Buy Pikmin 3, Get A Discount On The Wonderful 101 In Europe

By Ishaan . July 22, 2013 . 10:10am

Nintendo are using Pikmin 3 to push The Wonderful 101 in Europe—specifically, the download versions of both games on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.

Pikmin 3 is slated for release on July 26th for €49.99/£39.99, and buying that game will get you a 30% discount on The Wonderful 101 when it releases on August 23rd.

Note that you’ll only be able to avail the discount if you purchase Pikmin 3 between July 26th and September 21st. Additionally, you’ll need to buy The Wonderful 101 before September 21st as well, to avail the discount.

Update: There was an error regarding the release date of The Wonderful 101 in a previous version of this report. It has been corrected.

I really hope this deal comes to the US as well. I was already planning on grabbing both games. Would prefer if it somehow applied to retail copies but I’ll settle for a download.

This is kind of uninspired. In Europe, download versions are generally much more expensive than retail one, especially if those are sold in UK stores (for example, Pikmin 3 can be preordered for £32, and same for TW101, whereas the eShop version is £40). So the overall saving is not much. Depending on the store, you are still paying less with the retail versions.

If it were like the SMT4+FE deal, where you get the $30 credit even if you register the retail versions, it would have been much more interesting. But if you have to get the digital versions of both, I don’t see an advantage.

Also, forcing you to buy the second game absolutely on launch day is kind of ridiculous. Can’t they give you a week or so? What if I’m not home that day?

Those are pre-order deals. With potential shipping costs.

And then you add the digital deluxe promotion on top of that.

Shipping from UK stores is almost always free, even to other european countries. Also, I have a Basic Wii U, not a Premium one :P but even with the deluxe promotion, the price would be about the same.

Overall, it’s just not that great an offer. I’m sure they can do better. Like I said, the SMT+FE one was a lot more tempting to buyers, since it was also much more flexible (ie. you got the credit even for buying cheaper retail versions).

    • Actually, that was a mistake on my part, which I’ve corrected. TW101 is out on August 23rd, so you have about a month to buy it.

What a craptacular deal, Awakening + SMT4 $30 deal this is not. You could buy both these games from online retailers for much cheaper than this deal, and that includes shipping.

Why anyone ever buys their games from the online European store is beyond me. That goes for the Xbox & PSN stores aswell, horrendous prices.

I like this. It seems Nintendo’s pretty serious about helping out niche titles, what with this deal and the one for buying SMT4 and FE:A.

It’s kind of brilliant, actually. They’re basically using the titles that are guaranteed to sell to promote the ones that aren’t. It also helps that the games they pair up are similar or appeal to pretty much the same market, essentially telling the customer: “If you like this game, then why not give this one a try as well? We’ll even reward you for doing so!”

It would be more brilliant if it worked with the retail version too (and it’s not like it would be difficult, they could use the Nintendo Club code). I don’t think many people will buy the download version of Pikmin, since it’s more expensive than the retail one (unlike Japan, there’s no discount for the digital version).

If you won a Deluxe Wii U, would that 10% stack with the 30%? If so (of course in Japan) that would be pretty sweet.
Hoping to get a Wii U soon, just got a job. Hopefully I can preorder Wonderful 101 as well. I really want to support it.

  • KrazyBean

LOL. I can pre-order Pikmin 3 from GAME for £35 and get a sweet free key ring to boot…I can also get TW101 for about £32 as well. Not to mention that I’ll get the game a day earlier when I pre-order it.

    This deal kinda sucks…
