Sony’s New Game, Panopticon, Looks Incredibly Stylish

By Ishaan . May 16, 2013 . 6:00am

Sony are teasing a new game in Japan, titled Panopticon, which looks to be set in a dystopian world. A CG trailer for the game is available for viewing below, with more information expected on May 21st, according to the game’s website.

The trailer almost makes Panopticon seem like another hunting-action game along the same lines as Monster Hunter, God Eater and Soul Sacrifice, but with more flair. Hopefully, we learn more about the game soon.

  • zed grim

    me want.

  • Akuosa

Nothing against Soul Sacrife, as I’m enjoying the game a lot, but I like this kind of style far more, I’m not too much of a fan of “dark settings”, let’s call it. We’ll see when we can take a look at some gameplay.

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Interestingly, everyone who is “caught” in the trailer had their numbers on their head turning red.

When the dood with the headphones rescued the android chick, his numbers turned blue again?

And that baby – BORN with a red number? Hmmm

      • makubexnas

        A timer or HP ?

      • Leitiso

They actually explain it if you read up on the other stories about this game. Red number is how much they are sentenced to prison. The reason they fight is to save the civilians in order to lower the sentence set FROM BIRTH. So the blue was deducting sentence. Concept kind of takes from “IN TIME” The story will be intriguing. I don’t understand why people are so against clones flooding the market. This is how we expand on a genre, it’s competition. Without MonHun there would be no soul sacrifice, god eater etc. We want a variety that reaches different people and introduces them to a type of game. They each bring something to the table, and the different stories used to be enough to justify a game separating from another. Maybe since that isn’t the case so much anymore, that is the why there had been so many lackluster story driven games out there.

    • Ultima-X

I agree with you. I’m also kind of tired of the European Medieval setting of Tolkien clones as well. It’s one of the many reasons why I like JRPGs a lot more.

  • Vernauth

    Death Note + God Eater

the protagonist looks like light yagami and there is shinigami eyes? lol

    • MXC

      + Conception

Depending on what the birth scene means as well.

      • Kevadu

I seriously doubt this is *anything* like Conception.

Heck, that’s not even how children are born in Conception…

        • MXC

Yea looking back I doubt it has something to do with that. I said after looking at it the first time. But I do wonder what the whole birth stuff means. It might be connected to the moment at 1:20 where a sign says
          “NEED CASH!!”
          “FOR LIFE!!”
who knows it’s still pretty vague at this point.

  • Nas

    Was that Big Ben.

  • zweii

The lead is Justin Timberlake just trying to make a living because the currency are all ‘In Time.’

  • SirTeffy

Also known as “Shinigami Eyes: The Game”, apparently. I wonder how the visible lifespans will play into the game…? It’s also interesting that there is no system listed…

  • cloudcaelum

Looks like God Eater but i believe will be more good, cuz Japan Studio!

  • uduvicio01

MMMM i sincerely see it like something without soul… it looks so generic.
In some scenes it shines with a little more personality but over all i feel it like a stereotyped japanes group of disgusting beautifull and good heroes with some fan service ready to run.

Soul Sacrifice has soul (lol) Soul Sacrifice makes you think, cry, ecc. ecc. the story is great and the game style is totally different from MH, Soul Sacrifice is really new and has the biggest personality i’ve seen since MH, everything else looks so clones to me… even God Eater suffered of stupid japanese character and no personality iven if it was funny… i look more for Toukiden…

I wished Panopticon was something about plot and free masons :(

    • Solomon_Kano

    • JoJo_649

Chill out dude, it’s only a teaser, it could be a traditional RPG not even closely related to Monster Hunter for all we know.

  • MogCakes

The giant missile launching robots make all the difference between this and other MH clones (and MH). There’s nothing about gameplay though, so we still don’t know what kind of game it is.

  • Keima88

Ooh looks very interesting. So everyone got a timer on his/her head huh? The short haired blond girl got a cybernetic arm (She started as a normal baby, so does that mean people get arrested to be modified to be turned into *soldiers*?). And they got a thorny black red grapling hook. Oh yeah and the guys at 0.46 of the video… Yu Narukami clones?

