It now makes me think that this game should encourage speedrunning.

  • dragoon_slayer12

And I thought Moon Diver would be the only way for me to get my strider fix. I’m psyched for the os4 version. In a risk of being warned again, I don’t see how Capcom couldn’t/wouldn’t do a Vita version, game play like this is best on the go

  • Solomon_Kano

I’d be the first to say something bad about Double Helix, but this actually looks pretty fantastic.

  • DesmaX

Yeah, it’s the Strider I remember, alright

    Day 1 for me

    • Godmars

No. Old Strider couldn’t take so many hits, nor was there so many casual hits. Enemies weren’t as standard either.

      • DesmaX

Well, I was a kid back there. I remember playing like that (Didn’t go too far, of course)

      • TrevHead

Yeah the original strider (never played Strider 2) was very much an arcade game were you died alot until you learned the little tricks to overcome obstacles rather than rely just on twitch skills.

I guess it’s a little unrealistic to expect the same from an modern console game but I do hope there’s some good boss fights in there. Game sure looks fast and fluid though which is fantastic!

        • SageShinigami

For what its worth, arcade games were designed to be unfairly difficult in order to get players to use more quarters.

THAT SAID. Yeah this game looks too freaking easy.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

Yep. Capcom you got a bite on your hook here. Never played the old ones though so this is nice.

  • Richard N

Digging the Command Mission style scarf.

  • Ni

the game is looking awesome so far

  • WyattEpp

Hmm… For a primarily melee-oriented game, it seems very strange to me that almost all of the enemies have guns. More, they use them constantly. There’s a lot of firing from offscreen, which is not an encouraging thing.

I counted only a couple enemies near the end that took more than one hit, which feels like they were using popcorn to make it feel faster and bigger than it is. I think the level design is made to support a faster-paced and faster-moving game. In particular it’s remarkably flat for the level of mobility you expect from Strider, but the movement is too slow to support it. In the case of Osman, there’s more verticality and varied enemy types to break things up a bit. IIRC, Moon Diver has oddly-shaped arenas and chaining as its primary features. And I’m not even getting into the mechanics of the life bar….

TL;DR: We’ll see, but I’m seeing a number of issues that raise my design hackles.

    • Erikdayo

It looks like a run & gun. Only without the gunning since Strider is mainly melee… Kinda weird…

  • zaidandzhadow

that could easily been a Megaman/Zero gme

    • Vesperion

I could agree, but Strider deserves a new game

    • ZEROthefirst

Zero actually finished off well, please don’t encourage Capcom to do to the Zero series what they did to the X (you know what I mean making X6 after it was supposed to end at 5). If any MM game give us ZX3 or Legends 3.

But like Vesperion said, Strider deserves a new game. It’s been 13 years since the last Strider game on the PS1, and I for one and extremely happy for it :D

      • anthony apduhan

If I was at Capcom I could make a timeline for the Megaman X series MMX5 ending will start Megaman Zero. MMX6 to MMX8 will start a new Megaman series… Megaman Axl. X9 and X10 will conclude the entire series peacefully and live happily ever after forever with no more Mavericks.

I dunno I just want Megaman X9 and X10 only.

        • ZEROthefirst

I want X9 and 10 or just 9 (whichever would end the series) just to truly end the series off. I want them to go into the elf wars that obviously happened sometime between the X series and the Zero series. Since Zero wakes back up and gets his real body stolen by Omega, etc. etc.

        • zaidandzhadow

I don’t really think that X6 could fit with X7 and X8, i see it more like it could be added to the X5 story.

    • Kaihedgie

Mega Man Zero has officially concluded, so no more games.

      • zaidandzhadow

I think we all here know that MMZ saga ended, but gameplaywise and given the hunger for any, and i mean any glimpse of megaman or megaman related to any game, that would have been an “option”.

  • DriftSlave

It looks really Smooth….It really has some nostalgia of Strider 2 in there…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Its everything and the toaster. What the heck? No Wii U release!? But… but Strider…. the NES… ah.

    • ZEROthefirst

B-but Strider1+2 on the PS1… lol just kidding. I hope they release the game on the WiiU sometime in the future though, it would be disappointing if they didn’t do it on all major consoles (especially since they’re even doing this for the Xbone).

  • ZEROthefirst

After years of no Strider game since Strider 2 I was pretty sure it was over… then this came along! Gameplay it looks a lot like Strider 2 for the PS1, and graphics don’t really matter to me in games but this looks pretty good. Only thing I’m hoping for is that there’s going more than 6 stages total and each mission will take longer than maybe 10 minutes… Strider 2 is great, but that ridiculously short playtime still gets to me.

    • Solomon_Kano

You won’t have to worry about the number of stages. They said it’s an interconnected world, so there aren’t stages at all, actually.

  • Aoshi00

Castle of Illusion + Strider, 2.5D side scroller FTW :) I still remember the robot gorillas and centipede made of communist soldiers. This looks good, love the rearranged soundtrack too.

