Save The World With A Kiss In Unchained Blades Maker’s Next RPG, Exstetra

By Sato . May 29, 2013 . 5:02pm

Furyu, the developers of Unchained Blades have recently revealed their new role playing game called Exstetra (updated name from our earlier report). Famitsu gives us a look at the game’s story that will involve having to kiss others as a way to save the world from destruction.

After an abrupt fuse with a parallel-universe, Tokyo had been mutated as part of the world called Amasia, which is on the brink of destruction. The residents of Amasia claim that the main character, Ryoma Narusawa, is the “Prisma”, who is destined to save their world from collapsing.

Ryoma must find a way to defuse the worlds in order to bring things back to normal. Will he be able to save the many  who are at the verge of becoming nothingness along with the two worlds?

2013-05-29_155938Exstetra is a game that involves having to kiss in order to save the world. It may sound a bit confusing to think about how an act of affection could possibly save a world… but according to Famitsu, the main character, Ryoma, has the ability to absorb energy called “Ex” from enemies. The Ex can then be used to perform different acts of miracles. One of them being, the ability to kiss his allies to awaken their powers.

According to the people of Amasia, the Prisma is the one chosen to save their world from destruction. They have the ability to absorb Ex from enemies and use it for different purposes. The Prisma Knights are those who’ve been bestowed upon the powers from Ryoma’s kiss and have had their powers awakened. They will also play a role in saving the world by supporting Ryoma.

Here’s a look at three Exstetra characters that were recently introduced:

Ryoma Narusawa

The main character of Exstetra. According to the people of Amasia he is the “Prisma” who is destined to save their world from destruction. However, Ryoma doesn’t seem to know much as he seems to have lost all memories.

Shiho Inaba

Shiho is a 17-year old high school student who aspires to become an idol. After their world was engulfed by a parallel universe, she shared a kiss with Ryoma and became a Prisma Knight.

Masaru Mitarai

Masaru was pulled into the world of Amasia at the same time as Ryoma. He’s an energetic and upbeat young man. He’s also a Prisma Knight, which could only mean…

Exstetra is slated for release on October 17th for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

  • Solomon_Kano

    It’s not first-person? HALLELUJAH!

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Aksys is going to localize this? Is this the duo?

      • Solomon_Kano

We can only hope they pick this up.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      • Solomon_Kano

      • BenderIsGreat

      • Now all we need is….is…localization!

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

  • I thought this is going to be a first person like UB, but it isn’t and it looks great too! Now we need a confirmation from xseed or aksys…

  • fireemblembeast

Not first person?! :D They’re finally bringing out the big guns! Looks nice. Also…”exstetra”, huh? Is the s really necessary…? ^_^; Kinda redundant.
Too bad I’d need to wait for the localization because I’m not getting a Vita or a JP 3DS (anytime soon…)

  • DyLaN

So its kinda like the reverse of DAL where you give ppl power by kissing?

He’s also a Prisma Knight, which could only mean…
;) This is going to be amusing.

    • psycho_bandaid

“Ryoma, buddy, I am getting absolutely murdered in these battles. We need to kiss. For justice.”

“Just stick with the training program I outlined! We can make this work.”

“Don’t give me that… All right fine. We’ll try a fist bump first, though. If that doesn’t work then remember: WE DO NOT TALK about the kiss after we’ve done it. Deal?”

  • Glad this is not a first-person RPG, I do like those but we’ve got many lately TwT I like this game so far and I hope they decide to localize this, but I’m kind of…. creeped out that Masaru is also a Prism Knight… does that mean the protagonist actually kissed him .__.?

    • biskmater

eh likely one those wacky “woops, I tripped” hijinks, kind of the way it happened in Naruto, either that or gay option.

      • ronin4life

Most likely the first, with the option of seriously pursuing it as well.

        or possibly mouth-to-mouth.