    Interesting very interesting.

Oh for wich platform is it? Anyone knows? I noticed the Playstation icon in the beginning of course so its probably for the vita or ps3.

Edit: I went to the website and I saw this text : to 100.000 years.
    To 100.000 years? Huh?

    • Bobby Jennings

Probably PSvita, telling from this CGI. Just a guess though.

      • sandra10

If it is CGI. But if it’s ingame like Knack’s cutscenes then I think it’s a PS4 game. And that might be the case since SCEJ uses ingame and comic book cutscenes more than CGI nowadays.

        • Solomon_Kano

I got the feeling that this was for PS4 myself. There’s a certain quality to the visuals that very much reminded me of Knack. I don’t know how to put it. It’s not the art style per se, but…

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

    Reminds me of Psycho Pass

  • SirRichard

Looks potentially interesting enough, presumably it’s another Monster Hunter-style game with some sort of “you can see your lifespan” twist? Not sure how that’d work, really.

  • Derry Santoso

Is this death note MH version? Lol looks really stylish

  • Arcana Wiz

Giants robots, Timers on heads, apocalyptic city, god eater feel, probably robots playable characters …

    Why not?

  • Hexen

The tune sounds like from Peace Walker.

  • Looking good, looking good. Interested to see more. Since Japan Studio is involved – and loved Gravity Rush – this game definitely has a higher priority on my list of “Games to Watch.”

  • So…. are those numbers some sort of “death clock” like the one in DeSu: Overclocked? And ppl can measure the value either using machines or have lucky eyes? Some sort of dystopian MH style game or JRPG? Count me interested.

  • Ni

I want that this game turn out to be a Action RPG more than a Hunting game. But whatever the genre this gonna be, they already got my SCi-fi maniac side hyped for this.

  • Anime10121

That looks amazing! Love the countdown clocks over the characters heads, hoping that this will do what the movie In Time failed to do and expand on such an awesome scenario.

And did anyone else hear a bit of the MGS theme tucked away in that theme? It sounds eerily similar to me :)

  • Pain777sev

It appears we will hear more on the 21st strategically of course of this month and this title is for the PS3, PS Vita AND the PSP. Really looks cool that is for sure. Need to see more. I forget the source but they are saying that what I stated above is confirmed.

  • Go2hell66

Reminds me alot of the digital devil saga opening

  • MrRobbyM

I really like the blend of realism and anime style. Though the style tells me it will be a Vita game. Sony’s gotta really push this now that Monster Hunter is favoring Nintendo platforms now.

    • Solomon_Kano

With Soul Sacrifice having JUST come out and God Eater 2 and Toukiden on the way, I can’t see them doing another hunting game on Vita — much less announcing one — so soon. A thousand clones doesn’t make up for the absence of the real thing.

      • ronin4life

In fact, all it does is devalue the genre on vita and make them look kind of pathetic…

        • Solomon_Kano

Exactly. When the genre becomes a dime a dozen, it’ll be harder and harder for any of them to have some meaningful effect on the platform or to carve any kind of position for themselves. It doesn’t help that they’re already in the shadow of MH. Overcrowding would not be in their best interest.

      • MrRobbyM

I’m assuming this is a much faster paced kind of hunting game with a more focused story and much different visual style. So if it does turn out to be that, it’d be much different from Soul Sacrifice and will appeal to semi-different audience. Besides, this is from Sony’s Japan Studio. Not Bamco or Tecmo Koei/Omega Force.

Sure, It’s probably not a hunting game but maybe comparable.

        • Solomon_Kano

I’m aware that it’s from Sony and the other two aren’t. What I’m saying is, with them having just put out their own hunting game (which Japan Studio co-developed) and there being two other hunting games already in the pipeline — from them or otherwise — I don’t think they’ll put out another one so soon.

I’m sure it would be different from Soul Sacrifice if it’s a hunting game, but all hunting games have something to set them apart, so that doesn’t really change anything.

