  • O_O Master Clueless

So taking wonder yellow is hammer

    • The racial stereotypes in this game are amazing. Up there with Punch-Out.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

The combat diversity in this game is nuts

    • neogeno

Welcome to Hideki Kamiyas dev style.

  • z_merquise

Can’t watch it now but damn, the pic with Kamiya in a suit imitating Satoru Iwata looked so hilarious.

Okay, after watching it, I gotta say that the game is so damn epic! Platinum sure knows how to make the action so impressive.

  • Kamiya is the man
story looks like it’ll be epic cant wait, i think ill be going mostly with pink and yellow
oh screw it i’ll use them all they are all too awesome

  • James Beatty

The game looks Wonderful. I hope the game sells well so more people get the chance to play it. I can’t say I liked the voice over for Kamiya in the direct though, but the game trailer looked fantastic, if not a bit spoiler-y

  • raitouniverse

Apparently the trailer at the end wasn’t all that spoilery (according to people inside at pg). That alone is intriguing for me, because it was a fun watch.

  • riceisnice

Didn’t they say something about a surprise announcement at the end of the presentation?

  • Why do I keep hearing LittleKuriboh as the announcer in the game? I mean, I know I’m wrong ( I can’t be right ), but it sounds JUST like him.

    • AuraGuyChris

  • komiko12

    Wondah Howaito. lols.

  • Robgoro

That was great! …but what’s the release date? I don’t think I heard it even once. ;)

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

“The Wonderful 101 will be available on August 23rd in Europe and September 15th in North America. “

      • Robgoro

        (That was the joke) ;)

    • TaintedSeraph

I think they definitely said it enough times. xD

      • British_Otaku

I got the feeling that they recorded the direct’s parts separately but forgot to save Kamiya announcing the date for certain points like near the beginning and before the final trailer.

I’ve never had a date beaten into me this hard since 11.11.11 for Skyrim. >_>

  • Guest

What an incredible looking game. It’s got that stylized action touch that Platinum does better than anyone in the business, while still also looking so distinctively Nintendo. It’s like if you mashed Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin, and Bayonetta together you’d get Wonderful 101. I was already interested in the game because of Platinum, but now I honestly can’t wait for it! It’ll be my first truly great Wii U game!

  • That was a badass direct, especially considering it was for only one game. I wasn’t even honestly sure if the game was going to be as spectacular as I thought, but after that trailer, I can safely say this will be one of the best games of the year.

  • AuraGuyChris

Screw it. I’m buying this game. Reminds me a hell lot of Viewtiful Joe (and I know Clover members worked on this game.)

  • ShadowDivz

The green one reminds me of the fat kid from Charlie and the chocolate factory.
    Like..REALLY reminds me.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Cept that fatass is Deustch

  • Haha just gotta love this guy. If i had a Wii u id have this game on day one. I love all the characters personalities they all seem so lively and fun.

  • neocatzon

That was one wonderful direct. This game looks really over the top, Viewtiful Joe really fits here. Arggh.. seriously considering PC + Wii U combo for next gen, what to do, what to do.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Go PC+WiiU+3DS.

      • neocatzon

Already owned a 3DS. If only MGS V available on PC..

        • There’s no way MGSV isn’t coming to PC.

          • neocatzon

I know that, It’s just MGS series is the biggest reason I stay faithful to Sony. Don’t take me wrong it’s just a wishful thinking.

      • Anime10121

        +PS4 (or Xbone)

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No point in getting those for the next few years if you dont like any of their first party titles.

          • Anime10121

True dat, as the next gen exclusive software that I’m buying the console for (FFXV, KH3, and MGSV might as well be exclusive, as there’s no way in HELL im gonna get that for PS3, when I’m sure the next gen version will be much better), likely wont hit for at least a couple more years.

But I’m sure I’ll find SOMETHING on my launch PS4 to play (probably Knack and Watch Dogs), I mean, I bought my Wii U, launch month and STILL have yet to buy anything for it besides the $.99 Kirby game on VC.

Did the same with my 3DS (though in that case, I bought it the month before Megaman Legends 3 Prologue was supposed to hit, exclusively for that game) considering that game never released, I didnt buy a game for close to 7 months (Sonic Generations) and even THAT was just to have a game on it until KH 3D dropped.

So yeah, wise choice to wait, but I was under the impression that he was saying JUST a PC/Wii U combo for the entirety of Next gen, thats why I added PS4/Xbone :P

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Well, if you really have to HAVE Metal Gear then sure(Kojima himself said that he wanted to stop making Metal Gear at one point)

But… with the way this gen is shaping up everything is going to be on the PC anyway, unless the dev teams dont feel like making a pc version even though they’re down porting the game from the PC build.

I really dont appreciate Sony’s or MS’s ethic or this cloud shit they’re trying to shove down my throat so I’ll gladly stick to a PC.(It helps I dont like they’re first party content either)

On the flipside I’ve had many games I’ve purchased on my 3DS. And my WiiU is steadily building up a library of great titles.

