Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Adds Stretch Goal For Rebalanced Game, Alternate Costumes

By Ishaan . September 6, 2013 . 9:00am

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the upcoming Shantae game for PC, current-gen and next-gen consoles, has a new stretch goal in its Kickstarter campaign—at $700,000, WayForward will add alternate costumes as well as rebalanced stats and special moves.

You probably recognize at least one of those alternate costumes. On the left is Shantae dressed as Officer Patricia Wagon from the Mighty Switch Force games.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero has accumulated around $145,000 in Kickstarter funds thus far. WayForward hope to reach $400,000 to help fund the development of the game, with all funds beyond that contributing to various stretch goals.

In addition to Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the developer is also creating Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, a completely separate game for Nintendo 3DS. You can read about that game here.

    Why is she white now?

    • Brimfyre

To make her stand out better against HD visuals. They said it’s only temporary.

It would be cool if they added color swap pallets (or w/e its called) like Code of Princess and Dragon’s Crown. Pale & Brown Solagne were my favorites.

        • British_Otaku

Since this game is using high quality sprites, that should be pretty easy in comparison to designing new costumes like the above Mighty Switch Force, Ninja and Swimsuit costumes along with unique animations for all of them.

I would hope for palette swaps on the level of BlazBlue (as I haven’t seen CoP or Dragon’s Crown’s options) which even has a high saturation one, see the 12th one (right column, third row) below:

I haven’t got a clue how it works or if it’s easy or not but those look awesome. If they can at least get three different skin tones it would be great. Even Pokemons doing it.

          • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Pokemon is polygonal these days. No more sprites.

          • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

Oh yea you’re right, as is Code of Princess. I guess that makes pallet swapping a lot easier. Still, they’ve been doing it since SNES-era games so I actually can’t imagine it being too difficult.

          • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Yeah, really I think palette swapping should be just as easy, regardless. The only thing is that I think new outfits and such are easier with polygonal graphics, because obviously with sprites you have to redraw the whole thing for the new outfit.

    • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Was just gonna say the same. I was going to say “I thought she was Arabic!”

  • Genjo

    that’s shantae Sister didn’t u know that? :P

  • Final Agent

The crowdfunding had pretty much ground to a halt… Mighty no.9 is great and all, but it might be killing Shantae’s chances…

Also, they’ll be giving her some darker skin, its still a work in progress

    • anarchy_panty

I really wish they’d went with Indiegogo instead of a Kickstarter. At least then they’d have the option to keep some of the money we’ve thrown at them, rather than not getting any of it and the game being delayed indefinitely.

      • British_Otaku

Since I heard that Indiegogo can let the founder get the money regardless of whether the key goal is hit. I got the impression that it must be hard to pay for or less accessible than Kickstarter for so many video game companies to push for KS instead.

I saw a Indiegogo which had a REALLY high goal just because, they still have over a month left and the last donation (only seven of them so far) was 13 days ago… >_> It’s part of their “charm”, but if anyone can get away with easy funding which is millions away from their goal. It’s weird that Indiegogo is rarely used. >_>

        • anarchy_panty

I think it’s mostly due to name recognition. Kickstarter is pretty widely known by this point, but a lot of people will still ask you what the hell you’re talking about if you bring up Indiegogo. As far as I understand it, Indiegogo is actually cheaper than Kickstarter, which usually drains about 10% of your funds versus Indiegogo which takes 9% if you set it up so you keep the money even if you don’t hit your goal, and only 4% if you choose the all-or-nothing option.

    • Brimfyre

Damn. I am way more interested in this than Mighty 9.

Mighty 9 just seems like a shameless attempt to get attention using his past glory.

      • Final Agent

That’s a bit unfair, I don’t want this crowdfunding to become a competition, its just unfortunate timing for poor Shantae.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kevassa02 kevassa

Sorry for butting in, but then why mention Mighty no 9 at all? Specially when both projects were announced out of the blue and without any way of purposedly getting in each other’s way (what I mean: it’s unlucky coincidence).

