Nazgul. Worse yet they can take to the air. Winged Nazgul if you will.

Capable, apt, and more then ready to kill anyone dumb enough to try and just fly there.

Never did understand why people think this is a plot hole… Honestly folks. Just simple thinking of why and it’s freakishly obvious to anyone with a quarter of a functional brain.

Wow Wii U was hitting its stride and now this :( I really want to see next next gen consoles succeed, but Wii U is really making a good case that perhaps we don’t need a new gen. PS4 ought to, for the sake of the entire video game industry, do so much better to renew our confidence in these new prospects and frontiers in the future of the hybridization of technology with compelling new fun ideas in videogames with a focus on the great immersion with excellent innovation and what not, and potentially, also inspire and reinvigorate folks excitement surrounding Wii U this holiday season and beyond for JPN. Maybe they could consult with Iwatar and receive tips on how to make sure their launch avoids the same pitfalls that are plaguing the Wii U’s performance at hand? As well as share exclusives so both systems can perform well and build a healthy competitive environment.

    • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Not going to happen. Ps4 doesnt have much in it to create something that isnt that far removed from whats possible with older technologies. You’re game worlds are only going to be able to be somewhat bigger. Competition is whats needed yes, but working together when they have those attitudes isnt going to happen

    • Brion Valkerion

WiiU has yet to hit a stride imo. But its not surprising sales were low. Its after and during Golden Week. Everyone blows their money on the holiday for travel/taking a break from the normal routine, then usually has no money to buy anything for a few weeks after. Its like this every year.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Stride lol.

Yea, Sony’s not going to consult Nintendo for squat. Especially considering you’re suggesting the Wii U’s currently low sales would be something for Nintendo to draw advice from. Anything Nintendo could say there Sony would know from the PS3′s early years.

Yea, there’s not much coming in these next few months. Much of consequence, anyway. I’m hoping that E3 sees some surprise OMG-that’s-right-around-the-corner announcement that gives it a quick boost, but that’s unlikely. So, yea, I could definitely see it hitting 5k in the coming months.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t think Iwata’s in any position to be giving advice, given how they botched up the Wii U’s launch.

      • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

They made a gamble that didnt pan out. Its a shame. But its for the best, since as they say stressed Nintendo is based Nintendo. Because Atlus.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t know if I agree that things didn’t pan out because they gambled. I think they just weren’t well-prepared enough.

They should have figured that their first batch of HD games would take longer to develop than they expected and either begun work on them sooner, or made better use of outsourcing to speed things up.

That also says nothing about the third-party situation. I get that they’re doing some great collaborations with external developers and I’m excited for those games, but left to their own devices, third-parties aren’t going to develop for Wii U and that’s Nintendo’s fault.

          • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I think you’re slightly over-estimating how much of its Nintendo’s fault. ( After all they did try to find a partner in Phillips with CD tech) And yes they know they put themselves in this situation, but in the end their is only so much they can do to pander to third parties before it inhibits their vision and their raison d’etre as a company. They have a goal and its not just to “make money” What happened with the Wii U was an unexpected issue and they rushed it to the market , because they let the Wii fall of the wagon and had they had they gone ahead and didn’t hold of on their first party titles we’d have a different situation now. But I see things as they are now for the best since they can just go ahead on their second module. They’ve always played their hand in shaping the path they walk in the industry, only Nintendo really knows what they “should” have done. They’re that secretive for a reason. Now I’m not particularly fond of the route Microsoft has taken the industry in but I recognize what they did provide in transforming the gaming ecosystem into the hot mess it is today. Its what spawned the Ps4 anyway. Now after all the bells and whistles quite down people will realize it’s just a socially optimized PS3 with different architecture.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

but in the end their is only so much they can do to pander to third parties before it inhibits their vision and their raison d’etre as a company.

I think it works both ways. Yes, third-parties are wary of Nintendo for a variety of reasons. I also agree that third-parties missed an opportunity with the Wii that would have benefited them and the industry, and that wasn’t Nintendo’s fault.