    • This happened on Negima too though. lol. Mages had to form contracts by kissing. There two male characters that had contract powers so you could imagine where those came from.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Kirby should be a companion in the 3DS version. How many Helpers has he kissed over his career? I’m having a hard time picking Shiho or Masaru. Shiho is wearing a beret but Masaru is a guy… hmmm

    • PreyMantis

      Kiss? You mean swallowed.

      • puchinri

He does swallow enemies, but the ones that he turns into companions he does still kiss to share life with and such~.

    • puchinri

Hah! Good point. That’d be cute. I hope to see a comic of that.

  • Time Sage

    Gay option perhaps? :D

    • Guest

… no thank you. i hope it’s a misunderstanding or he’s irrelevant to the story! not that i have anything against gay people. i even support gay marriage in california. they can go get married, adopt children, be in my presence, and live happily ever after if they want. but i do not wish to experience that even in a game. my motto is,” go be gay but just not with me.”(joke… sort of.)

      • psycho_bandaid

to be fair, he did say “option” which I believe implies that you don’t really need to experience it if you don’t want to.

        • yo1234

i think he’s implying the other guy in this game. the game sort of implies that he also kisses the hero. which would be the gay option. which in the end would not be an actual option since he seems like a main character. if he meant an option in general then sorry lol.

          • Option is just that, an option. LGBT needs more representation within the gaming medium.

Is gay Shepherd a *requirement* in Mass Effect? Don’t think so!

          • yo1234

which is why i said i’m fine if it’s just an option. but i will delete my original comment since it sounds kind of dou*hey. although most of it was a joke, i still cant see myself getting into a game that has a strong lgbt element. but if it’s just an option then more power to you.
Edit: …. all it did was change my username to guest. ah wells. whatever.

      • Wtv

There are two kind of sentence that homophobic people use here. Just warning you.

This game seems aimed to girls anyway, so yeah…
Stop the self-insert, Japan doesn’t care about this.

      • Time Sage

That’s actully pretty offensive. If I was standing infront of you kissing another guy would you tell us to go away?

    • Magicks

I was thinking about the same thing. Also I pray that they define what type of kiss. God help us if we have the kiss monsters in the mouth to gain powers. ._.

      • Why would we have to kiss monsters to gain their powers? It says he can absorb the monster’s Ex energy, which is probably going to be just by defeating them.

  • Highasthesky

Masaru Mitarai….you better not ruin this for me….

  • Wtv

This concept would be good with a female character. srsly

    • ShadowDivz

I know. a female character going around kissing girls and making her own harem… of chicks? Awesome.

  • vanhyde

    Okay, IM IN !

  • z_merquise

He’s also a Prisma Knight, which could only mean…

    He’s kissed by the main character too. Who is a guy. Yeah I know . . . oh wait . . .

  • These must be 3DS screens, no way the coloring can be that bad on the VITA

    • Albert Calderon

The game is still be worked on.

The Vita version will probably be the graphically superior version.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Its kinda interesting to see what you can get out the 3DS by not using the 3D at all. 3D>1080p anyway. I know Ishaan agrees

        • Albert Calderon

I don’t think 1080p is the right choice, but without 3D on I think it should reach its native resolution and have nice visuals. The vita is just capable of more.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Kinda talking about games in general mate. Yes the vita is capable of more we know this

    • Suicunesol

Like hell they’re 3DS screenshots. They’re too clear and big and the interface elements would likely be moved to the bottom screen for the 3DS version. They’re Vita screenshots, or at least PC screenshots.

I want to see 3DS screenshots so I can make a proper comparison.

Either way, I HOPE THIS COMES OVER.

      • There’s no way this is VITA, the coloring is totally washed out

        • Suicunesol

I don’t understand. What do you mean washed out?

Maybe it doesn’t look colorful to you because your computer screen isn’t an OLED screen? Screenshots don’t necessarily do a game justice.

          I know it’s not 3DS because it’s too anti-aliased.

          • My reasoning for saying this is the 3DS version is graphics need to be toned down on games to run well. Her face is missing a lot of detail

It’s apparent in the other gameplay screens too

They have a huge lack of detail you won’t see in a VITA game

          • Suicunesol

Her face is missing details? Looks fine to me. She’s an anime character; there shouldn’t be many details in the first place.

