<< Last week’s software sales chart

In its second week on store shelves, Monster Hunter 4 still ruled the sales charts in Japan. The game sold nearly another 474,000 copies in its second week, and one wonders what sales would look like if there weren’t shortages at retail. Of course, part of these shortages could be offset by download copies, just as they were at launch.

At #2 on the top-20 chart was a visual novel published by 5pb. Released on the Vita, the game sold around 16,500 copies.

Finally, the retail PS3 version Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn bounced back into the top-20 at the #3 spot. Last week, the game ranked at #28 on the software sales chart, indicating that there was probably a shortage at retail, which Square Enix addressed. Of course, the sales listed in the charts represent only part of the picture, as A Realm Reborn is also available digitally on both PC and PS3, and retail PC copies aren’t tracked here either.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

    Can’t wait to see Pokemon X & Y sales.

    • ronin4life

      I don’t think there is anyone who can… ^__^;;

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

Go XIV! You deserve it. xD Love this game.

  • HerosLight

Very glad that FF14 ARR is doing very well. I need to get it sometime.

  • TheExile285

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Game sold better than expected for a VN released a week after MH4.

I hope Trails in Flash sells well on PS3 & Vita next week.

    • Slayven19

I don’t think you have to worry about that since pre-orders were pretty good.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I doubt MH4 affected the game in any way. The two are aimed at very different audiences.

    • http://www.santashi.com/ Santashi

I’ve contributed a +1 to Trails. ;) Hope it does well, too.

Minor increase for some 3DS games and Youkai Watch still among Top Ten! :D

Also, 3DS LTD sales surpassed Wii, amazing!
Let’s see how much more it can get from Pokemon and this holiday season.
I think it can easily sell more than 25 million units until the end of its lifetime.

  • AuraGuyChris

That’s one long video game title right there.

Go Final Fantasy & SNAFU! =^_^=

  • ronin4life

I’ve seen some discussions about MH4, with some people downplaying the successes compared to p3rd by saying p3rd had shortages for months, and had no Download Version… Are these decent arguments in any way? I feel they aren’t, but I thought someone here might have some insight…

Also, did WWHD release this week? WiiU sales increased, but I don’t see any WiiU games charted…

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

If anything, it’s the other way around. Monster Hunter 4 has shortages, too, and the fact that it does have a download version reduces the sales you see at retail.

In the case of P3rd, retail was the only way to go for many, many months, so those sales were accounted for by sales trackers like Media Create when people eventually did manage to find copies.

In the case of 4, there’s no telling how many additional copies have been sold over P3rd because there are a large number of download sales that aren’t accounted for. All we have are vague estimates for first-week download sales, which looked healthy and showed it outselling P3rd.

Ultimately, trying to nitpick differences between this game and P3rd’s sales is a fool’s errand. 4 is a very successful game and will go on to sell multiple millions of copies, just like P3rd did. It will outdo Capcom’s forecasts months in advance and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

    • KingGunblader

I don’t think Wind Waker HD is out in Japan yet, and if its, it’s download only like the West, so those sales wouldn’t be tracked.

Although I don’t live in Japan, it’s probably worth noting that I’m a Wii U owner now. I couldn’t resist the special GamePad. It looks very nice next to my Skyward Sword Wii Remote Plus.

“Even In A Game, There’s Something Wrong With My Teen Romantic Comedy Life”. And to think I complained that “Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key”, “Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth”, “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood” and “Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner – Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army” were insanely long titles. Is it that necessary?

    • Guest

!? That is an insanely long post :P

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

        Life imitating art, I guess?

  • Cheesy04

If Oregairu’s game doesn’t get localized I’ll be so sad :( 16k isn’t that impressive but it’s decent.

    • TheExile285

VNs almost never get localized. The Oregairu Vita game has like 0% chance :(

Is the anime even serialized yet?

  • British_Otaku

Mushibugyo did really poorly, I’m not a follower of the manga or anime series but I expect licensed games to hit some sort of numbers on the 3DS (not more moderate numbers than The Wonderful 101′s first week). Namco Bandai probably made a poor call on making a game based on the series or the game didn’t translate into something appealing (wish I had a demo to tell).

I guess NB will make their money back with Toriko, Kuroko no Basket and One Piece games as the year ends.

I must comment on Youkai Watch’s legs… It isn’t as high as the previous week on the charts, but Top 10 and selling multiple thousands steadily is pretty impressive.