  • anthony apduhan

Now would be a good time for MVC4…

    • jordanbobordan

It is still way too soon, check the time between 2 and 3, it took that long for a reason

      • anthony apduhan

Well check the time for the first game and the second game… I’m sure it won’t be that long besides…

        PS1 = MVC1

        PS2 = MVC2

        PS3 = U/MVC3

        PS4 = MVC4

See any connections even though they are on other consoles? It’s not like they will gonna pull a KH3 on PS4 again… I’m sure I’ll wait between 2014-2018…

        • jordanbobordan

You do realize that Street Fighter 4 came out 5 years ago and it is still getting big updates. Capcom is treating each of their games as a platform, not a finished package. They actually just announced that they are only just about to get started with supporting MVC3. I wouldn’t expect MVC4 until atleast 2016, if not later.

  • If this game was anything like the original strider, the player would have been dead before setting foot in an indoor environment!

Having said that, the game does look smooth but level design seems a bit out there right now. It is just a demo so things are likely to change but I just don’t know what they’re trying to go for. It seems like a linear platformer but it also looks kinda metroidvania like as well…

  • ChiffonCake

Hm… reminds me of the Bionic Commando remake from a while back.

  • Fidelis

Only watched like 3 minutes of it..but what bothers me is the fact that it seems he’s not trying to dodge enemy attacks.
He’s just running straight through the bullets and it doesn’t seem like that’s doing much bad for him.

    • Mar Mar

He should have been dead already.

    • Bullet sponge bullshit.

    • JustThisOne

It looks like the player tries harder to avoid stuff later on. Just skip somewhere in the middle, where he does more jump attacks and so on.

    • Kaitsu

If you paid close attention much later on in the video, he actually takes a shit load of damage from just the bullet hell that went straight at him and actually starts avoiding enemy attacks after that.

Just think of this way. It drops you into the game so you get to know more about how to attack, instead of just dying straight away from the first guy you see. Then it gives you all these easy to access upgrades which essentially helps you do all these cool things like deflecting bullets. And then all of a sudden later on the level you just start taking crap loads of damage, which forces you to use all these upgrades to live. To me, it looked like a very good tutorial level, but without it being “tutorial mode”. That’s great game design, IMO.

  • Syed Sameer Rahman

I remember playing this back on Sega and the PS1…never heard of Strider after that, until today :D

  • im hoping they add a bit more color but im quite impressed, seems like double helix realizes this might be their only chance to impress the game audience

  • notforsale

Add Lunatic difficulty like in touhou and this will become a hardcore game

  • mikanko

Not really liking how easily Strider shrugs off getting hit by blaster rifles. Seems getting shot should carry some more weight to it.

I guess focus groups decided that people don’t want the stress of playing a game where you would want to avoid getting hit. =/

    • Hollowkoopa

Strider 2 was a lot like this. Bullets pass through you like nothing.

      • BlueTree

Strider 2 was an arcade with a score and ranking system to make it so that people couldn’t do the equivalent of getting Cs and Ds in school then going “Man this is just too easy and not challenging at all.” Its patterns were also much more deliberate, as the Cipher was not used to deflect shots, even with boost IIRC.

Although they may do that here, I do think the way Strider is getting shot and the patterns of fire they use don’t really seem like they’d be more enjoyable if you ramped up the difficulty. But we don’t have the game yet, so time will tell!

  • SpecDotSign

Looks, good, but super repetitive. Also, Double Helix, womp womp.

  • hadjimurad

needs more detail in the art/design of environments/backgrounds. gets hit by way too many bullets without effect. but looks fast and smooth, and glad for the franchise and the 2d-ish action

  • tubers

Just watched it on my vita.. just perfect.

  • Erwin MadJelly

It’s been long since I saw another Strider Game.. As always, looking forward to this one :D

  • almostautumn

Really digging this a lot more than that 12 second trailer. Shows off the same speed-weirdness, like he’s supposed to be going X speed but isn’t, but still; looks awesome!
Favorite thing about this is that it reminds me of being a kid, and how dope I thought Strider 2 was. Makes me take all the things I love, like Capcom action games, Samurai Champloo, Suda 51 and of course Ninjas, as in Strider and Shinobi (PS2)— and just melt. Melt and melt into all the kickass stuff I really wish I lived in <3

  • fairysun

This is Capcom’s Ryu Hayabusa !

  • SauriansMaster!!

They could improve this game so much by providing a greater field of view so it would be possible for the player to plan ahead and dodge incoming fire.

  • this game looks pretty button mashy…i know it isnt the final version, but something about it seems pretty unappealing.

  • JustThisOne

It gets a little too glowy at times, but otherwise, I’d say it’s on the right track. A couple of things I’m iffy on, but I’m sure there will be more to see. Maybe things will be different by the end?

  • Hector Velar

awesome. back to the old school!:D
