Rare Isn’t Making Killer Instinct, Front Mission Evolved Developer Is

By Spencer . June 12, 2013 . 12:19am

kit While Killer Instinct is one of Rare’s creations, Rare is not developing Killer Instinct for Xbox One. Double Helix Games, the Orange County based developer behind Front Mission Evolved and the Battleship video game, is making Killer Instinct.

Rare is working on Kinect Sports Rivals for Xbox One.

We spoke with one of the creators of Killer Instinct and will have more information about the title soon.

We are truly living in dark times.

    • Altin

Well, now a company works on it that single-handedly killed a beloved Square-Franchise. Not sure whether I’m going to like it or not…

      • Testsubject909

        Well if you didn’t know.

Double Helix made fine games such as:

        G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra
        Silent Hill Homecoming
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters

        and Battleship

        to name a few…

Also, from everything I’ve heard. This will be Free to play with 1 character, the others requiring purchase.

I also heard that there might be a full retail version with everything packed in… Which you’d then need to install anyways but I digress.

Silent Hill Homecoming was awful, It’s a horror series not some action game series where you have to beat down on monsters with a combo system
Bosses in the game were near impossible to beat especially the one that requires the crowbar to kill it which is a missable weapon if you don’t explore every hole and or opening in a wall

        • Kevin Schwarz

          Good games, dude? Seriously?

          • neo_firenze

        • Altin

Well, so it’s clearly one dev that can guarantee to disappoint. Great, why not hire the guys behind Kinect Star Wars as well?

Also, 1 playable fighter? Jesus, talk about scamming the living wallet out of your…wallet.

        • Sergio Briceño

Agree, G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a fine game. A true achievement considering it was made for a movie (not necessarily “based” on it).

And now you got me wanting to watch the 90’s cartoon all over again… Shame on you!

      • pimpalicious

Front Mission was basically dead before that. Sales were horrible, 5 wasn’t localized, and SE was making a last effort to appeal to Western gamers. Evolved was just the final nail in the coffin. Which is too bad cause I liked the FM series.

        • Hossi Blumengaarten

          I loved FM4, what a shame

    • Crevox

It’s not the same Rare anymore anyways. A lot of people are long gone.

    • Tee Niitris

Fortunately there’s more to the story:

This partiular development team for Double Helix are comprived of people who worked on Skullgirls and SSF2 Turbo HD.

They are working with Rare as well as previous Killer Instinct developer Ken Lobb.

The gameplay actually looked good from what I saw. It didn’t look like good ole’ KI (and it still doesn’t), but it’s turning out to be a surprisingly good fighting game imo.

Never lose hope or give up on life by any means, thats the life I live by, you should do the same.

  • NightzeroAX

I KNEW IT. See this is when Nintendo should take back Rare.

    • Hossi Blumengaarten

Nintendo was the one that left Rare, plus the FOUNDERS of Rare had pissed of a lot of their workers because they treated them bad.

  • Tatsuya1221

Considering what i’ve heard about battleship the game(that it was worse than the movie, hard to believe), i’m glad i have never been a fan of killer instinct, though i feel bad for the fans, this is quite the punch in the gut.
That said being xbox one exclusive and a freemium game definitely doesn’t help.

    • Testsubject909

I liked the game when I was young. It’s disheartening to see it like this but I’ve already made my peace with not seeing it. This isn’t it.

This game isn’t the Killer Instinct of my childhood and from what I’ve seen… Something felt off.

Now knowing who is developing. On top of knowing which platform it is exclusively on. I have no problem and no regret in just ignoring this and letting it die.

The Killer Instinct of my memory still exists, we can still play and it’s still a wonderful tight game. This game? It’s a cash-in trying to sell on a beloved title. It is an insult to my memories and to a name that is dear to many.

It is a game. That I will never play. And quite proudly so.

  • redhood56

did you know it is a free to play game where only one character is free too! It is digital only too. YAY.

  • Microsoft apparently said that they were going to have the original team on board as consultants on the development. But then I checked Chris Seavor’s twitter (Conker’s Bad Fur Day creator, by the way) and he said that the original team is long gone. So who is this so called original team that they got on board? Unless they somehow went to the effort to track down everybody, they are lying right out of their teeth.

    • Sylveria

Lying or they found one guy from the original team who was willing to whore himself out so they could claim they had a consultant.

    • Hossi Blumengaarten

some of the original guys from RARE are still there, the guy that made Conkers voice made some videos on youtube and one of the guys that talk was his friend that still works for RARE so they couldn’t bash microsoft because he could get in trouble

  • KingGunblader

I’m absolutely not buying an Xbox One, but boy would I love a new Killer Instinct… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

    • Cameron Ward

then do research on the developer before you buy it…dont be an idiot

      • KingGunblader

I didn’t even mention the developer in my comment… don’t be an idiot.

        • Cameron Ward

i know but you are saying we have to wait and see when the writing is already on the wall. its being handled by a mediocre developer who has done nothing but make aweful movie tie in games and an aweful silent hill

  • DarthSithZero

Like I said before, This is the beginning of the annoying freemium games on consoles.

  • Oh that’s why it’s so bad.

I guess Rare is still making Minecraft skins.

    God I’m depressed.

  • ChiffonCake

I think it’s time to accept that Rare is dead, and move on…

    • Kevin Schwarz

      I think so too…sad…

  • Foxeh Shihōin

i’ve heard someof the RARE devs went on their own to do their own thing at Gory Detail Limited

  • Brimfyre

Buying Rare was probably one f the worst investments ever.

    • Testsubject909

Either that or prevented their competition from having good Rare games released.

Though this is all just theoretical hypothetical make believe scenarios here…

  • GVmanX

    Rare isn’t back, baby.

  • mikanko

From what I heard the actual team making the game are mostly new employees. So while it’s technically Double Helix, you can’t really cite their previous work as being done by the same people. That’s maybe not as bad… maybe?

  • Farid Belkacemi

“Rare is working on Kinect Sports Rivals”

    WTF Microsoft ? :o

  • Hossi Blumengaarten

GUYS, Halo Anniversary was made by 343i PLUS A TON of crap developers that helped them(SABER INTERACTIVE)
I think Rare and Microsoft will oversee what Double Helix is making so it will probably turn out good
let us wait, you guys think Microsoft will release a bad game now that a lot of gamers are angry at them?

  • Gokenhayato

killer instinct was the first game I ever played and after seeing the new one it making me cry in shame. I hope the game is better than it looks right now because it looks like trash.