  • Solomon_Kano

The font of the numbers and the kid having headphones (he’s got a Nomura-esque level of straps too lol) reminded me of TWEWY. Which this obviously isn’t connected to, but that popped into my head. For reference:

But HOLY BALLS that was slick. Japan Studio NEVER disappoints!

Unless I’m looking at the Panopticon title from the wrong perspective, I get this feeling like we’re looking at the first PS4/Vita game.

    • PS4? Really? I was thinking Vita-only. I guess we’ll find out soon enough, but IMO, this is another attempt by Sony to make up for Monster Hunter’s absence, following Soul Sacrifice. I don’t think putting it on PS4 and Vita both would do them any favours, so I suspect it might be exclusive. I guess we’ll find out…

This looks way more interesting to me than Soul Sacrifice did, though. I love the setting and art.

      • Solomon_Kano

Well, I can see the angle you’re coming from, but that’s insistent on this actually turning out to be a hunting game. The trailer SCREAMS hunting game, which would obviously be a proposition for Vita, but I’m betting against it being a hunting game.

Sony just had Japan Studio working on Soul Sacrifice, Namdai’s got God Eater 2 (the biggest non-MH hunting game), and TK’s got Toukiden coming. I can’t honestly see Sony turning around and sticking Japan Studio on another hunting game, Vita or otherwise, right after that. They’d be spraying from the hip, throwing out hunting game after hunting game and praying for a headshot.

Soul Sacrifice made suitable headway as a new IP in the genre, why spend the resources on another one so soon? They’d end up cannibalizing themselves. So my money’s on this not being a hunting game at all. Action/action-RPG with multiplayer perhaps, but not actually a hunting game. The PS4 thinking is really just because the visuals reminded me of Knack lol.

        • Oh, it could turn out to be something that isn’t a hunting game, but Sony’s recent Vita marketing is why I’m hedging my bets on it being that. They’ve been very keen to let players (and developers) know that they’re carving out their own niche in the hunting games market.

I get what you’re saying about shooting from the hip and a dozen “clones” not replacing an actual Monster Hunter, but at this point, that’s really their best shot, isn’t it? And this game actually looks very stylish and cool. Judging solely by that teaser, it already looks like the kind of game that would be more appealing to Japan than Soul Sacrifice.

Plus, Japan Studio only collaborated on Soul Sacrifice… actual development was done by Marvelous AQL. If they’re announcing this now, it means it’s been in the works for a while. :)

          • Solomon_Kano

I thought Japan Studio and MAQL co-developed it? If not, then that’s that, though it’d still be odd (to me, anyway) to see them start two IP in the genre so close together. I mean, they do own the Soul Sacrifice IP, right?

I can’t really agree on it being their best shot. It seems like the right idea, since MH saved the PSP, but now MH is… MH. Trying to find it’s replacement by aping it won’t work when the real deal is alive and well and has simply taken its audience to another platform.

I think the best illustration of this situation is the iPhone’s relationship to the mobile market as whole and the search for the “iPhone killer”. That’s allowed some hardware makers to carve out a comfortable niche (Samsung’s Galaxy S series, Nokia’s Lumia series), but none of them have succeeded in toppling (or even budging, really) the king of the hill. That’s where I see this whole hunting thing heading.

Now, there are gaming examples that show why this could pay off for Sony (COD overtaking Medal of Honor, dancing games overtaking Guitar Hero/Rock Band, etc), but I see this amounting to nothing significant. To be fair, I also don’t think Sony expects to find something capable of rivaling MH, but trailing behind it doesn’t look like the way to go given how wholly MH dominates that market.

          • I agree that aping Monster Hunter doesn’t make for a very convincing argument for the general public to run out and buy Vitas, and at the same time, it only makes it even more apparent that MH is MIA from the system. That said, it’s also a question of what the alternative is, isn’t it?

Japan is the one territory where the Vita actually has a chance to pick up a little bit, since the market over there is more focused on portables. While the Compile Hearts and Idea Factories will continue to make Vita games for the otaku market, those won’t really further Sony’s cause. At least this way, they’re going after a market that is at least somewhat guaranteed to respond to their effort and expand the Vita audience beyond just the otaku niche.

