Nope, That’s Not Shin Megami Tensei. It’s Level-5′s Demon Station

By Spencer . May 30, 2013 . 4:07pm

imageLevel-5 has a demonic RPG centered on Japan’s subway system. Demon Station features train stations in the 47 wards of Japan and tells the story about what goes on underneath the tracks.

The game starts with the train station closest to you. You are the 69th generation of Abe no Seimei, a folklore figure in Japanese mythology with is the master of Yin and Yang. This power is passed on to you when a Demon Train shows up in over 9,000 train stations. Oh, and the demon trains bring historical heroes like Nobunaga Oda, Ryoma Sakamoto, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Miyamoto Musashi to battle with.

Demon Station has Jiro Ishii (428 and Time Travelers) handling the story, Fire Emblem Awakening artist Yusuke Kozaki as the character designer, and Gravity Rush artist Takeshi Oga as the demon designer.

Demon Station is slated for release later this year on iOS and Android.

    America, Japan, or both?

    • Pedro Tavares

      Europe?

Nah its level 5 just Japan.

  • Wait what

I don’t really see what this has in common with Shin Megami Tensei outside of involving the word “demons” and being set in Japan. :/

    • SilentMC

I think it’s just that the pic used on the front page kinda looks like Raidou Kuzonoha. I don’t see much similarities outside of that.

      • Wait what

I guess. After the “Lightning Returns looks like Assassin’s Creed because it has jumping and the color white” fiasco and the “Tomb Raider looks like Uncharted” stupidity, I’m probably just too sensitive to game comparisons.

        • AkuLord3

True there are many weird ones…besides real people know Uncharted looks like Tomb Raider…but without tigers <.<

        • landlock

come on, the new tomb raider was very much like uncharted when you played it.

          • Wait what

No, it played like a modern Tomb Raider. Everything about it people said was like Uncharted was something Tomb Raider did first.

    • Morricane

It’s set in a *modern/post-apocalyptic* Japan! (hm, a medieval age Megaten would be something different…hmmmm)

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

This sounds awesome. I often think of things like this happening while riding the Subway in NY when I go to visit lol =^_^=

  • ragingmerifes

Amazing! Another cool title for the eSho… iOS and Android…
    Et tu, Level-5?

    • Magicks

The feels that I have with you as well. :’<

    • MrTyrant

      Those feels man.

    • yomachaser

      My first reaction…SWEET! more android!

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

The leads on the project are great, a shame it’s a smartphone game we’ll likely never get to play.

  • sandra10

I just looked up Takeshi’s work since I loved the concept art I saw in Gravity Rush and…

Wow, that looks great. Cautiously optimistic for a localization but I’m not expecting much.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Demons… Oga?

    http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x477/ultramonx6z/oga.jpg

Man, this sounds really interesting buuuuut it’s for phones. Well, maybe we can hope L5 pulls a reverse-Liberation Maiden and ports it to handhelds later on.

  • Shane Guidaboni

I wouldn’t have thought SMT when I saw this.

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

Ugh no why android / ios this game sounds cool

  • Xeawn

Wait, I’m confused…Abe no Seimei is a famous Onmyouji in Japanese historical mythology, making him an exorcist. In ShinMegaTen games you seek demonic pacts and power, but if you inherit Seimei’s power would you be fighting to defeat demons (a concept I find considerably more palatable)? So, that would make this the exact opposite of ShinMegaTen.

    • Solomon_Kano

They were speaking to the visuals probably, not the concept itself. Look at the preview image for the article on the front page. Kid’s kinda dressed like Raidou.

      • Xeawn

Hmm, he made me think more of that guy from Fighting Vipers :D

      • Morricane

And not to forget: modern age, Japan, demons.
Any gamer NOT thinking of Megaten first when hearing these three words? :)

  • 3PointDecoupage

Hey Square-Enix. If you want to keep making mobile games, start taking notes.

  • Pockystix

    oh, hello helltrain

  • Bloodios

Something about “over 9000″ made me giggle…

  • JustThisOne

I love trains, and I love the Raidou Kuzunoha hat. :V I’m down!

  • laurenhiya21

Aww, too bad it’s only for iOS and android… It sounds quite interesting but I don’t really like playing games on either of those >< (and I don't have either)

  • ronin4life

By “station closest to you”, do they mean the character or the player in real life?

Could this be one of those territory games for smartphones?

  • puchinri

Hah! What a fun idea. And I see Abe no Seimei is still popular to use in plenty of games (and manga, anime, etc). Really solid team there too (on the writing/art side). I’ll definitely be following this~.

I really think that L-5 are so creative, and I feel that they’re on a roll. I hope this and their other upcoming titles do well. ♥

  • Warboss Aohd

….an’ how does it work? Cause dat soundz interestin’.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594742092 Robert M Fenner

Wow! Shame about iOS but maybe something to look forward to if I get a smartphone? If it gets localized ,that is…

Too bad we didn’t get 428 or Time Travelers, I would’ve loved to play both of those.

    • DyLaN

Yeah would’ve like to see TT localized. What 428 abt again?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594742092 Robert M Fenner

It’s a murder-mystery/slice-of-life non-linear visual novel that jumps around between different people stuck in Shibuya during a blockade. It was written by the same team who did Machi for the Sega Saturn, which is widely considered to be the best visual novel ever.

        • DyLaN

Sound interesting. So I guess no translation patch of it exist?

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594742092 Robert M Fenner

Not yet. It’s PSP, Wii and PS3. PS3 fan translations are unheard of, and I hear PSP and Wii are a bit of a major pain, too.

          • DyLaN

There actually a PS3 fan translation in works. Vesperia PS3. Its the only one I know.

  • DyLaN

Yusuke Kozaki as the character designer and GR artist as the demon artist!? I’m almost sold. If its localized anyway.

  • Tonton Ramos

Yes Level-5 unleash the dangerous stuff! keep it comin!

  • http://steamcommunity.com/id/noumi_kud Kudryavka

It’s games like these that make me really jelly.
Why do I still not have a smartphone?!

    • NimbusStev

Awwww I completely glossed over that part. I’m one of the few who still has a dumbphone too. Sure hope this gets ported to something else because it sounds really interesting.

      • http://steamcommunity.com/id/noumi_kud Kudryavka

We’re missing out on -so- many games, bro.

It sucks, but one of these days we’ll join these fine ladies and gents in the smartphone market – then we’ll get stylin’ too, yo.

  • Strain42

I’d love to get this game, and I love that this is an iOS title, but my hopes aren’t very high since we didn’t get that Layton Brother’s game (yet anyways) and Layton is a name that carries some worth in the West. This is a brand new IP so unless there’s a huge outcry for it, the odds are slim…and since for some reason gamers have some weird hang-up with smart phone games, the odds of there being a huge outcry for it are even slimmer.