Maybe it’s neither. Game is still in development. I know 100% that this isn’t how it would look on the 3DS (because that would be awesome).

          • There is a B button on the pictures and since VITA doesn’t have them~

          • Suicunesol

            Good eye. :O

However, I still don’t believe it. Changing the picture of the B-button to a square is very easy to do when a game is still in development. More importantly, the dimensions of the screenshots that have been given match the Vita’s screen dimensions perfectly. They don’t match with the 3DS dimensions.

          • Oh, It is!

So you think it’s too anti-aliased?

          • Suicunesol

Yes. Resolution is too high. Not enough “jaggies” as they call them.

          • But it’s the 3DS version that has screenshots, so that means it has a good resolution. The fact that there’s a B-button shown solidifies that this is only the 3DS version.

The graphics don’t really demand much resources in the first place, so the 3DS can pull this off without breaking a sweat. Then again, why would someone care about graphics in an anime-styled game?

          • D H

So, because the game has a style that isn’t as detailed as you expect, it must be “toned down” for the 3DS? It really can’t just be that maybe they designed it way they wanted to? I for one enjoy this current look; they look very similar to the artwork, and that’s as detailed as I need, as otherwise what was the point of using the illustrations in the game in the first place?

          • Kevadu

Just being on the Vita doesn’t automatically make character models more detailed. What you’re talking about are things like polygon counts and textures, which the develops would have to actually go in and change which they don’t always do for multiplatform games (sadly). There are plenty of examples of the Vita versions of games being stuck with 3DS-level character models. Time Travelers, Virtue’s Last Reward, etc.

    • Are you sure they simply didn’t want to push the system’s power? :(

  • JohnNiles

The protagonist ought to be sporting a permanent pucker.

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Chang-Si CHANG-SI! Chance! Channce for localization?

    System Error

    ??? Unkown ???

  • Albert Calderon

    Me want.

  • GHAmer

I think there is another Prisma beside Ryoma
and of course it is a girl (just don’t give us a gay scene .__.)

the silver haired girl in the screenshot maybe?

  • MrTyrant

Looks like a new “Shining” game haha. Anyway if there are good waifus and good gameplay I could take it. Hoping that saving the world through kissing don’t involve guys too. Eeeww.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

*cue Australian accent* It does. LAWL

  • SetzerGabbiani

  • kool_cid414

New chulip rpg announced lol. Good for them adding a guy character you can kiss I’m perfectly fine with that. I foresee a heap load of bl doujinshi in the future.

  • TheExile285

Oh wow. I hope Arkys or XSEED pick up the Vita and 3DS verions.

    • Zharkiel

Doubtful, but my vote goes to Aksys. This is the kind of game that screams digital only if done by XSEED. No offense to them, but I still like my physical media, and Aksys still delivers in that aspect.

  • yo1234

soooooo basically sort of like Date A Live?

    • biskmater

the reverse, actually, here we kiss to empower.

      • yo1234

If you haven’t seen at least up to episode 10 then stop reading.
you’re right that in date a live the women lose their powers after a kiss which would be the opposite. but the powers dont vanish. they go into shido. even if he doesn’t have direct control over them, there are still side effects like shown on episode 10 where he is unaffected by the barrier and his ability to heal. whether or not he gets more control of that power in future eps is beyond me. but that is the most cliche and suspected outcome. there are others but this isn’t really the place to discuss it.

        • biskmater

actually the healing at ep 3 gives it away first, but we are talking about the kissed, not the kissee right?

          • yo1234

ep 3 doesn’t give it away completely though since it was still unknown as to how he could heal himself. that wasn’t revealed until ep 10. anyways. im talking about the kissee(not a word but ill roll with it.) gah im confused now lol. if the guy gets power from the kiss then it’s the same as date a live. if the girl gets power or extra power from a kiss then it’s like sekirei and negima.