While it hasn’t sold half a million copies, Soul Sacrifice did manage to sell Vitas to people that aren’t just looking for T&A. It’s been their most successful attempt at selling Vitas to date, so from that POV, I could see them trying again.

I mean, look at Nintendo. They’ve got lots of different stuff in development for 3DS, but a lot of it is still Mario, Mario, Mario.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, from that perspective, it would make sense for them to give it another go. I’m hoping they think of something else, but it’s conceivable that Soul Sacrifice’s success would encourage another stab at the genre. Especially considering that success came in spite of a aesthetic largely at odds with Japan’s usual taste. So doing another hunting game with a much more… typical visual style should bring them even more success.

            Guess we’ll see.

  • KuchikiSentou

Wow everyone beat me to the DeathNote reference. Damn it!
    Hopefully it’s not [just] a PS3 title.

  • ChiffonCake

Not enough information yet, but it does look good, and I’m loving the style they went with for the graphics.

  • Guest

Im getting sick of people having so much scifi in fantasy games. Guns, guns, and more guns, spamming the screen and all of this other new technology. I don’t see a point in using a sword or bow if all they could use are those. FF13 the “gunblade”. SE, make a dark rpg without GUNS in them.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Wat. This is Sony.

  • Jesse Torres

It looks very interesting so far.

  • Zenthos

Imo. Im bit tired of seeing so much scifi fantasy games made my Sony. The entire screen was littered with guns except that weapon at the end.

    • Solomon_Kano

Also, monsters does not a fantasy game make. The game clearly moves between a very modern city and some other setting. It’s not that there’s “sci-fi in a fantasy game,” there just so happen to be monsters in this very modern world.

      • Zenthos

        I could be like a butthurt “Ferrick” and hound you for your grammatical errors (“monsters does not a fantasy game make”) and other irrelevant crap but instead I say this;

It just seems like guns are the appeal to fending off fantasy-like creatures, I don’t see how it would bring any diversity other than holding down a button, especially since it was one of the only weapons shown.

        • Solomon_Kano

And if you did, you would be wrong. Rhetoric tip: that’s called hyperbaton.

Saying that you wouldn’t point it out by pointing it out… that’s pointing it out. But, since you’ve done so, it’s actually not incorrect.

Surely, in your assessment of my grammar you noticed that was the ONLY thing “off”. That should have indicated that, perhaps, that was merely something that went over your head and not a grammatical error. It should have indicated that, perhaps, that was intentional. And it was.

In the future, please stay on the topic at hand rather than trying to get into discussions about people’s grammar. There are lots of people who do unintentionally use poor grammar around here, after all, as not all of the folks posting here speak English as their first language.

As for the rest of your post, I’m not sure what you’re arguing. You said you’re tired of guns in fantasy games, my response was that having monsters doesn’t make this a fantasy game. That’s independent of any gameplay implication.

Besides that, this is an early (not gameplay) trailer. There’s likely more than guns available in the game and, if there aren’t, whose to say you’d only be holding down a single button? That’s how FPSs and TPSs do it, but this doesn’t look to be either of those.

          • Zenthos

Using remarks such as “glasses” is what I meant. And “hound”, not “pointing it out”. You should tell that to Ferrick here as well, since it seems your intent on singling me out.

Im not arguing anything. Who knows what the game will look like when it comes out, I was making assumptions based one what I saw and experience with past games. You’ve proven otherwise so im not going to complain.

          • Solomon_Kano

Ferrick didn’t respond to me, he responded to you. I’m not “singling” you out, I’m responding to your attempt to divert the conversation to my grammar. It’s not my problem if Ferrick does the same to you. Should he discuss my grammar, I’ll say the same to him as well.

And you’re still trying to make corrections? Really? No point in doing that, man. I wasn’t looking to quote you, which is why I didn’t say “hound”. Like I said, move on from the grammar talk, it’s starting to make you look petty.