          • Anime10121

My PC can’t play anything CLOSE to modern ( I know how to upgrade one, just never been the type to upgrade my own), always been too expensive to me, and like smart phones, to quickly outclassed by better tech, So yeah, gaming on a PC aint an option for me, heck Octodad would destroy my computer (so in other words, no uber perfect MGSV with mods for me )….

The 3DS (like the DS before it) is DEFINITELY a keeper, with hit after hit after hit releasing in quick succession, though I’ve yet to see anything on Wii U worth buying, The Wonderful 101 looks promising, and DEFINITELY getting Sonic though it looks like a step down from Generations, I dont really see anything to hype me on the Wii U front until next year, and more than likely each game I want (X, SSBWiiU, and Bayo2) will be released closer to the end of next year rather than the beginning…

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I think the fact that the WiiU’s library is about to compound a lot (it also managed to get the majority of the multiplatform titles coming out in the end of this year) So once thats all on the shelves for people to see and more content being offered on the way, the marketing will have its effect and people will actually buy it and enjoy its various uses(since you know, the games that showcase a small niblet of the things potential are coming this year)

  • d19xx

Kamiya: The Wonderful 101 is about using your brain and asking your mom….

Seriously this and Bayonetta 2 makes me want a WiiU…

  • SoundMatch

I expect someone to tweet about the game length, and see Kamiya point the middle finger. HAHA That would be gold.

  • Ban The Jackass

It’s a game of heroes ganging up on the bad guys! Looks wonderful!

  • Aaronrules380

US demo is out now from what I hear

  • Suicunesol

Hey guys, did anyone watch both the Japanese trailer and the Western trailer? They’re pretty much the same, but I couldn’t help but notice small differences between the two, especially regarding the female characters and their portrayals.

Regarding Wonder Pink in the Japanese version, especially during the transformation sequence when she poses, there are close-up shots on her chest and butt, and some of her poses are more suggestive than the Western version.

One of the main female antagonists, wearing a tight black suit, runs her hands across her body suggestively in the Japanese trailer. This scene is replaced in the Western trailer with her body rising out of water. Another female antagonist’s “ass-shot” (the woman with the pink heart theme) is removed in the Western version.

And for the short conversation between Green and Pink, in the Japanese version Green actually makes a comment about Pink’s “oppai” (breasts).

This isn’t unusual, of course. But I thought I might mention it ’cause it’s interesting.

    • $29082171

No worries. You know how sensible America is to these kind of things.

      • British_Otaku

        Great to hear.

        • Asura

Why the bloody hell anyone would want fanservice in a game like this is beyond me.

At least Platinum is staying true to its roots of objectifying women, the one and only thing I hate about it.

          • British_Otaku

Eh? For me, it is more about the dirty feeling of knowing that media that I enjoy has had content cut, whether it is not being allowed to see Franky’s ass (featured both in children’s manga and television anime by the way) in Unlimited Adventure in one cutscene, missing twenty minutes out of an adventure which will last me hours or women being objectified.

Since it’s here with all of the Punch Out esque racial stereotypes, superhero caricatures and adds to the charm of the title, it’s here to stay. >_>

Looking back at their track record since and even before becoming Platinum, they are fairly good at representing groups given that none of their titles are designed to be preachy or particularly conscious of gender/racial/etc politics nor against anyone.

The fanservice is far from the degree where you would keep children from playing the title or where it is a cause of concern (usually if it is that high, it’s too silly to be taken seriously or a H-Game outright).

    • Göran Isacson

One would hope those things could apply for the actual game too since I don’t really think we need ass-shots in a game ostensibly aimed at kids, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens here…

  • Anime10121

I’ve heard NA is supposed to be getting the demo later today, as I was getting ready to say NA Nintendo dropping the ball yet again. The first time since I bought a Wii U last November I’m ready to cut it on, and even our demo’s are late! NoE has been on the ball for quite some time, what the heck is NoA doing, twiddling their thumbs?

Oh well, not that I’ll likely be able to play it til tomorrow anyway (gotta work tonight so I’ll likely be asleep when it hits NA), but I AM excited to FINALLY play a game on my Wii U, and one that I’m excited to see how it turned out! This demo will decide whether this game returns to being a day one, or whether I’ll wait until a price drop (hopefully its the former, as I wanna support Platinum, but the comparison’s to Pikmin ugh).

    • British_Otaku

I hear the demo is already up in both regions (probably Japan as well, though we forget to mention em).

The game is nothing like Pikmin, unless you consider Portal to be like Call of Duty. >_>

      • Anime10121

Good to hear, definitely gonna give it a shot when I get off in the morning :D

  • Jake_Indiman

Is that Gideon Emery I hear as the announcer, and ingame????!!!! SOLD!!!

  • hazelnut1112

Oh man, that last trailer. This game looks so amazing, I need to get me a Wii U. Might buy this before getting a Wii U just to support Platinum and Kamiya.

