Sony Now Have Their Own Version Of Nintendogs

By Ishaan . August 17, 2013 . 9:30am

Sony already have their own take on Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., and now they have their own version of Nintendogs, too—a PlayStation Vita game titled PlayStation Vita Pets.

While the game is called PlayStation Vita Pets, the trailer only shows dogs. You can pick from four different puppies, each with their own personality and sense of humour. Oh, and they can talk. PlayStation Vita Pets is slated for release in 2014.

This seems like a good game for the more casual players, hopefully they announce more triple AAA games at gamescon on Tuesday

  • $29082171

What took you so long, Siliconera?

    • FatlusFan

You mean Ishaan. He’s a Nintendo fanboy if you haven’t realized yet.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

You do know ishaan isn’t the only writer here. It just happen to be so that he wrote this article..

        • Lisandra_brave

Well, the fact is the wrote it.
And everything in it has a anti-sony, pro-nintendo spin to it.
He totally dismisses sony franchises as copies, pardon, “their own take on”, of nintendo franchises, simultaneously dismissing and implying they’re inferior.
But if you wanna see plain proof of how much of a nintendo fanboy he is, you should take an objective look at the media create sales articles. He never gives equal recognition to all sides, only promotes nintendo.
Also, calling it now, this comment gets deleted

          • Suicunesol

Maybe it only looks anti-Sony to you because he’s bringing to light Sony’s recent habit of borrowing Nintendo concepts. :P This is not a secret now. This is the third time Sony has done it, and I’m sure it was on everyone’s minds when they saw the article, regardless of how Ishaan could have worded it.

Ishaan could have abstained from mentioning Nintendogs. Maybe he should have, for Sony-fans sake.

          • xavier axol

it might be, because ishaan wasn’t clear enough with the article. just like lisandra pointed out, ( “their own take on”) would imply as if he meant copying. which we all know that Nintendo were successful with those franchises, but weren’t invented by them. it would be like accusing EA’s battleflied for copying Activision’s calledofduty, or 2k’s GTA with THQ’s, saintrow. my point is each genre of games is up for grads. why would he bring that up in the first place? I don’t think it would be to ridicule, but rather he seem’s to point out that sony is doing the Nintendo approach with very poor execution and down right cynical. in trying to appeal to a broader audience with the “young” in mind, and that’s not how Nintendo do things. besides, when sony does it’s own thing. we get shadow of the colossus or uncharted which to me felt very personal, every time i kill one of the giants, i would feel miserable , or when i hated when drake just leaves chloe for elena at the end of uncharted 2. even though i really like elena, there’s something about chloe that was just a blast to see her.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well if you ask me, i don’t think this is the game Vita needed especially when we already see how Nintendogs is unable to make all the casual gamer went back to 3DS.

I mean, when we have a bigger and stronger brand with the same genre fail, why do you even try with a new brand to take on those type of customer who don’t even care?

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Deep. People sure dont like ishaan lol

          • $29082171

I guess that’s why he made an article showing how Dragon’s Crown is still going strong.

            http://www.siliconera.com/2013/08/14/this-week-in-sales-dragons-crown-still-going-strong/

          • FatlusFan

He made it because it’s his work after all, it’s just that he has a good speech to elude people and hide what he truly thinks. I have many screenshots showing how much he likes to defend Nintendo and despise Sony, even bashing some Siliconera users. I’m not gonna post them here though, it’s pointless because they will get deleted just like my comments.

          • $29082171

If he does his job then there’s no problem then, since he promotes on every side as shown in that article.

            You sound extremely paranoid, too.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Your posts are still here even though they have nothing to do with the topic. None of us here hide our passions or the things we like to play. Sorry if our happiness offends you.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Also: Using a 10-minute mail address for Disqus? That’s not shady at all, nope. (Unlike a particular somebody, allow me to provide a [screenshot].)

          • LaserVision

You hear that Ishaan? Your reign of terror over Sony Corporation (ticker symbol: SNE) is at an end!! Your bullying of this poor mutinational company shall cease because Lisandra brave/FatlusFan HAS SCREENSHOTS!!

          • zaidandzhadow

NOW that looks like cyber bullying, shame on you nintendo fanboys.

          • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

Regardless of whatever possible bias there is in this article, it doesn’t change the fact that this looks like a very obvious rip-off of Nintendogs. They even went as far as to copy the name of it by using their own brand name. It’s not like Nintendo created the pet simulation genre, but it pretty obvious that this is just trying to capitalize on their success with it.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Would it be better to call this Sony’s take on Imagine: Pets? It’s either going to be that or Nintendogs. It’s a game where you put a digital dog in a tutu. Not exactly a brand new experience.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I don’t even see where Ishaan said that it is inferior compared to Nintendogs here.

He just said that Sony is going to have their own version of Nintendogs in Vita. Nothing fancy worded there.

I guess you are too paranoid to even understand here.

    • M’iau M’iaut

We were busy trying to confirm if this was going to have anteater DLC. That appears to be a negative, btw.

      • SlickRoach

Still got my fingers crossed for a llama or sloth.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Harvest Moon has the llama video game market pretty well cornered.

          • Time Sage

I thought Lammas were a Sims thing?

          • M’iau M’iaut

            Right right its alpacas.

  • Guest

Pets? It’s more like dogs solo.
    No love for Hamsters? :P

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

      This is a must!
Hamsters + Exploration segments = Hamtaro spiritual successor. :D

  • Chaos_Knight

    Then Microsoft joins in…

  • Abysswalker90

  • Highasthesky

This is EXACTLY the game the Vita needed :D

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      it too late though
just like how Sony was too late to do PS All-Stars

      • British_Otaku

I don’t think it’s a question of being late (how can just a year into the Vita’s life be late?) as much as not having the right level of execution.

It needs to be marketed well and be good enough to hold our interest. PS All-Stars had issues beyond releasing late in the PS3′s life, like how kills were confirmed, the line up of characters and the overall game feel.

The Last of Us is a lovely swansong for the PS3 on it’s own merits.

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

          you are missing my point

          By being late I mean
creating this type of game when Nintendo a competitor has already captured the audiences years before.

If Sony had creating this during PSP days that would had been a different story.

You are talking release date. I am talking about thinking about those audiences early than expected.

          • British_Otaku

            I see.

I still hold that we already get plenty of imitations and successors based on popular formulas. Late comers stay a chance at success as long as they are good, marketed well and have enough to distinguish them.

Smash Bros isn’t the first 4 Player Brawler. And even after it we have had plenty of other fighting games in the same vein with a focus on item collection and management, stage exploitation and platforming (Ultimate Ninja, Power Stone, Jump Superstars, Gigant Battle)

If it was a PSP game, it would still be likely later than Nintendogs, seen as even more of an imitation (worse yet, it won’t even have a camera, mic or touchscreen by default) and even overshadowed by Ubisoft’s countless Pets games.

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

SSB was in development for SNES after Kirby Super Star. Later move to N64 in 1996. Became officially SSB in 1997.

Even if it was on PSP it would had a better chance of competing like Crash Team Racing vs Mario Kart 64

          • British_Otaku

It’s a question of interface and hype.
Crash Team Racing was on a more successful platform than the opposition. Crash Bandicoot was pretty big considering that Mario had been around for a decade longer. Crash Team Racing wasn’t going to miss out on any mechanics by being on the PS1 instead of the N64.

When SSB was in the works and finished doesn’t change the fact that we have had similar games released after it which managed to also be good and do well.

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

That the point, Creating the competing IP around the time before it too late too.

          • zaidandzhadow

Come on there wuld have never been a Metroid/ Castlevania, Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong Country, Call of duty if companies didn’t have to release a game that have captured any audience due to it “belonging” to another developer/brand.

  • SHSL Big Bro

Pets? Okay, where’s my pet bear, Sony?

    • AweOfShe

      DLC, no doubt. :P

  • Suicunesol

I’d really be okay with this if the pets didn’t talk. :/ I’m much more partial to animals showing their personalities through actions and barking–like real dogs.

(Unless we can get Sassy from Homeward Bound. :P)

I do like the concept of exploration

    • anarchy_panty

I would buy four copies if they somehow got Sally Field to do one of the voices.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        You mean Samuel L Jackson

    • Ferofax

Pets talking would be fine… if it was Seaman talking sarcastically with Leonard Nimoy’s voice. THEREFORE:

      Seaman>>>>Talking Dog

  • ZekeFreek

Sadly, they tried as hard as they could, but they just couldn’t come up with a pet-related pun for PSVITA.