          • Ferrick

i don’t remember the part where saying something that’s not correct accounts as grammatical error, that’s just your delusion, heck even the title says “Sony” in readable font, why would you veer off to saying that its SE, and you made the same mistake twice.

i seriously didn’t mind it when you edited it in the end but the fact that you called me out and calling me butthurt for pointing out your mistake is ridiculous.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Butthurt and delusion usually don’t bring much to the table either. Fanning endless poop only makes the smell worse.

          • Ferrick

Fanning the what now?! Fanning the flame is one thing, but this is something you don’t see everyday XD

          • M’iau M’iaut

Seeing threads falling into chaos? That still happens. Just don’t feed the pokemon :P.

          • Ferrick

i won’t, i don’t even have any rare candies or berries to feed them with XD

        • M’iau M’iaut

You seem to make a habit of wheedling folks in order to get the reaction desired. More than once with multiple posters. If you want to discuss the post, fine but keep it at that.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Umm this is made by Sony Japan though?O_o

    • Ferrick

you might want to use glasses because this is made by sony, not SE

      • Zenthos

Yup, just used the edit button.

  • Revorse

There’s alot of talk about this being a Hunter type game and on a handheld, my question is, why are there so many Hunter type games on handheld? I’d like on for a console.

    • Solomon_Kano

Because a large part of hunting games’ popularity is derived from their social nature. With Japan’s structure and the ubiquitous nature of public transport, people often play their handhelds en route to work/school/what have you. So there’s always somebody in the vicinity for you to play with, be they a friend or a total stranger. That element is entirely lost on consoles, as playing online doesn’t offer the same experience.

That said, you can find a few hunting games on consoles. MHTri/U being the obvious one, but there were also MH games on PS2. If you’re willing to import, there’s also the PS3 versions of the Dynasty Warriors Multi-Raid titles.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Because Hunting game is best selling on Japan which is also highly dominated by handheld?
Outside of Japan sadly, Hunting genre is not really big.T_T

  • Byas

Wow, Idk if it was just me but I got a Devil Survivor feel from this trailer… I really hope that the CG trailer is misleading and that it doesn’t turn-out as a MH-clone since I got hyped on this atmosphere but would probably turn away from it if it was yet another one of this genre.

  • AyaisMUsikWhore

This must be that killer game that one Sony Exec was talking about. It’s definitely a Vita game. But I noticed a lot of reminisce of ‘The World Ends With you’ in this. Hmm. I’m sure it’s another hunter game but I guess this genre is high in demand. MH I think finally has some competition and I’m happy about that. Though COD is still the highest selling FPS, that doesn’t mean other games can’t come out and change it up. I’m seeing this genre as exactly that… Well ill wait for the game play

    • sandra10

If we’re thinking about the same guy, the game that exec was talking about was a third party game so it’s not Panopticon.

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m sorry, but where is Monster Hunter’s competition? The most popular hunting game after MH is God Eater, and that didn’t even do half of MH’s numbers. Soul Sacrifice has yet to do half of God Eater’s, so whhat is this competition.

Or are you saying that this title could give MH a run for it’s money when we don’t even know that it’s a hunting game or what system it’s on?

      • AyaisMUsikWhore

I’m saying that any competition is good regardless if good or bad. As I said COD is the popular game but that doesn’t stop others from offering something. If your bringing sales into this, that doesn’t matter to me. A good game doesn’t nt need tosell 15 mmillion copies to be considered competition. No FPS will take the audience away from COD but that doesn’t mean they don’t go down as the game that did put itself on the map. People need to get sales off their mouth because sales doesn’t alway determine the better game, person or thing. MH is a big game that everyone in the West loves and its the biggest and creator of the genre. Does that mean that other games can’t try different concepts though having the same game play? No. So yes, there is competition regardless of sales. That’s competition period.

        • Solomon_Kano

MH I think finally has some competition and I’m happy about that.

I thought that implied sales talk but, if not, my mistake. In the proper context of what you’re saying though, why the “finally” then? There have been other hunting games for years.

And nobody said sales make the better game. So chill. Also, no, not everybody in the west loves Monster Hunter. If that were the case the series would be a lot bigger.

