Yeah! It’s Another Look At The Witch And The Hundred Knights

By Spencer . June 17, 2013 . 1:31am

After almost a years worth of delays, The Witch and the Hundred Knights is finally ready to launch. Details like the open world premise where you can choose to follow the rules or break them, has been removed. Instead The Witch and the Hundred Knights players like an overhead action RPG with an eccentric cast of characters.

The Witch and the Hundred Knights is slated for release on July 25 in Japan. NIS America confirmed they will bring The Witch and the Hundred Knights overseas, but have not set a date for the English version.

  • I guess an open world was too big of an order for NIS. Which isn’t a shock, 3D games are not their severe expertise.

Thankfully, that wasn’t one of my selling points. I just love NIS’s titles, and I really wanna be able to play this.

  • Hamaro

I may be extremely late to the party but I may get a PS3 just to play this.

    • Pyrotek85

There’s plenty of great games on it, not too late IMO.

    • Demeanor

You’d need like 2 lifetimes to catch up to all the awesomness XD

  • kool_cid414

The music so Nis-y I love it Want to get the game just for that although I’ll like the game too

    • Go2hell66

yea was just about to say it almost sounds like they have the same composer for all of their games

      • WyattEpp

That’s because it IS the same composer for (pretty much) all of their games. Sato Tenpei has a pretty distinctive style.

        • ZekeFreek

The only games that didn’t have Sato, I think were ZHP and Guided Fate Paradox.

  • Another look at it huh? Well, from the looks of this trailer I’ll definitely be getting it lol. The music was good, the graphics were pretty, and the battle system looked actiony and fun, and also dat Metallica =^_^=

  • WyattEpp

    So it’s NIS…making an Ys game…

Oh, I am gonna buy the HELL out of this.

  • Rockman

Not feeling the gameplay to be honest.

    • Danilo Maeda

You’re just mad Capcom canned your series.

    • puchinri

I’m a bit mixed on it myself. This game looks better than I was going to be giving it credit for (initially, anyway), but there are some parts that I wish they’d change a bit or something.

  • Crazy_O

I really like the character design. But what am I saying, I love all the games from NIS with that art direction…

    • Punny Fuzz

      Alright… Who downvoted?

  • Ladius

I’m really looking forward to this game :) Then again, that goes for almost anything developed by NIS :P

  • Sentsuizan_93

For some reason, this reminds me of the Ys games gameplay wise. Man, i’m looking forward to the release date of this.

  • Shady Shariest

    “I am the great chimney-man!”

  • Spirate

Wow; I had my hesitations at first, but I didn’t expect it to look this good. I’m pumped.

Also, who/what exactly is N.O.L.A.? I remember hearing that NIS needed some help with the 3D for this game and had to turn to one of their partners for help, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of them before.

    • puchinri

I was wondering the same thing.

    • DesmaX

Trying to search “NOLA Game Development Company” on Google just got me a team of devs from New Orleans…

So, is NIS getting Western Support?

  • Nitraion

Hmm i expect the slashing and comboing effect will be shallow or lackluster but it seems its have so much “oomph” and satisfiying like…

Multiplayer seems like fun for titie like this If they add it…
They even add witch time from bayonetta… wait what? … Hmm “Witch” time o_o i see take make sense..

  • new_tradition

I actually haven’t been paying that much attention to this title, but it looks pretty fun.

The knight/s sound so cute :3

  • TrevHead

    This looks really good.

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha oh wow, I could tell it was a NISA-game the instant I heard the intro. It’s one familiar sound, I must admit. Also, nice Bayonetta-dodging there little knight guy with an unexpectedly adorable voice.

Though when did they say they were leaving the open-world aspects behind them? Was there an interview about it or an official statement?

    • DesmaX

It was supposed to be this open-world, kinda like big WRPG. I guess it was too much for them. But they didn’t taken off features that was previously announced (Like Witch Dominations, and stuff)

    • $24431191

This is a NIS game, not a NISA game. NISA is the American branch of Nippon Ichi.

      • Göran Isacson

Aaah, right. I keep mixing those two up in my head because NISA stands on all the games I’ve bought.

  • Anime10121

    lol Quick Time Eat!

Now, as far as the game goes, this, like Legasista and Mugen Souls before it, seems like a game from NisA’s catalog that I’ll have to miss out on. Love the art, but the gameplay just doesnt look all that interesting to me, especially since they’ve taken out so much from its original premise.

  • DesmaX

… When I first looked at the trailer, I was really disappointed. Everything looked so convoluted, with all those “Great” blocking the view.

