Meet Cid And Your Other Allies In Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

By Ishaan . July 15, 2013 . 1:50pm

Square Enix have shared a list of key allies in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn—NPCs that will aid you in your quest. There appear to be two kinds so far: the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and Garlond Ironworks. Cid is the only member of the latter group that has been revealed so far, but here are the Scions:

Minfilia:

A woman whose gentle eyes and caring demeanor conceal a steely determination. Amidst the chaos that reigns in the wake of the Calamity, Minfilia seeks to find a hero who will help to usher in an era of enduring peace. She is said to harbor a keen interest in preternatural phenomena.

Thancred:

A self-professed bard and chaser of dreams, often seen wandering the wilds of Thanalan. Ever the charmer, Thancred never misses an opportunity to woo a lovely lady with verses of adulation. This foppish facade, however, conceals many secrets, not the least of which is his puissant skill with a dagger.

Yda:

A young woman with the skills of a pugilist, Yda is always seen with her companion, Papalymo, as they go about their enigmatic business in the verdant Black Shroud. Though appearing carefree and almost flippant at times, the depth of her focus is revealed in battle, where she stands ever ready to protect her comrades.

Papalymo:

This Lalafellin youth wields the powers of a thaumaturge, and is highly knowledgeable in the field of aether. Papalymo’s childlike features, typical of his race, bely a biting cynicism that often puts him at odds with the perpetually cheerful Yda, the companion with whom he roves the Black Shroud.

Y’shtola:

This beautiful and enigmatic Miqo’te is often seen wandering the lands of La Noscea. Her mastery of the arcane arts and conversance with ancient tongues mark her as far more than a simple traveler.

Louisoix:

The wise and wizened former leader of the Circle of Knowing, a fellowship of learned individuals hailing from the far-northern island nation of Sharlayan. In seeking to forestall the calamitous arrival of the Seventh Umbral Era, Louisoix invoked the power of the Twelve, Eorzea’s pantheon of guardian deities. Alas, he disappeared amidst a blinding light following the ritual, and has not been seen or heard from since.

Urianger:

An Elezen sage and scholar of prophetic teachings, Urianger was one of the first to draw the attention of Eorzeans to the peril of the Seventh Umbral Era. Formerly of the Circle of Knowing, he is infamous among adventures for the guidance he proffers via his cryptic utterances.

Alphinaud & Alisaie:

A self-assured young man and his strong-willed twin sister, recently come to Eorzea in pursuit of an unknown agenda. In spite of their tender years, the two carry themselves with an air of unwavering purpose.

And finally, Cid, from the Garlond Ironworks:

A brilliant magitek engineer, Cid nan Garlond defected from his native Garlemald and came to Eorzea, where he founded the ironworks of his namesake. He now shares his knowledge with the people of his adoptive homeland, that they might defy the imperial menace he once served.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is slated for release this August on PC and PlayStation 3.

  • Ereek

Papalymo was definitely my favorite from beta. Really, though, all of them I’ve met are pretty damn likeable characters. Maybe not as memorable (yet) as Prishe/Shantotto/Aphmau, but there’s still a lot of story to see.

    • Jonah Paley

Thancred’s my favorite Archon by far.

  • MitsuiLiam

Will this game be available on Mac?

  • Christopher Nunes

I’m liking Y’shtola the most so far but the others are interesting, I never really played FFXI but I did like Prishe and Shantotto from what I’ve seen in videos and Dissidia.

I can’t wait to play this game!

    • Jonah Paley

I played FFXI, and let me tell you, Prishe is awesome. She dropkicked a frikkin god.

      • Christopher Nunes

Damn… sometimes I wish you could romance NPCs at times in an MMO. Prishe sounds SO awesome and I really liked her in Dissidia, actually she’s become one of my favorite FF characters!

I would be cool if SE made a special game event where some of the FFXI characters get rifted into the world of FFXIV and it’s your job to get them back home with them fighting alongside you. That would be epic!

And it could have Prishe dropkick Bahamut or whatever powerful god in the face to return home as the final battle/scenes.

    • whatinthewolrd

Shantotto was the most evil taru in the game. When I stopped playing FFXI I realized I would never get to see her again :( Best character in the game hands down.

      • Christopher Nunes

Man… she’s memorable no doubt as in Dissidia I quite liked her rhyming speaking manners.

It’s a shame… I found FFXI so SLOW when you walked around and fought I couldn’t really get into it. I don’t mind the slow pace at times, but this fault too slow in my opinion and I like to travel quick.

If the characters were a little bit faster I wouldn’t have mind and probably kept on playing on the 360 version when I could but the whole log-in screen and menus to play FFXI was annoying at times.

  • DanteJones

Y’shtola! Pretty much the main reason I started off at Limsa Lominsa. Interesting though, I don’t remember ever running into Minfilia or seeing her in any of the cutscenes so far.

    • Ereek

You probably didn’t get far enough in the storyline, Minfilia is a huge part after a certain point.

      • DanteJones

Ahh alright. I pretty much had to stop myself after the first dungeon you can go to, which was level 15/16-ish? Looking forward to seeing the other characters down the road. :)

        • Jonah Paley

Yeah, Minfilia is in the missions after the third dungeon. If you stopped at the first dungeon, you didn’t see her.