  • Zeonsilt

I was not prepared for this.
    Day 1.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Hmm, rather than Mon Hun, i do feel that this gameis going to be nearer to Phantasy series.^_^”

  • michel

More news on the 21st of May?

Must be a game for the new XBox!

[ Escapes to save his life ———> ]

  • Alexandra Cordes

So much want. If this doesn’t come out here, it’s import time.

  • My feel it’s for Vita. In any case, I’m glad that Sony is making new games

  • amagidyne

Some inspired art direction going on there. Sometimes I wish I liked MH-style games or multiplayer in general.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

This looks so damn cool. I hope it isn’t a hunting game though…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Dude this looks Sick <3! Yells god eater

  • ZekeFreek

Enough with the fucking Hunter games already.

    • Ni

Not every game that has a party taking on a giant monster is a Hunter game

      • What else is it then? They’re called “hunting action” for a reason. That’s the name of the genre. Just like “FPS” and “RPG” are genres. :P

        • Solomon_Kano

Party + giant monsters = hunting action?

          • Ah, come on. You know what I meant.! :P

          • Solomon_Kano

I couldn’t resist the opportunity haha.

          • neogeno

Multiplayer + Giant Monsters + Realtime + Turn monsters into the latest fashion trends = Hunting action?

(But then what is Frontier Gate? Hmm…)

      • ZekeFreek

Riiiiiight. I’m sure this will be a quirky platformer.

  • Has a Shin Megami Tensei feel, hope there’s an a anime with a limited edition that fleshes out the story

    • qchto

definitely… also, am i the only one hearing the “law” theme at 0:08 – 0:13?

    • Ni

I got a DDS feeling from the trailer. and the numbers remind me of a old music video that my older brother used to like

      • That’s funny cause originally I was thinking Digital Devil Saga but wasn’t sure if many knew what it was so I said Persona

  • Sergio Briceño

So it’s safe to assume that it is either for PSP or PSVita, right? Since most CG trailers for PS3 games look a lot better. I guess We need more time to know exactly what this is about. Also there are apparently so many sources of inspiration ranging from other videogames, to anime and Hollywood movies (or maybe they don’t necessarily borrow from other sources but at least that is what it looks like to me).

Music sounds like the Terminator 2 theme.
Combat looks like Attack on Titan.
Gameplay and scenery looks like God Eater.
Character Design looks like Death Note.
And the fact that they have a set time to live since birth kind of suggests some In Time inspiration.

    • sandra10

CG and 2D animated cutscenes are made independently from the games and so, they don’t need a stronger console to deliver better CG which is why Square Enix’s CG cutscenes in their PSP games were just as good as those in their console games.

      • Sergio Briceño

You know what I mean and that this obviously isn’t a PS3 exclusive. Less powerful consoles rely a lot more on CG and there are a lot of PS3 games (even japanese ones) that look better in real time than this one looks on CG.

        • sandra10

So, if you think that PS3 games look better in real time than this, how do you know that it’s CG and not real time?

          • Sergio Briceño

You mean aside from the camera angles, the slow-mos, the shiny skin on the characters and the carefully placed music to go with the action? I honestly have no idea.

          • sandra10

They can do all of that stuff with real time cutscenes. If they couldn’t, we’d be seeing far more games with CG.

          • Sergio Briceño

Last comment just to check if you are really being serious or not.

So if the hardware is strong enough they could produce inferior CG. You are right, but what is the point?

If a portable can’t handle such high quality in real time, then they wouldn’t necessarily try CG instead? You are right again, it’s a given for most companies, but we are talking japanese companies on Siliconera. Japanese love CG.

          • sandra10

The point is progress – they want to show off what the PS4 can do and CG like visuals is definitely on the list.

There aren’t many Japan Studio games with CG cutscenes. They’re not the typical Japanese company.

          • Sergio Briceño

Ok. So you were being serious. Let’s make a bet then. I bet that is at least coming to either PSP or Vita. And that it’s definitely not coming to PS4. What do you say?

