I nearly got excited when I saw “Dragon Quest X drops.” Then I realized it’s a price drop for Japan and not a western localization announcement. Wonderful. :|

  • Suicunesol

Really a shame that DQX didn’t end up being a system seller for Wii U. Dragon Quest is supposed to be huge, and to have an exclusive numbered title on Wii U so early should have given it at least some kind of edge. But I feel like, given recent numbers, DQX on Wii U practically doesn’t even exist.

I guess it’s the fact that it’s a subscription-based MMO that’s causing the most problems.

    • Hatsoon Mike

Or because it’s also available on Wii

      • Suicunesol

I dunno… I thought many people might want to play the better, HD version for Wii U. It’s Dragon Quest. There are diehard DQ fans out there. I guess I underestimated them.

        • malek86

I’m pretty sure that MMO players are some of the people who care less about graphics in the entire planet.

But it doesn’t seem like DQX did particularly high numbers on Wii either, although I’d like to know the active userbase before saying that. But it just doesn’t sound like this will be as successful as FF11 was for them.

          • Draparde

At the very least, according to http://www.siliconera.com/2012/09/27/dragon-quest-x-has-300000-subscribers-so-far/

            it started off well lol.

I have to wonder how much higher it would be if it where worldwide like XI (and XIV) probably not too much higher says the pessimist in me.

          • malek86

Well the starting numbers are one thing, but we don’t know how many users have remained active. That’s what I’m wondering.

          • Draparde

Indeed, i’m actually interested in those numbers myself.

i’m not sure if the game gets new content very often or not either.
(but i don’t really keep up with it so i wouldn’t be surprised if it did)

          • $36598391

Yea, I still play Ultima Online

    • Godmars

Yeah, a $70 game which needs paid subscription is likely going to make anyone think twice.

There is just something wholly wrong with Square’s business mindset this gen. With or without Wada if its taken them this long, and the PC release, to make someone think about dropping the price.

  • Randy Marsh

    *sigh* Move along everyone….

  • Warukyure

I don’t understand Square-Enix’s logic with how they handle this. Taking a flagship series and using its name for an MMO. And even worse, making it a numbered entry in the series.

On one hand, I can see that they want to use the name to help push sales and stuff, but on the other, you’re just hurting the series’ reputation.

And so far with 2 entries, none of them are proving to be major system sellers or have done any good for the series. (I played FFXI, while unique, they should have just named it ‘Final Fantasy Online’)

Naming this one Dragon Quest X may have done more harm than good, seeing as Dragon Quest isn’t as internationally recognized compared to Final Fantasy.

    • malek86

Actually, Wada went on record to say that FF11 has been the most profitable game in the series.

      • chibidw

Well yeah, a game that keeps paying them long after the game is first paid for tends to do that.

        • malek86

Regardless of the reason, it shows that FF11 has been much more successful than people give it credit for. Although it doesn’t look like FF14 will be the same.

    • whatinthewolrd

FFXI > Half of the series. The story is deep and hours long. You cant hate on P2P MMOs just because you don’t like them.

As for DQX… I have never liked the series so I have no input.

      • Warukyure

Never said I hated P2P or this game. I actually played 11 for awhile

I was just saying that using a number from series on an experiment like an MMO was a waste.

Its like saying instead of calling it World of Warcraft, its now Warcraft 4

        • Ferrick

technically its still matches the whole “Crystal is our life” lore that’s placed throughout most Final fantasy-s (with some exceptions), so its named as a numbered series

and WoW is technically Warcraft 4

          • KnifeAndFork

So did Final Fantasy Legend which was not a main FF…

          • Ferrick

SaGa doesn’t have any crystals as part of its lore… its not even originally an ff game to begin with…

        • Jeremy Barnes

Does it really matter that much?

          • whatinthewolrd

No, which is why its so dumb to get bugged out at FF11 having an 11 on it lol

      • KnifeAndFork

        . That’s obviously your opinion.
Other’s opinion are that it is a money sponge timesink boring lorefest with no classic ATB turn based party gameplay and no cinematic storytelling and blank slate mute main characters that don’t contribute to the story..NO THANKS

        • Ferrick

that’s obviously an opinion from someone who doesn’t know anything about the game, “Blank slate mute main characters that don’t contribute to the story” ? far from it, you ARE one of the biggest contributor to the story of each arcs, or are you saying that destroying world-destroying bosses single handedly (if you go solo) doesn’t count as “contribution”

        • whatinthewolrd

Good lord, you obviously never played RPGS or MMOs pre 2003. Why all the ignorance spreading like STDs nowadays online. I cant at all these GP people on the internet now.

    • Enzo

Still not as bad as Breath of Fire 6.

    • Sango

Not a really a big deal making it into an mmo seeing as how popular DQ is in japan. Its not like they completely abandon the rpg side and said we’re stick to mmos now. The can easily make DQ 11 rpg w/o any problem. And how has it done harm? DQ is still SE most popular franchise as far as Japan goes and always sells well. You make it sound as if DQ is in the position as FF.

  • Pockystix

I’m really hoping Dragon Quest isn’t the next target for decline. They’ve really screwed the pooch with Final Fantasy, and with all this negativity surrounding their MMO, Browser game, and lack of localizations. . . it just scares me to think of a world where the companies ‘better half’ is no more. . .

  • Judgephoenix

I am honestly not surprised I am not to sure what the budget was for this game compared to FF14 but Square focus just seems to be somewhere else at the moment. I mean WiiU sales are still kind of low and that game was released in between Wii ending and WiiU release. At this point there are other rpgs from other companies that are coming out I will buy from them instead. I just hope KH3 and FF15 does not suffer resource issues since they had to pause work on them due to FF14….

  • Until I see the 2 words I want to see, I don’t care about Dragon Quest. Btw, those 2 words are: Western Release.

    • HerokÔÖ×

So you do care about Dragon Quest, you just are saying to you nothing expect a western release matters because if you don’t care then a western release means nothing to you.

      • …could you repeat that? I didn’t quite understand. I do love the Dragon Quest series, but as long as it stays in Japan, I’ll be annoyed by the series at the same time. I want the DQVII remake and Terry’s Wonderland 3D and DQX. So until we see them in the West, I’ll be stubborn and say I don’t care when really I do.

  • drios07

Here are my two cents. Turn it back to a regular jrpg, drop the price to 60 bucks and bask in the glory while I get to play dq 10. Got that sqaure enix?

  • $36598391

Square Enix is just using every game series they can to make money
Japan gets the NES/SNES versions of the first three Dragon Quest games on a Wii disc, Does NA get anything, nope, we didn’t even get the NES versions on the Wii Virtual Console…

  • Randgriz

Was it really a good idea to include the US price conversion in the headline of a game not even released in the west? Its a little misleading, why not “Dragon Quest X Price drop in Japan”

    • Eefara

Most people realize that they’re talking about a Japan price drop. Plus, the article was tagged “Japan” above the title.

      • Randgriz

Not on the main page.. #nohatin’justfriendlydebatin’

  • KnifeAndFork

Online RPGs should always be cheaper than normal games as an incentive for people to buy them since they are subscription based. One free month too.

Of course this game is never coming over here so whatever.

Hopefully the next DQ game goes back to normal gameplay