          • batanen

Or a lucky coincidence. I heard about Shantae from Mighty No. 9 comments. But I think Shantae is not that well known. Console release might change the issue, though.

          • idrawrobots

Just wait for River City Ransom 2 to get thrown in the mix. Or maybe only I care about that.

          • British_Otaku

Nope. All I could think of when I played Scott Pilgrim (brilliant, so are the comics and live action movie) was how I would like more River City Ransom… On that note…

On the Japanese 3DS e-Shop, I played two demos related to the series, both matched the style of the River City Ransom but I get the feeling they wouldn’t rerelease it twice…

Looking it up, they were Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-Kun Special (a remake of the original Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-Kun) and Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun SP: Rantou Kyousoukyoku (I don’t know but the demo had a store mode like River City Ransom). If you look at this Wikipedia link ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunio-kun) they are making lots of games, but just aren’t localising them.

          • Herok♞

Wayforward has been teasing this kickstarter for a while, according to some people

        • Brimfyre

          Just stating my personal opinion.

        • anarchy_panty

But isn’t it already a competition? Albeit an unintentional one, but a competition none the less.

          • Final Agent

Well, Guess I should say, I don’t want it to be a flat out war.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Ugh….no offence, but Shantae is hardly much better in that regard, considering it’s a sequel to an established series.

Heck, considering Wayforward has another project going on (which happens to be ANOTHER Shantae game), one could argue that Comcept is the one that desperately needs the cash.

        • Brimfyre

          Offence taken.

    • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Eh? It’s got 27 days left and nearly half the funding goal already. It’s definitely going to get funded.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

I think a safe bet is that at $1.1 million we’re looking at voice acting. Check the icon on their page and think about that.

But again, considering its halt in the last few days, its lack of exposure over the years all told even in the face of being dubbed one of the best handhelds in a year recently and against the mentions of Mighty No. 9, that might be a lot to ask for, let alone getting funded. I still have a lot of people telling me they’ve NEVER heard of Shantae, regardless of its exposure as of late and how long it’s been around.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

can we make shantae even more sexy?

  • SetzerGabbiani

That ninja costume looks like the female ninjas from Disgaea.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Dat MSF costume~

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

oh i hope they reach it that mighty switch force outfit is too adorable

  • WyattEpp

I wonder when they hired Harada to do their art?

But really, this version really wouldn’t look at all out of place in Disgaea!

  • grayson gee

I don’t understand much of the arguing over Mighty No.9 and Shantae. Shantae is a well established franchise, and Mighty No.9 is essentially a reboot of Mega Man. I hope that both these games get the funding they need to be released at their highest quality. Also is it possible to get all the current Shantae games on the 3DS? I’ve been wanting to play that series for awhile now.

    • Cellsai

Yep. The original GBC game is on the virtual console, the DSi game is also available in the store and there’s a 3DS game coming soon.

      • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Only thing missing is the canceled GBA version. :)

I’d really like a re-release of their GBA game Sigma Star Saga.

  • Repede91

Never thought there would be a Kickstarter I would invest in, but now Iv`e funded two in the past week.

  • PoweredByHentai

I want my belly-dancing half genie girl. XD

  • Wake

SHE HAS A BAND-AID ON HER KNEE. How cute is that. Funded.

  • Curtis Kam

they’re working out the skin tome and that not her final color.

  • Guest

As racially charged as this may come off, I’ll refrain from supporting the game until her skin tone is restored. Personally, I’m tired of Caucasian protagonists, but I can understand why American and Japanese games would have white people as main characters (majority demographic). However, if the game depicts a hero from another part of the country, I’d like to see that demographic represented. A failure to do so just feels somewhat traitorous to me. I know people will feel otherwise, and I may get the guillotine for my personal feelings, but… *shrugs* I just don’t feel like my money should fund more misrepresentation and racial elitism in video games.