          • Kane Dragon (alias)

Well, it’s pretty clear-cut on how they described him using his abilities. He gets “Ex” from monster, then he gives Ex to allies through intimate interactions. In Date A, all Shido does is temporarily store a Spirit’s power inside himself which can be broken some degree depending on that spirit’s disposition and current situation. On a side note, I’m guessing he originally had his power that kept him alive just before he sealed Tohka’s when he sealed Kotori’s, else he’d have had to sealed a different seirei earlier on or he’d be playing cards now with death if that wasn’t the case unless he has seirei powers of his own.

          • yo1234

I assumed hew was a spirit at first. but episode 10 pretty much dissolved that.

          • Kane Dragon (alias)

Yeah, but now there’s that inconsistency that I said that needs to be acknowledged, or it could be just overlooked at all, but normally you’d think he’d remember about Kotori being a spirit or just spirits in general if the former of what I said was the case, if it’s not, then it may have been an oversight in the planning. It’s easy to have an idea created and put into stone before you expand on that idea and it then conflicts slightly with what was implied from the original idea, thus requiring more of a workaround to make it fit should one notice it.

          • yo1234

Well, he did say he had memory loss. Back when his (supposed) true sister was introduced to everyone. It’ll probably be lumped in with that.

          • yo1234

“One of them being, the ability to kiss his allies to awaken their powers.”
… how did i miss this

  • Go2hell66

    Oh anime….

  • kylehyde

Oh you Japan, please never change.

  • TheMasterHam

I would pick it up on 3DS.

  • fyi1191

    Should have been Shining Prisma.

  • I think having the guy/guy thing in there is really neat. It could make for some interesting narrative if nothing else.
Think of the shenanigans, people! The misunderstandings! The awkward walk-in-at-the-wrong-times! The oddly sexist idea that the guy/guy kiss unleashes the strongest powers of all!?
…I just think it’s a fun twist on the harem-hero genre. /rant end

Game looks cool. Dat T2 art.

    • MellowMadman11

I agree, at the very least it’s good to see something generally different being done.

    • puchinri

Would it be sexist? It’d certainly be pro-something worthwhile and positive at least. And refreshing. x’D

    • ShadowDivz

Agreed, i would have just passed this off as “another harem visual novel” until i saw the guy.
I have no interest in other men, but the fact that they threw that in the game to make it different appeals to me.

      • Yes, exactly.
…And should I have qualified my comment saying that I’m also not interested in other men? Well, I mean, not that it needs said, but…
Wow. This is the exact goofiness I would expect. I suppose it makes for a decent example.

  • Reiko_Chan

Kind of reminds me of Sekirei with the kiss aspect.

  • Heriel

    hope this gets localization

  • Nothing for girls :C

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Did you not see Masaru’s description? That has shonen ai (AKA “boy’s love”) all over it. Unless the devs find another way for how his Prisma Knight selection went through…

      • Sorry but I don’t like Yaoi and shonen ai… Uhg..

        • ShadowDivz

Interesting. Usually girls into anime(im assuming ur female) are all over that.

          • Yes, I’m a girl and no, I don’t like yaoi for very reasons~

  • Keima88

Looks like art from Tony Taka?

    • More like Katsumi Enami(Ao no Kiseki, Baccano!), not sure though.

Edit: Nevermind didn’t look at the girls face, yeah sameface Taka~

      • Suicunesol

        It’s both.

        • Keima88

Yeah thats why I am so confused haha.

        • Thought so, the dudes didn’t look like Taka at all, thanks~

  • natchu96

Let me guess, and some sort of complex relationship occurs with someone from Amasia and the main characters, and some hesitation concerning whether they really want to go through with the plan ensues . . .

Oh well, there really aren’t too many possible stories that can be told. It’s the plot details that make it entertaining.

  • ZekeFreek

Such a plain boring kiss couldn’t save anything. You need an extraordinary physics-defying kiss. Like kissing someone after falling out of a block of ice in mid-air… that’d be cool. (+5 geek cred to anyone who gets the reference).

So it’s pretty much Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls with the addition of dudes.

