Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Also Has Seven Samurai Armor Costumes

By Spencer . July 2, 2013 . 5:25pm

Catgirl cosplay, Yuna’s summoner’s dress from Final Fantasy X, and a Cloud Strife costume. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII has *a lot* of outfits for Lightning. On top of the Soldier 1st Class outfit which is a first print bonus in Japan, Lightning can also get a Samurai armor… but the piece depends on which store you purchase the game at.

Shogun (left) is a costume you get from the Square Enix store while Furinkazan (second from the right with the red text) is something you can only get from Tsutaya. Utsusemi (purple text) is probably the most common bonus since you can get that at a couple of different retailers. Flower of Battle (right) is a bonus bundled with the game’s soundtrack. Europe will receive three of these: Shobgun, Sohei Savior (gold), and Flower of Battle as part of a pre-order bonus pack.

Costumes in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII are more than cosmetic. They affect Lightning’s stats and give her different abilities. The Cloud Strife costume comes with:

Soldier 1st armor – increases damaging when you hit an enemy with specific timing

Buster Sword – lets easily knockout enemies

Soldier’s Band – increases HP

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII comes out on February 11, 2014 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America.

Hopefully every outfit will came with uniques skills… you know, to make things different. For example; with Yuna’s to be able Summoning, with Cloud’s maybe ‘Omnislash’?… we’ll see.

    • Aoshi00

Cloud’s alrdy come w/ victory pose and FF7 fanfare, so that’s a lot of value there, and it’s free :) The samurai outfits are a bit generic, like the Musou games..

      • Kaitsu

Not necessarily “free”. Since pre-ordering costs more than just buying it regularly.

        • Aoshi00

How does pre-ordering cost more than buying it regularly? In most cases you even get a discount by pre-ordering from AmiAmi or Amazon Jpn. Unless you mean wait till it is on sale in a couple of months. Otherwise pre-ordering or buying on day 1 cost you the same MSRP, this is not a limited edition that has a premium. People would’ve still pre-ordered w/o this DLC, this is a free bonus, and not a bad one at all, costume w/ additional music/pose/stat.

          • NewestType

Not only all of that but she also gets her own version of the Braver Limit. Although it is just an ability and so does not require any limit bar.

      • Crimson_Cloud

I agree that the Samurai outfits are generic and look like a palette swap with little difference here and there. I hope they won’t get to 80+ outfits with 10 of them being almost too similar…

    • Uso Ewin

A job system, III, V, and X-2 style?

  • ChiffonCake

    Hey, these actually look cool.

  • LightGenx

I look forward to playing dress up with Lightning.

    • NewestType

Yeah it’s a good thing square is publishing Saints Row 4 to make up for this fiasco. I mean dress up on female characters is stoopid.

      • Slayven19

Its so stupid that it sells, I tell ya about peoples logic these days lol. Also whats so stupid about it and what would be different than playing dress up with a guy like in saints row and other games?

        • NewestType

          Right?

That was my point exactly. When gamers are “customizing” male characters, its absolutley fine, second nature to the game even, and only improves upon it’s quality. But when character customization is attached to a female character, It’s no longer customization but dress-up. Maybe it has something to do with the typical gamer ego that is so blind to it’s own insecurities that they only feel comfortable dressing up a male and making the crotch as big as possible.

          • LightGenx

And once again people feel the need to bring this crap up again. Who cares? I personally have no problem customizing a male or female, but there is always someone who has to jump to the females defense and attack others who even dare make a joke about it.

          • Ehren Rivers

Well, there are people who care because there are others out there which genuinely believe that no matter how deep the customization system or how heavily integrated it is, a system in which a woman changes clothes is nothing more than “dress up”. I’ve seen people trying to use the ‘dress up’ argument as a reason the game will automatically be bad. Jokes are all well and good, but the line between “I’m kidding” and “I really believe this” on the internet is about a pixel wide.

Basically, when you make a joke like that you have to realize not everyone is going to know you don’t seriously look at it like that. The best you can do is tell them you were joking, so next time they won’t jump on you.

          • NewestType

Typing a joke online does not carry the same consistency as it might while talking in person; removing things like inflection, mood and sarcasm. Text on its own can often only be taken literally unless you know the mindset and, or context of the author.

I have no problem customizing male characters, but I also dont joke about them out of context. Customization is just another tool to deviate the player becoming bored with the PC. Personaly, to me, its strange that while in many games it is purely cosmetic while in LR it actually does serve a purpose. And yet in LR, it is “Dress-Up”.

I guess overall I think that the critisism should be equal and not biased to gender.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

They really are banking on the fact that EVERYONE loves Lightning huh?

