Attack On Titan Games Coming From Steins;Gate Developer Nitroplus

By Spencer . May 19, 2013 . 10:18pm

attackonThe anime series Attack on Titan will be released on Blu-ray soon. If you’re a fan of Hajime Isayama’s series you might want to get volumes three and six at launch. Those two volumes include visual novels developed by Nitroplus as a launch bonus. Namaniku ATK from Nitroplus is a character designer and the manga creator Hajime Isayama is supervising the stories.

Lost in the Cruel World on the third Blu-ray volume has a story from Hiroshi Seko about Mikasa Ackerman who meets Armin and Eren in the Recon Corps. A preview of A Choice With No Regrets from Gan Saaku is also included. This story focuses on Eren and Levi’s past. Attack on Titan volume three comes out on September 18.

Attack on Titan volume six is slated for December 18. This includes A Choice With No Regrets (the final version), an unnamed story about Eren and Ellen from Jin Haganeya, and an anime spin off Wall Sina, Goodbye from Hiroshi Seko.

The Blu-ray games will play on game consoles with Blu-ray drives like the PlayStation 3 and standard Blu-ray players/recorders.

Blah, such wasted potential on a visual novel

    • Raze

      I agree

    • Go2hell66

i’m sure even if it was an action adventure game it still wouldn’t live up to people’s expectations

      • Kevin Schwarz

But at least it would be…let’s say, “playable”?

        • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s not start old fires, please. For the folks who play them, the read/think/pick your favorite girl is as much game play as shooting everything that moves is to a shooter or questing and killing monsters is to a RPG.

It’s just not the game play you were hoping for in a Titan game, and it seems this is not the only AoT game coming.

          • Kevin Schwarz

Yeah, right, but the point is: this is attack on titan, not a VN perse.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Which as you noted started as a rough around the edges manga. Which would seem not that big of a stretch to use as the base for a small VN.

          • FlamingFirewire

Plus a VN takes considerably less to make than an action game with 3D polygons.

      • ShadowDivz

First of all, NOTHING lives up to expectations.

Secondly, a PS3 of AOT would be crazy sick. Give it an original story and customizable character. man that would be epic…. You know like ragnarok odyssey but better.

      • NTaiyokun

I could imagine Titan fights getting repetitive after a while…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Its a Side Story. There could be just expanding on the character background like the flashback in EP6 for all we know.

    • Kevadu

You’re kind of missing the point. This is bonus content on the blu-ray disc. It doesn’t even need a console, it just plays through the standard blu-ray menu system. Visual Novels are about the only kind of games you can do that way. And this in no way precludes making other games out of the source material.

Honestly I think it sounds pretty neat.

    • Pockystix

I imagine a game where you mostly aim for one spot on the enemies body
(the nape of their neck) would get repetitive. . . unless they really
      get into spoiler territory lol

      • Chiupon

They’d probably have to go there, into that “spoiler territory”. I mean it would have a lot of neat platforming potential and it is beneficial to attack to the limbs and muscles of particular titans to subdue them easier, but you would ultimately be going for the kill spot, but there’s a lot of things they could do gameplay wise to eliminate a lot of repetition of that; the anime/manga presents a lot of varied combat scenarios that would easily make for a fascinating (albeit extremely difficult) game. I would just love to play as Mikasa, leapin’ from building to building, slicin’ titans up.

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

Well I love the story so it’s going to be a sure buy for me

  • M’iau M’iaut

Fully expecting a Kurou and Al Azif cameo somewhere.

  • SuperSailorV

That’s funny, I just started watching this recently. Are there only 6 episodes or am I missing some?

    • Pandafilando

Seven as of today ( May 20), but if you are impatient you could pick up the manga, the artwork is kinda crude at the beginning but it gets better later on, ten volumes released so far in japan. (tough it’s newest chapters are only available in English through scanlations)

    • DemonicX

At the moment, there are only 7 episodes because the anime is currently airing. From what I’ve heard, the anime should have 25 episodes.