But, when I kept watching it, I realized… That it looks like a mix between Ys and Dark Souls (I mean, that circle revolving the Hundred Knights, is totally a Stamina Bar), and now I’m in love with it again.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Escha & Logy this month. Witch next month. Whoa nelly

  • ZekeFreek

It still has the undeniable Nippon Ichi feel to it. And the music is fantastic, I wonder if it’s Tenpei Sato again? Sounds like it. One thing that interests me is it’s CERO Rated C. That’s interesting because most NIS games are rated A over there. Wondering if it might get an M over here…

    • Spirate

I think it has to do with the amount of blood that’ll be in the game. IIRC, blood is considerably less tolerable in Japan as it is in America.

      • ZekeFreek

Their games have never been afraid to allude blood. Hell, blood is a plot point is Disgaea 4.

        • Spirate

Was it shown as much in Disgaea 4 as it is in this game? Also take into account that their billing this game to be considerably darker in tone than most of their other games.

          • ZekeFreek

Eh… it wasn’t really shown. My point stands that Artina essentially slitting her wrists and letting everyone drink her blood was still a thing. Even if you don’t see it in detail.

  • puchinri

I really like the character designs in this more than any of their other recent games; like, from quite a while back even. They’ve got a fun aesthetic and atmosphere set up here.

    My only problem is only playing as the knight. I want this game, but at the same time, I feel a bit unenthused. vuv;

    • Anime10121

Exactly, only having the knight to play as, makes it harder for me to connect to the game, especially since the knights look so…plain :(

      • puchinri

Yeah. The knight is adorable and all, but it’s just not as intriguing as other characters and when seeing others, it’s more sad that you can’t play as them.

    • Chiupon

At least the knight makes REALLY cute noises! I was mixed about playing as him too with all of those cool witches running about; it makes me wish it was another SPRG like Makai Kingdom; Metallica reminds me a lot of Zetta somehow hahaha

but, i’m glad they’re innovating a little. The Knight’s laugh is really cute ugh

      • puchinri

I know~! The knight is terribly adorable. But especially after seeing the other witches, I was just so devastated. Like, really, you pass up a chance to let us play as these badass witches? ;u; TTATT

That would be cool though! Maybe if the game gets a spin-off or something, we can hope to see that.

Agreed though~. This is pretty innovative for them on a few levels, and I’m excited about that. I hope some of it carries over to more projects.

        • DesmaX

Well, he is supposed to be your “mute” character (I know he makes some weird noises, but…), the type of character that makes you connect better to the actual game (In which I prefer in these JRPG’s)

          • puchinri

Having a silent protag probably does work best for this title in the end (I’m guessing), but I’m just not used to that for their games. Especially since they usually do a good job of pulling you into their characters’ stories and flushing them out (especially their leads/protags).

          • DesmaX

Not saying that can’t be done with silent protags

ZHP MC is a mute character, but I’d say he’s one of my favorites from NIS games (If not my favorite)

          • puchinri

Oh, I know. You said you prefer that, which is perfectly fair~. I’m mixed because I like both (just depends on the game and such), but again, it’s odd for me to see in their games and just not what I’d prefer personally for this title. (Or at least, not with the knight as the only PC.)

          • DesmaX

Sorry to ask, but… Ever played ZHP?

ZHP MC is more likable than most talkative MC’s, despite being mute

          • puchinri

I haven’t tried it yet. I don’t doubt that he’s quite likable though~. Chrono (Chrono Trigger) is one of my all time favorite protagonists and I love Link.

Then again, I’m also picky about my NIS protags. I like pretty much all of them, but there’s only a handful that I love (Cornet pretty much stealing the top spot, with Prier trying to tie for it).

            Here, though, I just really wanted a chance to play as some of the witches. ;u;

  • Chiupon

This feels like the first real NIS game in a loooooong time….

  • Demeanor

Are you for reals??? A Metallica Nendoroid with the LE (seems to be a smaller scale one)??? The wait for the western LE just got a bit more unbearable XD looks like another import from the US.
About the game, I absolutely LOVE the Disgaea-meets-Ys music and gameplay, although I wouldn’t mind nicer 3d models and a… larger protagonist, he’s very chibi… The witch is awesome, I wouldn’t mind being her stool ^ ^

  • MrTyrant

I cannot wait for also having the witch and the knight as cameos in newer Disgaeas D:

  • leadintea

I know NIS’ forte isn’t 3D, but these graphics are terrible! I’m loving everything else about the game though, especially the art style and aesthetics.

  • Impressive looking gameplay and a stellar sounding soundtrack. Can’t wait to play this game! And the characters look like they’ll really bring something special on top of the action-based pace of the game. Loving what’s on offer with this title!

  • ZekeFreek

The gameplay at a cursory glance actually reminds me a bit of Bastion… weird.
