Link Nearly Had Eye Beams In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Link was nearly given eye-beams during the development The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on the Gamecube console, according to Nintendo development staff.

In an Iwata Asks interview that discusses the upcoming HD remake of The Wind Waker for Wii U, the original game’s design manager, Satoru Takizawa, mentions that due to The Wind Waker’s stylized, almost anime-esque art style with large eyes, eye beams were considered as one of the features that would take advantage of the new look.

“Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make [the characters’] facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth,” Takizawa says. “Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes!”

Takizawa elaborates, “[Shigeru] Miyamoto-san and [Takashi] Tezuka-san said we needed to supply a reason for the eyes being so big. I don’t think beams were really an option, though.”

Ultimately, instead of giving Link eye beams, the decision was made to have Link’s large eyes convey hints to the player, by having them move and gaze at important places and objects.

That… would have been awesome XD
A dungeon where you get a pair of glasses that projects beams would have been a blast.

Ganon: you can’t defeat me! I’m stronger, faster, I can take much more damage, and I have the Triforce of Power!…
Link: yeah, but I have laser eyebeams.
    Ganon: *gulp*

    EYE BEAMS? That wounds AWESOME.

  • SirRichard

I really, really want eyebeams to be in a Zelda game now, maybe as like a silly replacement for the bow and arrow or something. It just sounds too funny to pass up.

  • Go2hell66

They can give him the eye beams in smash bros can’t they?

    • British_Otaku

They made a Twilight Princess design for Sheik that made it into Brawl, there is a chance that this could get into Smash Bros 4…

I wouldn’t mind seeing development gags like this appearing in the Smash series to distinguish characters even more. I want to see the GameCube island in the WindWaker stage too. >_>

“Oh Link, what big eyes you have!”

“The better to melt you with!”
(Of course Link doesn’t talk and this is just replaced with him blasting the questioner and yelling “HYAH!”)

Link talks in this game (he “meows”). And I think Tetra also says fully voiced sentences! Or, is that in another game?

    MEKARABEAM!

    …wow I feel old now.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

New Link, give his Laser eyes!! or better yet….use his laser beam to make fire arrows

  • DS23

That really wouldn’t have suited the game’s artstyle at all and thus I kind of wish they’d added it back in for the Wii U ver.