    • LightGenx

Are you saying they don’t? *can’t comprehend*

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

N-No of course not! Everyone loves Lightning®

      • Guest

        See what you did there…

      • Godmars

I see what you did there…

    • Nameless App 1989

At least they don’t bank on Tifa. And if so, not much.

      • Slayven19

What’s wrong with banking on Tifa?

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

    Getting four of those

  • GHAmer

This game title should be Final Fantasy XIII-3: Cosplay Party. LOL

    • LightGenx

      Panty shots.. Panty shots everywhere.

      • TheExile285

        Works for me!

      • MrTyrant

Armpits, you know that fans like that.

      • ShadowDivz

What im hearing is “Lightning is my waifu” DLC bundle.

        • Superior Spider-Man

They had the “Serah is my waifu” pack they might as well.

    • Atmey

I usually don’t mind these things as extra content, but I am guessing this kind of content is pushing away anyone who is not into it, I mean if it was hidden and not announced some people wouldn’t be pushed away.

  • rurifan

I lost all enthusiasm for this game when they announced there won’t be a Japanese voice / English text version. Normally square released FF13 that way in china.

    https://asia.playstation.com/sg/en/newsdetail?id=562

    Lame. :-(

    • DrakeClawfang

News flash – they’ve never done that. Stupid to complain now.

      • Firekitty

You are incorrect. Squeenix almost never does dual audio, but since FFXIII, it’s become normal for them to release three Asian versions; a straight-up port of the Japanese game, ditto the English version, and one with Japanese voices and subs/menus in Chinese, English and Korean.

They do this with pretty much every game, now.

        • DrakeClawfang

Oh, in asia, alright. I’m unfamiliar with their policy in Asian countries, I’m just familiar with Europe and NA.

    • Aoshi00

The Eng. dub has been pretty exceptional.. if you want the Jpn dub why not import the Jpn ver? I’m getting Jpn ver on PS3 and Eng ver on 360, just like I did for 13 & 13-2.. the fully localized Chinese text for the Hong Kong version is pretty cool though.. I kinda want to replay Steins;Gate in Chinese too :)..

    • Firekitty

The Chinese/English/Korean subbed version is usually released at the same time as the North American version, since that’s where the translation comes from. Unless Squeenix specifically announces that there won’t be one, it’s pretty safe to assume we’ll be seeing it in February.

      • rurifan

The difference is the Chinese version is being released simultaneously with the Japanese release this time. :(

    • James Williams

What’s wrong with the dub? it’s great!

  • Ooh Bee

They ever gonna talk about anything besides the costumes? Geez.

    • Slayven19

They’ve talked about other things before the costume system. The one thing I don’t want is story spoilers.

  • Aqua King

I was fearful of store specific DLC as they did in XIII-2 :(

I have no issue with this as long as all DLC will be added to the store. I’m not a fan of missing out on something, or feeling I need to purchase one game multiple times from different retailers. :/

    • Aoshi00

I think eventually they would end up on PSN or XBL.. I remember the weapon/costume DLC from Lawson pre-order or the one you buy a CD single for ended up being available later for purchase.. most Best Buy / Gamestop exclusive pre-order DLCs are usually available later too..

  • Masa

FFXIII ending was great and ended perfectly, was pretty emotional too, xD.
Then along came XIII-2 which was awful and now they release XIII-3 which looks even worse……WHY!

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

FFXIII’s ending was so short there couldn’t be anything more that hinted to an ending. FFXIII was better, plus, nothing really does happen in FFXIII. its all the set-up for something much more.

    • Detrimont

while i agree with you on the first 2 points, i think LR will actually be good, and hopefully it fix what they did with the first sequel

  • Warboss Aohd

an’ here i thought it woz gonna be a reference to ’7 Samurai’

    i am disappoint.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      lol me too

    • Solomon_Kano

A Kikuchiyo costume would’ve been sick.

Not gonna lie. Looking forward to playing dress up with Lightning lol :3

  • Solomon_Kano

    I like.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

I like flower one so I’m glad we get that in Europe/UK. I will wait for my local retailers to update site before pre-ordering.

I really did wish we’d get them all. But, hey… better than getting none.

I think I’m going to like this game – for the customisation aspects at least, for now.

  • Gilgamesh2025

    Yay, Samurai Lightning! :D

  • Keima88

    Ah.

    What about a kunoichi costume?

*imagines Lightning in fishstockings with a sakura white motive garb*

I dont think my heart can take that…

  • XiaomuArisu

    So Lightning is a Cosplayer?
Looks like she is not so serious after allXD

  • artemisthemp