  • Robgoro

I did not think that The Wonderful 101 was going to have much story depth, so the trailer at the end made me much, much more excited to pick it up and play it. Plus, hey, it’ll be a good transition from Pikmin 3 ;)

  • Göran Isacson

While I do love the name “Deathjerk”, I must call shenanigans on Kamiyas claim that the thought of a unite morph with 100 heroes is very exciting. I don’t know what one calls his expression in Japan, but it ain’t no excited I’ve ever heard of.

The morphs are pretty cool, though I do wonder how you control several morphs at the same time, and if every hero has their own morph. If so, how much variety can there be between them? Maybe what we’re seeing ehre are the “cathegories” they can slot into, hammer, gun, sword, whip, etc.

Ha ha I’m already loving wonder blue, dropping the rose like that… and then Wonder Black to the only hero with dark skin, that’s… Japan for you… and then an annoying jerk kid who’s going to be a pain in the ass and cause a lot of trouble and conflicts and we’re supposed to forgive him just because he’s a kid enters. Gotta admit, that’s one way to make me significantly less hyped on the plot.

    • British_Otaku

I wasn’t too interested in the 100 heroes as a concept, till I saw the depth which was being offered from cosmetic things like choosing a different hero (even temporary heroes like civilians or children) to lead Red, Blue or Green (probably the whole game goes the whole way) with their distinctive voice to how having more people makes a difference in power and effect on top of getting separate groups to do up to five attacks at once.

Your assumption about the groups seems to be correct. A good number of the heroes are able to fit into the colour classes which include Gun, Sword, Fist and the others. I hear that when you don’t have any spares (say Wonder Red is stunned), you can’t activate Unite Hand or whatever. We’ll have a good number of weapons and skills to switch between just with them.

Out of the primary colour leads, Wonder Blue has definitely got my attention as well for being such a glimmerous fop. You can call most of the heroes out for being token Punch Out like stereotypes, from Wonder Yellow to Wonder Beer to Wonder White. It isn’t really a Japan thing, when you hardly see other games feature more than one person of an “other” culture or ethnicity. It matters more when attempting to flesh out that faction like in an RPG’s foreign lands.

The kid? Luka seems like he will be dragging you into trouble for sure. The game isn’t likely to dwell on him much even if the story does, the game is focused on getting more heroes, more abilities and more wonderful at bashing the hell out of the invaders. He seems amusing enough to me and at worst, I’ll enjoy the battles around him even if some of the segments involving him are silly.

      • Göran Isacson

I’ll admit, my patience for the “bratty kids who create conflict just by being bratty kids” is very low- can’t do much about it, I just don’t like it. Still I think the rest of the game can be the good kind of cheese that can overcome that.

I would say the Wonder Black thing IS a Japan thing though. Or maybe I should specify: no American company making a project this big would essentially give the only character with dark skin (that we have seen so far at least) the “black” codename, if only because I don’t think there’s anyone who didn’t see the original Power Rangers and recall how that worked out for them. A cast consisting of colorful national stereotypes, oh THAT you can see in games from every nation ever. But this particular thing? That I think is WAY more likely to come from Japan than from any western country with a bigger mix of ethnicities.

Although the part about Wonder Red being stunned disabling his Unite makes me curious. Can the enemies do damage to individual heroes, or will the “lead” hero take damage from the enemies attacks? Or are the extra heroes a kind of “health bar” and if the enemies attack will they just whittle down the heroes until only the leader is left? So many questions…

        • British_Otaku

I suppose so. Bratty kids tend to be a lot worse for me in non-interactive media (I imagine some were on fire from Devil May Cry’s anime, even if I liked it overall), but yeah.

I don’t see the Wonder Black thing as anything significant, even if Power Rangers got some flack perhaps for the choice back then, all of the characters were silly caricatures and in many colourful video games or cartoons as well. Even if Japan (and then I’ve only seen this example from Kamiya) is more likely to do so, the only “extra” line they crossed was using the word “Black” when everyone else has a codename based on their clothes, hair or stereotypical colour as well.

If you have a Wii U, you can check out the demo, most of the gameplay footage online naturally is going to be of the players doing fairly well or dominating the game. I get the impression that once your squad are stunned (which can range from a few people to 100) that you probably lose more health and that you probably still take damage regardless. They can’t have them act as rings in Sonic as it would be too generous.

could you tell us when the game is available, again?

  • dahuuuundge

Is there a video with subs of Kamiya talking instead?

    • Symbol de Au

I’m surprised he used a translator at all since his English is so fluent when he’s trolling people on twitter. Maybe he just didn’t want to film a second video…

    • British_Otaku

Maybe someone subbed the Japanese version of this somewhere, otherwise I recommend watching the Japanese one. It feels weird to hear him speaking like Iwata given his implied persona from Twitter. :P

Said the release 1000 times there too.

  • Thom

Can’t stop playing the demo. Love this.