Interesting 1.0 tidbit: The initial missions in 1.0, the ones that were different depending on which city-state you started at, mostly took place 10 years before the game began, but a lot of people didn’t realize that since the Echo wasn’t introduced till after the city-state missions were done. Remember Ascilia from the Ul’dah missions? According to Fernehalwes, FFXIV’s official Loremaster, she grew up to be, 10 years later…Minfilia. They’re the same person.

    • Aunna Terrell

Like Jonah said, you don’t get to see Minfilia till after you finished the first three dungeons (Sastasha, Tam-Tara, and Copperbell Mines) after becoming an envoy around level 15.

  • Jonah Paley

I think Cid looked better without the beard.

    • shuyai

lol 3 dislike, some people here must have beard fetish

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

To me, he looks more Badass with it.

      • Jonah Paley

Maybe so, Brofessor, but I still prefer his 1.0 look.

    • NRool

I like the beard, but the hair … the Barnaby Brooks-esque mop doesn’t suit somebody who looks like this Cid, he just looks odd to me

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

During the beta I meet them all, except for Cid, and they are all wonderful characters. Minfilia, Y’shtola, and Yda are my favorites. Oh how I wish to see Yda’s face though lol =^_^=

    • Ferrick

you met with Louisoix ? =o

      • Jonah Paley

Nah, Louisoix isn’t in the beta. I think he’s dead for good, as is Nael von Darnus…but then again, both were listed as major characters on the SE website…maybe so that new players would know who they were? Not sure how Louisoix could survive a Megaflare to the face, or avoid being hit by it, seeing as there’s no sign he transported himself to the Rift with the 1.0 players. So I’m gonna assume he was disintegrated.

        • Aunna Terrell

Thancred mentioned him in a cutscene for Ul’dah… So it’s still best to know who he is… Since you’ll probably see him in the Echo flashbacks.

      • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

No, I forgot a bout him. Like Jonah said, he wasn’t in the Beta lol =P

  • riceisnice

There’s no Major Roegadyn npc yet.

    • Jonah Paley

Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn is a female Roegadyn NPC, and is pretty damn major, seeing as she’s the Admiral in charge of the city-state of Limsa Lominsa.

Mind you, I went through all of 1.0 without realizing that she was a Roegadyn. But yeah, Merlwyb, Raubahn, and Kan-E-Senna all return in A Realm Reborn.

      • Ereek

Merlwyb is great, I love her.

I actually didn’t realize she was a FemRoe at first, either.

        • Time Sage

To be fair, she was the FIRST FemRoe. She was added later as part of the 7th umbrel era storyline when plans for 2.0 were already underway

      • riceisnice

Oh gosh, she’s a Roegadyn? You learn something new everyday.

        • AnimusVox

Yeah, I guess a lot of people thought she was an Elezen at first.

  • http://www.therealgamers.net/ Matt Clarmont

    It’s Basch.

    • Ferrick

      don’t listen to ondore’s lies!

  • leadintea

    Cid is a sexy beast!

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

That Cid is awesome! It´s like VII, III and X Cids fused! Wish that was XV Cid.

  • AnimusVox

    Those twins…are so…pretty…
    And I love Cid’s beard.

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

I knew those twins were going to be involved, somehow!

      • AnimusVox

I never got to play the standard XIV, were they in that one also?

        • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

Never played the original, I couldn’t tell you.

    • Firekitty

I can’t tell which one is supposed to be the guy @_@. well played, SE.

      • AnimusVox

Haha I think he’s the one on the right, since he (I think) is taller.

  • Mordina

So if you play as a female will the dialogue with Thancred be different as he seem to be a charmer? Just curious.

    • Ereek

He flirted a bit, but nothing particularly obvious. It was subtle enough that it might not even be counted as flirting. I’m not sure if it’s different than male dialogue.

FFXI had differing dialogue for some classes during certain scenes (eg going to the Corsair class quest as a Blue Mage), so I wouldn’t put it past them to have slightly different dialogue in some cases.

      • Time Sage

I’m pretty sure he was flirting with my Mancat at one point. The theroy from my beta server was that he was bi.

        • Firekitty

          Everyone’s bi for mancats.

      • Mordina

        I see. Thank you!

  • komiko12

So in case the next crossover game from Square Enix comes, who will be your pick as representative for FFXIV?

    Mine is Y’shtola :D

    • Jonah Paley

Thancred and his handy little daggers versus Gaius von Baelsar would be my Dissidia 3 picks.

  • Luke Blackwood

Man, that Minfilla girl sure is hawt :D

Square, stop spamming us with Lightning and give us more Minfilla xD

  • Byron Kerrison II

I’m sorry but as soon as I saw the twins, my mind immediately went “.hack//”

    Yda – Pi
    Minfilia – Atoli
    Urianger – Endrance
    Louisoix – Yata
    Alphinaud & Alisaie – Sakubo
    Cid – Ovan
    Thancred – Haseo

  • Hours

This is probably my favorite Cid design ever. It’s nice to have a beefy, sexy Cid.

The online Final Fantasy games always have the best Cids.

  • Gilgamesh2025

Not bad! ;D Looking forward to playing the game! Can’t wait! :)

  • Alestaos

Just thought those twins look like to be carrying a bookish weapon by there side. Wonder if that means there from the arcanist class line (SMN/SCH)