However, that’s all the more reason that Nintendo should make things more inviting for them if they plan to launch a major new console and are counting on third-party support. If you go back and look at their financial briefings over the past two years, they make very clear statements along the lines of not wanting dry spells on Wii U and actively collaborating with external companies to maintain a steady stream of software. That’s their responsibility and it’s on them to figure out how to fulfil it, one way or another.

          • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Indeed. Their responsibility and they seem to be directly predisposed to owning up to it. Nintendo seems to be more interested in doing what they can to expand the industry and their avenues of access than chasing what those are disinclined to give. You know its always been in the back of my mind but Nintendo seems to draw many parallels with Germany in relation to the rest of Europe. Console wars also show that many people are ripe with nationalistic tendencies .-.

  • Solomon_Kano

Meanwhile, the PlayStation Vita dropped back down to 12,000 units, marking the end of the short-lived boost it enjoyed as a result of its recent price cut and software releases.

As the first week the Vita’s been this low since the price drop 3 months ago, I’d say that’s a statement that should be held until we see if it stays here. That sounds rather final, which this drop may not be. With no software coming soon, it may well be, but it still feels a bit early for that.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I did take future software into account when I wrote this post, but I see what you mean. Let me explain that a little better.

Valhalla Knights 3 is coming soon, but after that, things are dry until a month later when the Neptunia idol game hits in late June. Following that, the next “big” release (I guess?) is Toukiden which is PSP/PSV, followed by Dragon’s Crown, which is PS3/PSV.

At most, these games are going to push the Vita by a few thousand units for a week when they come out, but you may recall there was a point when people thought that the system was going to stabilize somewhere between 25-30k. What I mean is, that phase is now over. We’re going to be sub-25k for a while now, IMO.

I expect God Eater and FFX to be the next games that give Vita a boost over 25k, but neither one has a release date yet.

edit: Actually, let me edit that. 20k might be lowballing. I could see maybe Neptunia pushing it to that much during the week of its release.

      • Kevadu

You’re still ignoring the fact that–by your own admission–it was a slow week for *everything*. Hardware sales were down overall, as much because of the time of year as software releases. Yet you single out the Vita and act like it’s going to stay there, but don’t say the same thing about anything else.

        The bias is pretty obvious…

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Who says nothing else is going to stay there? The Wii U is going to stay more or less where it is until the Fall. Pikmin 3 won’t save it. Neither will Resident Evil: Revelations. Alternatively, in the Vita’s case, Valhalla Knights and Neptunia will make little difference.

Besides, it’s not just this week. Vita has been around 20k or below for the past several weeks now. That isn’t healthy for a new portable console that just received a hefty price cut. If you feel there’s upcoming software that will escalate its weekly sales to a higher figure, you’re welcome to provide examples.

      • Solomon_Kano

Fair enough. Both the Vita and Wii U are lacking things to bring them out of their slumps in the immediate future, so it’s certainly not an outlandish thought. But with the week directly before Golden Week being on par with Golden Week before this drop, I just had to wonder if maybe it wouldn’t move back closer to what it was. Still sub-20k, but a bit closer.

That said, I refuse to even guess at Neptunia’s potential impact after Monster Monpiece and Senran Kagura. The otaku are in full effect on Vita, who knows what havoc combining Neptunia with typical otaku-bait like Idolmaster could wreak lol.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

This is partly why I edited my post, too, hahaha. The otaku market is blooming on Vita, so I’m not sure if that would affect Neptunia PP or not.

          • Solomon_Kano

It’ll certainly be interesting to see.

      • PoweredByHentai

Just wondering, where would the new XBLAZE Code Embryo and SRW OG Saga Masou Kishin 3 go?