  • I must now have this for my 3DS! 8-]

  • So who do I have to kiss to get this localized!?

    • Then it’s Aksys. Nintendo if you want to hold them to their word, but they need to focus on Wii U games at the moment.

      • Then Aksys better pucker up lol

      • yo1234

i will literally rage if this becomes a nintendo exclusive over here. flipped cars, broken walls, large footprints. i’ll go hulk on the motherf…

        • Something tells me you missed out on a 3DS. :/

          • yo1234

Well it’s still available for purchase but i don’t really want a 3ds. i already had the other handhelds spanning from color to ds and they weren’t really that appealing(they were gifts as a kid). only games i ended up liking were the pokemon games and those got old fast. besides, i can buy so many games and anime with that money.

          • So you got a Vita instead? I haven’t been hearing as much as a peep for the Vita. You’re still missing out on alot of games though.

          • yo1234

Yea. But i never had a psp. so i get to play p4g, ac3 liberation, and psp games. There should be more vita games to come like valhalla knights 3 and ys celceta this year so it was the obvious choice between 3ds and vita. especially since nintendo handhelds have a smaller life cycle between their generations. i do however crave some of their games like shin megami tensei 4.

    • Kai2591

your comment and your display picture matches :)

  • JustThisOne

Masaru’s is going to spend the rest of the game in denial, isn’t he? :P

“We touched lips, okay? THAT’S ALL. NOTHING ELSE. J..JEEZ.”

  • Ren

Can I say I find it funny the reaction to a possibility of a gay scene? I mean, it’s funny how when it’s girl on girl it’s all in good fun but when there’s even the smallest hint of guy on guy, even if we know that since this is Japanese it’ll probably only be played as a joke, it suddenly becomes creepy. Makes it feel like it’s wrong if a game ever try to cater to my interests.

    • MellowMadman11

I hope they go all out with it, It’s not my preference but it would be nice to see something like this done in a video game. I hope they pull it off beautifully and people take notice.

  • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

which could only mean…yep he kissed Ryoma

  • Chiupon

I thought this was gonna be another generic harem thing, until they threw in the boy.

    mama likes

    • Wtv

It’s still generic harem thing….with a boy in the harem.

      Still generic harem thing, though.

      • Chiupon

the boy made it less typical, but you’re actually right.

Ah finally another Vita game i am interested in <3
my vita library is slowly growing ToIR,ToHR, Neptune PP and now this.

  • puchinri

Yes. Equal opportunity kissing for all.
Sounds kind of fun and quirky, in a serious tone. I’m even more curious.

  • Lemon

Kissing to gain powers and save the world? I’m in.
I’m liking this continuing trend of more kissing in games and anime such as Sekirei/Campione/Hyakka Ryouran/Date A Live etc these days.

  • So, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, with Horizon herself, meets Hyakka Ryouran, right?

  • Davos

Character Designs by Tony Taka very nice! :)
I’ll keep an eye on it.

  • Welp… I’m buying this.

  • Kairo Fujima

In order to save the world, you must commit date rape.

    • ShadowDivz

You havn’t been reading doujins have you? xD
      (pervert inside joke)

  • Aristides

I’ll be waiting for localization announcements ^_^

  • Sounds like a very interesting game. I’m liking the non-first person gameplay (it gives the character model a better chance to shine) and the concept is sound. I’m now just eagerly anticipating gameplay videos and further story details (and the obvious hope for localization).

Hopefully the artist collection for this game will gel as well as the two Unchained Blades games did. Until I see more characters though, I’m going to reserve final judgement on that.

  • RichyGaming

Sounds like Persona 3, where you have to use an evoker, which looks like a gun, to use your hidden potential power. (Oops, spoilers for those who haven’t played in the first 10 minutes)

  • Prinny Dood

Man im loving all the rpgs thats coming out im pretty sure it get localized probably sometime next year. But if it does get localized the devolopers will get a kiss from everyone in the world :×

  • Kai2591

    Kisses to awaken powers?

    but hmm…not convinced yet.
The premise does not attract me.