          • sandra10

I say it’s definitely not coming out to the PSP or PS3. If it’s CG, it’s a Vita game. If it’s real time, it’s a PS4 game. Given the quality of the cutscenes (they had wayyyy better CG before), yeah, I’m going with PS4 just like Knack and soon enough, The Last Guardian.

          • Sergio Briceño

AAAAND seems like I win. Like I said, definitely a Vita Game.

            Pay up.

    • Solomon_Kano

“Gameplay and scenery looks like God Eater.”

      There is no gameplay.

      • Sergio Briceño

Gameplay is going to be “hunt down massive monsters with sci’fi weapons”.

  • heartless141

no one mention it yet so far so….

that red wire and the dude’s (?) scabbard looks like Shingeki no Kyojin’s thingie

  • Ni

People really need to stop comparing every game that has a big monster on screen with Monster Hunter. its like Action, Adventure and RPGs games never had a Big monster on screen before MH.

    • TheExile285

      Good god, I agree.

    • TBH, it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus more, especially if all you have are big monsters and there’s no grinding.

      • Considering the entire point of Shadow of the Colossus is isolated puzzle solving (the monsters were really just big platforming puzzles) and not co-op combat mechanics, I can’t disagree with you more. Annoying as people may find it, the Monster Hunter comparisons are apt, and that’s what Sony WANTS the Japanese to think of when they see it. A co-op action game where you fight big monsters.

    • WhyWai

      Well, not just big monster.

Combination of overly big monster, a team of fighters with similar style, weapon based combat. You can guess it’s a MH type game.

RPG tend to have characters with very different job class and combat style. which this doesn’t seem to be,

  • Namuro

Hmm… JAPANStudio + Hunting game(?) + Lovely Music + Seemingly interesting story + Big guns and monsters + Giant mech and robot girl…

Also, that number above the head thing, at first it reminds me of TWEWY, but the million over the baby at the end makes me think of Gurren Lagann…

  • PersonaSpace

I am most certainly intrigued by this. Looking forward to more news.

  • Aristides

Wow this looks like the matrix/ghost in the shell type of setting :P It also looks like Vita software and it does seem a bit hunterish with that big monster fight. I really wish it to be an ARPG though, we have too many hunting games. I’ll be looking forward to this regardless.

lol OMG it has an eye at the end of the trailer! Sony has joined the Iluminati!

  • Chiupon

Reminds me a little of S4 League mixed with God Eater O:
and yeah i know everyone is giving all these impressions on what it reminds them of, but like…
it’s definitely not that original looking, as of right now.
Does look really interesting though. I hope it’s an MMO.

    • Solomon_Kano

Sony’s MMOs come through SOE. This is Japan Studio, so it won’t be an MMO.

      • Chiupon

        SOBBING ;A;

  • Sephiroth420

    • Probably

    • ffboi7

probably if you think back to that twitter post about a big title coming the Vita

      • Sephiroth420

oh yeah i was hoping for a final fantasy but this looks intriguing.

  • Wow, I need to see more NOW! That was an awesome trailer. I got a Digital Devil Saga feeling from the world that they’re in, and so did the graphics. Either way, I’m in agreement that I want this day 1. Really hope we get to see more on this soon. =^_^=

    • kenshee

If the battle themes are anything like the digital devil saga ones, then I’m in! :p

      • Yup, I love the Shin Megami Tensei soundtracks =)

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Apparently a fan of In Time and MH. Japan Studio doing it right!

  • Guest

If it’s coming to the Vita as well, this is probably my response: “Great! The Vita is finally getting another game! Wait…what? It’s yet another one of those monster-hunting type game? >.>”

  • Ryan Chiu

Totally reminds me of God Eater, the art style. If this has a story comparable to GE, then I definitely want this game.

  • neogeno

Well THIS certainly caught me off guard. A stylish hunting style game from Japan Studio?! I must see more of this. Its one hell of a tease!

  • Kevin Schwarz

I say it could be a FPS! But… knowing the japanese market, that would be just a dream.

    • Carabutifarra

      A nightmare you mean.