    • Chiupon

I recommend waiting for the anime to finish a bit. I started yesterday and now I’m like sleep deprived and crazed because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next and dived into about 32 40 page chapters.

      • Chiupon

like it’s so good and worth it but omg it’s life consuming

    • Kevin Schwarz

There is a manga, even though the story is sooo slow, I doubt the anime would cover even 25% of it so far this season… that’s how slow it is.

  • Pandafilando

It’ll be fine as long as Sasha appears …

But yeah, I think visual novel is the worst kind of genre they could have chosen for a game adaptation, I mean this series is so calling out for a Tower defense game XD

  • wererat42

    Mikasa Otome game.

Whoever survives to the end gets to go on a date with Misaka.

    • Kevin Schwarz

      Eren then, I suppose lol

  • Chrystofax

Well they are bonuses, if it were a full fledged game, am sure they’d release as a standalone product, I don’t really know why you’d complain about it being a VN

  • new_tradition

NitroPlus is the only VN developer I’m familiar with (though mostly due to getting into the Nitro+CHiRAL BL games). I’m under the impression they’re regarded quite highly (I haven’t played it, but even I know about Saya no Uta, lol), so I think they’ll treat this series with respect. Plus being able to play this in a regular Blu-ray player is a major plus (well, the region specific ones least) so even people not into the VN games can enjoy it.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

Saya No Uta is also well know due to Gen Urobuchi’s involvement with the game (He is also the writer and creator of Puella Magi Magicka Madoka).

As for this… I’d rather have an action adventure game but it still sounds great.

  • TiredOfMyOldUsername

Suck that this probably will never be released outside of japan.

    • Renaldi Saputra

we still don’t know so don’t easily prejudice

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

        That’s why i said probably…

It’s possible that this will be released outside of japan considering the anime and manga seem popular in the west and Nitro+ have a good relationship with Jast USA, but still i think the chance are quite low.

      • Kelohmello

I’ll say it. I bet all of the money I have right now that this game won’t be released official in english. Ever. 100% guaranteed. It will never happen.

  • Vash bane

    interesting wasn’t expecting a VN.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    as ppl said..
    kyoujin everywhere

  • Freud_Hater

Honestly, a visual novel is just about the worst possible format an Attack on Titan video game could take. Here you have a world invaded by giants and young adults that have tools to make them move pretty much AS FAST AS THEY WANT ANYWHERE THEY WANT and you make a game that focuses on human relations? C’mon, this should be a kind of Shadow of the Colossus game, instead the character you play can move super fast and there aren’t 16 Colossi but like 10 000!! It could be so insanely epic!

    • Final Aura

I totally agree with you this just seems weak….

      • Kevin Schwarz

Indeed, count me in. No offense to VN fans, but attack on titan VN would suck titan’s butt…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Its a BD bonus content not a full game…. Also this seems to be those character building side story like the EP6 flashback so it might not even have Titans battle….

    • Ladius

Visual novels are one of the most versatile genres out there to flesh out any existing setting (and reducing AoT to mere combats seems strange, there’s a lot of emphasis on relationships and character interactions in the main series), not to mention the budget for a companion game in a BluRay release would never allow a more costly game.

Maybe they could make an action game as a stand-alone release with a normal budget and production cycle, but this isn’t the case. Even Namco’s BluRay games, while different in genres, were pretty much on the slim side because they couldn’t justify a big budget for a side project. Also, Nitroplus is one of the best visual novel developers, so those short novels could end up being quite rewarding.

  • Pockystix

    I’m actually hopin I can see a Christa x Ymir path~ XD

  • Chiupon

I just hope they don’t unnecessarily sexualize anyone. Attack on Titan is not that kind of IP; it actually respects it’s characters and story enough not to water it down with cheap fanservice.

If they did anything to derail Mikasa I imagine a lot of people would be upset.