    • Solomon_Kano

Damn. And here I thought the Magi game did bad. Mushibugyo did a 10th of its numbers.

I don’t think it’s a matter of it being a poor call or a statement to the game’s quality though. All 3DS software that isn’t Pokemon will be suffering for the rest of the year.

      • British_Otaku

Magi’s first game on the 3DS got around 30,000? That sounds pretty comfy for a low budget game, it seems to have been well received by the audience (even if I wasn’t impressed by the demo >_>) according to the e-Shop and it’s bound to sell a bit more as the anime approaches and they release free bonus content (characters and a new dungeon). It’s probably not enough to chart and probably more digital than new hard copies but it’s something.

I can follow that people will save their money for GTA or Pokemon when other games are coming out around the same period, but I still think that licensed games should get much bigger numbers. That’s why I’m convinced that Namco Bandai may have picked an anime license which wouldn’t sell games quickly… That said, with the coming weeks we’ll see how more games do and I can make more accurate guesswork. >_> If I see good numbers from the newbies like Hero Bank and Gaist Crusher (which will have an anime by then) and other relatively new licenses with games, it may be marketing or the Mushibugyo franchise’s presence in the public eye.

        • Solomon_Kano

It debuted at 30k. Don’t recall how far it got past that.

Typically, I expect more of licensed games (I thought Magi would do better than 30k, especially on 3DS), but MH/Pokemon season changes everything unless you’re another big name. I’d be willing to bet Mushibugyo would’ve hit at least twice that number if it had released a few weeks earlier.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I think this is the lowest number that the PSV has hit in Japan sales wise. What the hell~?

    • TheExile285

Were you really expecting decent sales during the MH4 craze? I’m more surprised sales weren’t this low the week before.

Don’t forget that there are new Vita models and VIta TV coming out too.

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I wasn’t expecting 20k but with price drop + decent catalog of games (at this point in Japan) I find 5k sharp to be pathetic. I was expecting something more like 8k ~ 10k. But really, they only keep on dropping~.

Once again, its the MH4 craze. When Pokemon comes out it will be the same.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t think the new Vita models and/or Vita TV have anything to do with it, to be honest. This trend with Vita sales has been going on for months now, whereas those announcements are very recent events.

It just boils down to a lack of software and, yes, the MH4 release. They obviously have no control over the latter, but it looks like they don’t really have a solution for the former either.

  • Solomon_Kano

The 3DS passed the Wii’s lifetime sales this week, so that’s pretty cool.

    • KingGunblader

I find this very interesting considering the Wii was a hit right out of the gate and the 3DS took a good year to get going. But I guess the lesson is don’t f*ck with Monster Hunter. :P

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

The lesson is more that Japan doesn’t care about home consoles any more, and hasn’t since 2006.

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Whoops. Totally didn’t notice that Vita game by 5pb actually has an English title that people already recognize it by. Title replaced.

    • ronin4life

What was the name in Japanese?
      ? _?

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yahari Game demo Ore no Seishun Love Kome wa Machigatteiru

  • Jordan Coleman

Well good for 14, the peps on 8-4 or saying it’s pretty big in Japan. Happy to see that 14-2 is working out. Too bad it’s the PS3 version.

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

So if only 209K sold in Japan, and over 1 million registered copies of people playing online. Seems like US/EU is loving on FFXIV, glad we are, I am loving it too!
    http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/308022/

Apparently my nickname online is The Slutty Summoner, I wonder why, lol?

    • Akuosa

“Of course, the sales listed in the charts represent only part of the picture, as A Realm Reborn is also available digitally on both PC and PS3, and retail PC copies aren’t tracked here either.”
It didn’t sell only 209k in Japan. We don’t really know how many haven been sold there and how many in US/EU.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Actually its a good estimate, US/EU has still sold more based on these numbers with a margin of error for the digital included. A down vote is unnecessary, and I can guarantee US/EU has outsold Japan as we do with most games we both get. MH being one of the few exceptions. I read the article, I was making a point and being excited.

        • Akuosa

You were being excited alright, but the thing is, you said that only 209k were sold in Japan, and there are over 1 million registered copies playing, so… I guess the difference is form other territories is the implication there? While it’s true the japanese aren’t that much into pc games when compared with US/EU, that’s still a pretty huge leap to make considering 209k was refering only to ps3 sales, so you don’t only have the digital ones to take into account. That’s far more a guess based on population numbers and usual sales than any kind of estimate based on these numbers.