      • Kevin Schwarz

LOL indeed. Since dreams and nightmares are essentially the same, only their trigger is different. Yeah, FFVII DoC proved it….

  • Unknown

    please be an rpg

  • Vitor Duarte

Please let it be for the Vita!

  • Looks beautiful.

  • Höhlenmensch

I really really hope that this is for PS3 or PS4.

  • Learii

I love the music maybe this be for ps4

  • HerosLight

My interest for this game has sky rocketed.

Am I the only one who thinks the guy with the red eyes with headphones looks like Light from Death Note?

  • edomon007

please let this be a cross buy

  • JustThisOne

Psycho Pass meets Attack on Titan! *shot*

  • TheExile285

A new IP from Japan Studio? Oh yes, please. Hopefully this is PS4 exclusive.

    • ffboi7

It will definitely be Playstation exclusive considering I’ve never seen Japan Studio develop for other platforms.

      • Solomon_Kano

Well, yes, but that doesn’t mean it will specifically be PS4 exclusive. Could be PS4/Vita, PS3/Vita, PS3/PS4/Vita.

      • TheExile285

I said PS4 though. Since PS4 is coming out soon, I feel like Sony should be diverting focus to it with its console games. It doesn’t have BC and PS3 is getting plenty of 3rd party support so why they would do stuff like announce GT6 as PS3 exclusive is beyond me.

      • brian

They are a Sony studio, notice the PS face buttons in their logo.

  • tubers

It was more interesting the first minute.. but then.. Dragons!?

  • DemonicX

Well…now I want this. I have a feeling that this will be only on the PS4 though so it looks like I’ll definitely have to purchase one whenever. The game is truly looking amazing, and I’ll be looking forward to more information.

  • vileBrenman

After playing soul sacrifice I for one am open to play more Sony hunting games if that’s what this is. either way this looks promising

  • Warboss Aohd

i seriously hope it ain’t like Monster Hunter.

  • Spider-Man

The protagonist will take a potato chip….and EAT IT!

But seriously, looks great. Guess this was Light’s fate after Death Note’s end. We’ve gotten several JapanStudio games before right? Like Tokyo Jungle. Think we’ll get this?

    • Solomon_Kano

It’s already been trademarked by SCEE. No first-party game hits Europe that doesn’t hit the US, so we’re definitely getting this.

      • brian

Dark Mist never came to NA, but that was psn only.

        • Solomon_Kano

Dark Mist also wasn’t a first part game. SCE published it, but it was developed by Game Republic.

      • Spider-Man

This is good to know, thanks. I’ll save you as a reward if you’re in trouble.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yaaaay! Help is always appreciated lol.

  • brian

Did this remind anyone else of Eve no Jikan?

  • TrevHead

Looks good but I hope this is on the PS3/4 and not handhelds, we have enough MH clones on them.

  • Have you ever wondered if this title is a new PS4 IP and the scenes showed on the trailer are actually in-game real time scenes? Maybe I’m expecting too much, but there’s a possibility. Also, the graphic quality and style are pretty much the way I wish the next Persona game should be!

  • WyattEpp

    Minority PersoNote XIII Burst.

I will exchange legal tender for this consumer good. Like the fist of an angry god.

  • Do not know why but it reminds me of the opening scene of Digital Devil Saga. looks good though. I see a whip mechanic( All characters had one ), so I think it’s akin to DmC pull. Secondary fire arm weapon..wonder what else they bring. looks more like God Eater which is GREAT!!

  • The Watcher

nice concept, keeping my eye on this one.

  • artemisthemp

I like the art style, but I will need to see a Gameplay trailer or try a demo to decided, if I gonna buy this or not.

  • Damarius Wingfield

I wish we had more HD ANIME CHARACTERS HUZZAH!

  • Göran Isacson

I’m usually pretty skeptic towards hunting games, but I gotta admit- I really dug the look of this one. Even if this was just a trailer with little actual gameplay, the style and numbers and bizarre goings-on really struck a chord in me. My interest is peaked, now to see if it remains that way..,

  • fireemblembeast

    The headphones guy is hot.
Just putting that out there… =3=
