Aksys Games Moving On From Publisher To Action RPG Developer

By Ishaan . June 13, 2013 . 12:38am

Aksys Games have graduated from being a publisher to a developer. They’re working on their first co-developed game—an action RPG titled Magus.

Magus is being co-developed with the help of Black Tower using Unreal Engine 3. Black Tower are a “western studio” based in Tokyo. The company belongs to Richie Casper, who used to be the creative director of Acquire.

Here’s the story of Magus:

In a world of fire and water, an unfathomable power waits. Magus has been imprisoned in a tower in the Waterfall Kingdom and tortured for years. His crime is unknown; his history is a mystery. He remains locked up, powerless, until a new prisoner named Kinna arrives and she aids him in his escape. So begins their journey to discover Magus’s true abilities—chroma magic, his innate talent to absorb power from the colors green, red, and purple in the surrounding environment to unleash deadly attacks.  Along the way they must face the wrath of the Waterfall Kingdom and battle them to uncover Magus’s ultimate purpose.  Why has this mysterious woman decided to help him? And why now, after all this time?

Magus’ world has red, green and purple magic. You can absorb those colours to perform magical attacks such as creating tornadoes. Not all spells are attacks, purple magic gives Magus the ability to teleport and there are green spells that grow or shrink things.

Magus is in development for PlayStation 3 and slated for release this year.

  • Hey, this is gonna be interesting! The best of luck to Aksys and Black Tower.

    • $36598391

I just hope Aksys will still localize games in NA

      • I reckon it will depend on whether they can also deal with the localization workload on top of development. I can imagine them localizing the games they’ll have had their hands in though.

  • Go2hell66

well this should be interesting, can’t wait to see how this game turns out o_o

  • landlock

Interesting indeed, look foward to hearing more.

  • JustThisOne

Working the environment’s colours, you say? That sounds like a pretty interesting mechanic. This almost guarantees a colourful game – or at least one with thoughtful colour use – and I’m down with that.

    • Ereek

If this pans out the way I’m hoping it will, it might be very interesting indeed. I’m excited to see more, I, too, love the idea of thoughtful color and background use.

  • Mithfalath

So… Are they going to stick to ‘only’ developing now, given that they had already ‘graduated’?

  • Testsubject909

I’ll keep an eye open for this.

Later though. Right now. 5AM, haven’t slept LAST night. So I need sleep now.

  • Sounds like a cool concept so far. On a side note when I saw Magus, it automatically reminded me of Megus XLR XD

  • XypherCode

Sounds great! I hope it works well for them :)

  • Lemon

I’ll need to see some screenshots or maybe even a video before I can know what to expect, but all the best to them. Hope they will also still continue to publish games.

  • Don

thought it’ll be a game about magus from chrono trigger.. anyways hope it turns out well..

  • SirRichard

That sounds like a pretty cool concept, I must say, and I hope it turns out well, especially as it’s Aksys moving on up in the world and all.

  • Göran Isacson

Colors becoming power? So like a more easily accessible version of The Void? I do believe I am in for a game like that.

  • Aristides

How bout a PS4 port for launch? :P

  • Pockystix

    what, no Pink Magic?

  • Tyler Beale

If they’re developing shit now, can they please go back and fix the audio glitches in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift EXTEND (PS Vita version only)?

  • Tarlol

So happy for Aksys!! Such great people, I’ll keep an eye out for this.

  • Eric Harris

I love Aksys and hope they do a good job. I want to support them but the game will have to earn my money.

  • artemisthemp

The Logo remind me of Soul Sacrifice for some reason.
I hope we soon see some screenshot soon.