They both come out for both the PS3 and the Vita and both are also targeted for a summer release.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Xblaze is a visual novel and a new IP, too, so I wouldn’t expect too much from it right off the bat. If word of mouth is good, I suppose it could see continued sales. ArcSys do seem capable of coming up with characters people care about.

Masou Kishin 3… I really have no idea. So many factors go into the success of Super Robot Wars and related games, including what mechs are included, how popular they are, whether there are any ongoing projects involving those mechs that could boost recognition or awareness etc. etc.

It’s virtually impossible to keep track of it all and predict how they’ll do. The best you could do is look back after a game has been released and try to make sense of why it sold the way it did, but even then, we may not be getting the full story.

          • PoweredByHentai

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that’s a visual novel. >_<

I’m excited about the release of Gyrozetter and Youkai Watch, and I hope both do extremely and that they’ll be localized. I also want to see some gameplay vids of Youkai Watch and get an idea of the differences in playing as FeMC vs MC if there are any (or at least, how they interact with each other, etc).

    • Hinataharem

Wait, when was there a FeMC? I guess I missed it?

      • puchinri

I saw a gameplay vid in which you could actually choose the gender at the start of the game, and the girl with the pink bike is the FeMC. It was a pretty recent vid too, and I’m wondering if it is indeed a full option and what differences it makes in-game, but I haven’t seen anyone report on it really.

        • Hinataharem

Yeah, that’s where my confusion came from, as I haven’t seen a single thing on that anywhere. Where did you see the gameplay vid?

  • babybabybabybaby

To be fair to his comment, you did mention solely 3DS titles as ones to look forward to in the article, disregarding Valhalla Knights 3 which is out next week, Neptunia and Toukiden in June, and Dragon’s Crown in July.

And you did touch on it in another comment, but the way you worded the Vita’s Golden Week drop to 12,000 heavily implies that this would be the norm for the system, whereas *everything* has dropped. Two months isn’t really a short-lived boost either.

I own both systems, and not to sound like a butt, but you do kind of get the feeling that your preferences are bleeding into the article.

Edit: Excuse me, but why have I been banned from further posting? It says I don’t have permission to post anywhere on Siliconera.

Edit 2: No, I don’t have any alts. I’m on my dorm’s internet.

  • ronin4life

I was looking at previous weeks… Vita golden week rise was quite poor. It could be argued that a part of that was it saw a major rise compared to what it WOULD of been at that point were it not for Golden week… which is pretty bad. For example; the original 3ds beat it out, which wasn’t the case pre golden week.

As for the titles, in a sort of half hearted defence those titles weren’t just 3ds centric, but major releases from heavy publishers with solid track records on the system. Toukiden is MP, Neptunia is a spinoff of an already niche game… those will be hard pressed to greatly impact the charts.(don’t know much about VK3, so whatever someone more knowledgeable thinks I’ll probably go along with…)

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

This is a sales column. I listed games that are likelier to sell well and generate sales discussion. Did you miss the mention of Kamen Rider?

Kamen Rider is a known series and is very popular. SMTIV is being heavily promoted after a decade of being AWOL. Youkai Watch is Level 5′s next big franchise. Gyrozetter is coming off of a very heavy merchandising and anime push from Square.

In comparison, Valhalla Knights isn’t expected to sell much at all. Neither is Neptunia’s idol game spin-off, judging by the series’ history. Dragon’s Crown is an anomaly because Vanillaware games have been hit-and-miss for a while now.

Personal tastes don’t matter in the sales column. Things sell what they do. Liking or disliking something isn’t going to change that. 8k is pathetic for the Wii U and 12k is terrible for the Vita. The PS3 sold the same amount as the Vita did this week. For a console in its seventh year, that isn’t too shabby. For the Vita, however, it’s terrible. That’s the reality of the situation and people that like Wii U and/or Vita can’t change that. Neither one is doing well.

Yes, everything dropped. That was the headline of the post. But the point remains that, even during an extremely weak period, certain consoles continue to sell respectable numbers while others do not.