    • SlickRoach

      Vitamals…? That’s the best I got :l

      • ZekeFreek

If I were a marketing department, I’d lynch you both…

      • Suicunesol

        *laughs* Promote this man.

    • leingod

      Dogstation Vita.

      • kylehyde

        Sounds good to me

  • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

That voice acting is really annoying. It’s like it’s trying to take after all of those bad talking animal movies we’ve had in the past several years.

  • GriffithOfTheHawk

Well both Nintendo & Sony are copying the Tamagotchi concept if we go in the “who was first” territory.

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

I was thinking that i was the only one that remembered tamagotchi with all that virtual pet care. anyway, let’s the fight start and the comments get deleted

    • Anesia Hunter

I really thought about it, but it kind of is. And while I’m thinking about it, I need to buy a new one.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Pokemon was conceived before Tamagotchi’s existed.

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Didn’t both of those come out around (or even within) the same year? But the play-mechanics are different, so the comparison is kinda pointless.

        • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

          yeah. both are from 1996

        • Kaitsu

If anything, Digimon and Tamagotchis are comparable. Because Bandai. And Digimon World 1 is a big example lol

          And the Digivices.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I also heard about Digimon having had their own line of Tamagotchi variants back in the days.

      • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

megami tensei and shin megami tensei is older than both

edit:lol downvoted for speaking the truth

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Dont worry about the downvotes, they have yet to understand the gospel of the true goddess resurrection of digital devils and the saga that is inexplicably told (They follow people around looking to eat their souls through downvotes, they go after everyone. Be wonderful, be wunderbar like Wonder Beer and ignore them)

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          I like your comments Ni…..

    • Isaac Newton

Soooo many true in your statement!

    • jujubee88

Holy sheet I wanted one of those so bad when I was a kid. Too bad that when I tried one at the kb toys I never got the hang of it.

It was still such a gangster thing that crossed the thresh hold of being a toy/game with such great merchandising appeal. I’m not sure if a Tamagotchi type concept will happen anytime soon again (or reach the same levels of hype as it did back then).

    • fireemblembeast

Wow that brings back memories…I still have mine in my closet but I think it’s broken. Anyways all the girls in my class had them and I remember getting it when everyone else stopped getting them lol. They were fun though

  • Odin

I’m not going to parade around and say this is fact, but doesn’t it seem like this is one of the few reasons why Sony isn’t leading the industry? And this is without using the excuse of how Nintendo has been around for over 100 years.

  • Scarletmoonwish

:I The game would be more original if they use any other animals beside a dog. The fact they using a dog when it call pets make it scream Nintendogs when you first look at it, despite the game play being different. Cat, or a Ferret would be more original.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

should have been cats! since the mascots are cats lol Toro and Kuro as vita pets would have been cute

    • British_Otaku

It would been nice to see their mascots get more reach outside of Japan than appearances in crossover fighters which don’t feel like removing content.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        indeed

  • Spirit Macardi

Sony, if you’re going to copy Nintendo, then copy having backwards compatibility.

    • xXDGFXx

What’s it like to see the world thru a cylinder?

      • Spirit Macardi

        Can’t say I know.

Though, maybe you could tell me what it’s like to get on someone’s case over a harmless opinion.

        • ShadowDivz

It’s pretty funny. Some days more than others.
          Oh, was that rhetorical?

          • Symbol de Au

I’m pretty sure it was rhetorical…and it wasn’t even directed at you…oh wait was that rhetorical?
            Anyway I agree.

    • leingod

Well, the Vita is pretty much backwards compatible.

      • TheExile285

obviously DD PSP games aren’t PSP games

        /sarcasm

      • Spirit Macardi

My UMDs would beg to differ.

        • leingod

I do miss Kingdom Hearts BBS, to be honest.

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

come on sony you can do better then that *sigh* well if it helps move some units then i wont complain

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Thing is, it won’t. For a system that was supposed to be cattered to the hardcores this falls on the kiddy section Sony fanboys say the 3DS aims for. And this comes from somebody with a PSV who plays on it every single day~.

      • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

        sadly I agree

  • cameron forsyth

    meh, originality is overated.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I dunno. I like the exploration part but I think I would like the talking animal part if the animals were more cartoon styled. More realistic animals talking just gives me bad Disney vibes.