    • Chiupon

literally did not expect 4 downvotes. Either trolling or i guess people like watered down plots that sacrifice character development and integrity for shower scenes?

  • Unlimax

Damn .. i was expecting Capcom to Develop and publish a game for this anime and make the gameplay look more brutal , oh well :

    • Kevin Schwarz

Imagine, 5.99 for each extra scenario as Disc locked DLC LOL

  • Ni

I am expecting a Shingeki no Kyojin DLC for God Eater Burst.
I would like that shift ended up making a game for this franchise, but most of the time anime games aren’t worth the expectation

  • Dutchy

there is a reason why “steins;gate developer” is in the title. steins;gate has a lot of action moments as well which are perfectly done in the visual novel format. sure a 3d game would be amazing but this is just a bonus and they have a certain budget to work with. visual novels are fairly cheap to make and choosing nitroplus is one of the best choices they could have gone with in my opinion.

I for one am really looking foreward to this.

    • Kelohmello

“visual novels are fairly cheap to make”

Noooot really. For Nitroplus, sure, they can afford it, because they’re one of the biggest companies for it, but that’s still not cheap for them, and to say that as a general statement is actually just wrong.

      • ShadowDivz

I just learned something. I thought they would be cheap to make. I mean, an artist or two, someone who can write a competent story and boom visual novel(programmers here and there).

Once again, the internet has informed me. Cheers! (actually not sarcastic just in a good mood)

  • L0NWolf

Fun fact: Namaniku ATK was the artist of Soukou Akki Muramasa (Nitroplus) and he made the first Attack On Titan doujins available XD

  • ChiffonCake

I really want an actual game more, but I’m ok with a VN, especially if Nitroplus is doing it. Also, Namaniku as the artist! His doujins were pretty nice so that’s even better.

  • Kevin Schwarz

I must be the only person who thinks this would be an awesome action game. Too bad it will be another VN…

  • biskmater

Now question is, who is writing them? of the two writers I know Urobuchi is the best for the utter existential despair, but if these VN aren’t exactly complete bad endings then perhaps Hagenaya would be the best given how good he is at shifting moods.

  • GH56734

Phew… It’s not impossible, it has been done already:
Just rework the concept of the Japan-only DS game Blood of Bahamut (or Shadow of the Colossus) but with higher res 3D (it’s strikingly similar in the premise but with more weak points) and add some platforming and grappling hook sequences in-between (maybe some random Titan sequences too with martial art because why not), and you have your epic Shinjeki no Kyojin videogame adaptation.
Oh yes, and some juicy Sound Horizon soundtrack for good measure.

  • Aoshi00

A VN is actually best suited for a bluray bonus game.. Like the macross do you remember love bluray game wasn’t that great.. There’s a lot of drama for Shingeki noKyojin just like the walking dead.. I bet telltale games could ve made an exciting VN out of this title too.

sounds like there’s tons of great bonus that come with the bluray, like episode 0 manga, CD drama,.and now VN.. This is the choice of steinsgate :)!

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

So this game will be about the characters’ social lives?

  • Robgoro

If they can find a cool way to use the 3D maneuver gear in a game, as well as do some swirly sword attacks at those dumb, apathetic looking’ 15m classes, I’m all over it.

  • TagAnarchy

I saw Nitro+ and instantly thought of the urobutcher. I wonder if he’ll have a hand in the story…

  • gamefreak86

I’m assuming no English subs. Hope Sony can start making deals and bring over VN on vita/PSP. Or if Crunchyroll can somehow start a division for distribution of bd or publishing games like this. VN totally underrated. Also I understand that people can download fan translations and all but I just want the simplicity of buy, load, play. The anime is absolutely fantastic. Marathoners it on CR last week.

  • ShinMarui

Ok I’m already at the website.. it said Bluray&DVD vol 3 and 6… So we can get the VN if we buy the DVD? Or must the Bluray version? Thank you if someone reply my stupid question… And also my stupid grammar