  • leingod

Love my Vita, but this game in particular looks pretty crappy. Specially the dogs talking, kinda kills any attempt at animal cuteness.

    • Marco Tinè

When executed right, the idea works wonderfully. Look at the old A Dog’s Life for PS2, a true hidden gem in the machine’s catalog. I think the adventure aspect makes the game 10x more interesting than a mere pet simulation.

    • ShadowDivz

Yeah. Talking dogs is a mood killer.

  • Dokuro

No company should make any kind of games or else every game made would be a “copy of nintendo”…I dont get why people likes to compare any game with nintendo’s games…

Anyways, this game looks cool and funny, no doubt Im gonna get it =).

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

Wow you would think a website would have more respect then to say it’s a ripoff

    • Never

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA RESPECT?
Oh sorry, I don’t think they were paid enough to not state it like it is.
“Playstation Vita PETS!” <- greatest name
A shoddy looking uninspired game where they thought "Hm, we need a cash in but how will we seperate ourselves from our competition?" "I've got it, we'll add VOICES!", no no- we should clearly respect these people, they've earned it. After all, they've somehow made the game even less involving than what they're clearly ripping off.

It's almost like a movie game, somehow bringing back memories of PSABR… but even that had some gameplay beyond "find a story book, follow your dog around!"
But hey don't worry, throughout development they had a dog telling them "Hey, for a HUMAN, you're pretty awesome!" as a constant reminder of just how super-duper awesome their writer is.
You should look forward to it too!

Seriously there is no one in the gaming industry that knows why competition is good. You have competition so you PUSH yourselves not so you say "If we have bloom no one will notice how shameless we are!" or in this case voices, adding voices adds NOTHING to the gameplay. It adds even LESS to having a pet, especially a virtual one inside a game with no gameplay.
And yes, believe it or not the iPhone and its 1$ games are proof enough that even casuals and children like games better when they focus on the gameplay and being involving. Ugh, if they already have a template why is it worse? Why is it always so much worse? What is wrong with these people.

      • Carlos Luis Ayala

Cause Nintendo is so perfect and never did anything I doubtbthey invented the genre exactly like how they take credit for smash when Namco made it on the arcade before

  • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

A good pet game for a sony platform…

    Tokyo Jungle? lol

  • ShadowDivz

Sony stop doing this. Seriously it’s embarassing.

First the Playstation move, then All stars(granted that was interesting and it had Kat in it) now this.

And the fact the animals talk kinda breaks the immersion.
And why does the girl Voice Actress sound familiar?

  • Stranger On The Road

If the first company that come up with an idea is the only one that can make use of it then we will have fewer restaurants that would allow reservation, fewer places that use point cards or reward programs. And most certainly fewer games.

How about online RPGs, should every other MMORPG be called a rip off? How about 3rd person shooters? Strategy games? chess games? action adventure games?

FPS are not accused of copying each other because they are based on real world objects. Pets are the same, limited to what the real world pets can do and the activities that you can do with them. I haven’t played the Nintendo version of the game (not my type of game), and I won’t get the Sony version either. But just like CoD and Battlefield try to compete with each other by modifying their games, I see no reason to deny these 2 games (and others) the same treatment. Heck, Nintendogs can’t be the first game in the market to let you have a pet. Didn’t some other games come out to do with ponies?

Any way, when they make a game where you can hangout with dragons or anime girls then let me know.

You like shopping, just like me!; that was evil, shouldn’t teach this to young kids.

    • Symbol de Au
      • Stranger On The Road

I should clarify that, something like Love Plus or Photo Kano; but with anime girls :-)

        • s07195

Anime-style, you mean? Or girls from anime series?

  • Katboy

    I hate dogs

  • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

If anybody thinks this article is anti-Sony for pointing out the similarities to Nintendogs, try reading some other articles. I’ve read several from other news sites that also said this was like Sony’s version of Nintendogs. I fail to see the bias in mentioning the very obvious similarities with that franchise.

  • Croix Zapp

how about a cat version where the cat don’t give a shit about you?
    would prolly sell more

  • Antixono

Have they been watching dog with a blog?

  • Pichi

More intrigued about the fantasy elements, so I hope that part lives up.

  • Learii

they talk… I rather have they go woof woof

  • Syn

Uhhhh, the talking -_- really dont like that, I do love the Ar feature though, that would be some awesome fun.
