Mighty No. 9 Will Run On Unreal Engine 3

By Ishaan . September 30, 2013 . 9:30am

Mighty No. 9 has hit another stretch goal, with around 30 hours to go in its Kickstarter campaign—the game will now include a support character.

This feature will allow for a sidekick character—who hasn’t been decided upon yet—to swoop in for a limited time and use their powers to help out during times of need.

Should Mighty No. 9 hit the $3.3 million mark by the time its Kickstarter campaign comes to an end, developer Comcept will announce PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Additionally, Comcept have announced that Mighty No. 9 will run on Unreal Engine 3, and have released an early engine test created internally, that was used to test if the engine would provide what the team was looking for. You can watch this below:

Note that the video above uses placeholder assets and animation, and Comcept say it isn’t necessarily representative of what the final game will look like.

7 days of development and this is looking really good, even for a placeholder. Can’t wait for the full version.

  • ragingmerifes

    Looks pretty good.

  • Go2hell66

make it look like guilty gear!

  • Pockystix

aw, was kinda hoping for cellshading, or sprites.

    I can barely make out No. 9. . .

Hopefully it gets more lively and colorful with time.

    • César H. Sandoval

They were never gonna use sprites, they said since the start of the KS the goal was 2.5D.

    • hadjimurad

i like the look, but i do think it would be better for Beck to be a little bigger in frame to be more of a visual focus.

  • NightzeroAX

Youtube comments never fail to amuse me. In any case can’t wait to see the final product.

    • “wow, what a boring looking game and bad preview. there isnt hardly no sounds at all and only one enemy type? i cant believe i backed this, even rpgmaker 2000 has more gameplays than this”

      This is gold

      • British_Otaku

“3D graphics are counter-intuitive to 2D platforming action.”

I’m done. I don’t need to look for more of em after this. >_>

  • Ony

  • Prinnydoom

It was only a couple of seconds of gameplay, but i am impressed. Inafune is really going the distance here.

  • Doesn’t the 3DS not support Unreal 3? I wonder what they have planned for that version, assuming it eventually reaches that goal via PayPal.

    • César H. Sandoval

The portables will be outsorced, so I guess the developer of those may have to scal-down the engine a lot or use another one anyway.

    • British_Otaku

I don’t expect this game to be very demanding, I assume they could have it running on Unreal 2.5 or something and make the games the same regardless, but I don’t know the technicalities.

You can be sure that I won’t touch the portable versions if I get the slightest feeling that they are scaled down in a significant way. >_> At least, the Vita is safe I assume, Rayman Legends and multiple FIFAs aside.

      • InfectedAI

The point is no version of Unreal runs on the 3DS as far as we know. They’d have to port the engine or make their own.

      • JonathanisPrimus

There’s nothing wrong with Rayman Legends on Vita. The missing content was an issue with release dates. It’s getting patched back in.

        • British_Otaku

That is correct, it was just a recent example of the top of my head, not a good one at all in comparison to every FIFA on the Vita being a reskin of the last and none of them holding any sort of parity with the PS3 version despite not being that demanding.

  • J_Joestar

hopefully this video will revitalize interest and help push past that 3.5m mark

  • Learii

    mega man is back XD

  • Luis Camargo

I really hope this is the push Capcom needs for new Megaman games.

    • InfectedAI

All the Mega Man talent is working on Mighty No. 9. I’ve lost all interest in a Capcom made Mega Man game. I’m looking forward to Mighty 9 becoming an awesome franchise.

      • AkuLord3

This…seriously why are people still asking Capcom to make Megaman games…WHEN WE HAVE MOST OF THE TEAM THAT MADE THE MEGAMAN GAMES…right here

        • RichyGaming

Maybe because some people (Like me) like Megaman and his designs. They really do look sick but I’m a sucker for both teams.

          • AkuLord3

I understand that, but design wise…that can be a different say when we have had many different versions of the guy…i don’t see why just can’t think of this as one of them which it technically. Besides Design won’t help much if the game sucks

          • RichyGaming

I like all of ’em though (Even fat Mega man haha.) Even though the Blue Bomber looked like a naked kid with a really tight blue suit wearing navy blue underwear, he was one of my favorites. But without a doubt, X was my favorite design. His games are tough as nails for a beginner such as myself. (Only played Megaman X collection and Megaman & Bass for GBA emulator)
(A little off topic but after a few days I got the final stage or so I think which shows sigma’s face. I defeated that purple guy but I had to stop playing the game for a while when I found out there was more level and bosses.. that’s ridiculous but interesting.)
But that’s true, a game isn’t good by how it looks, but by how it plays. And the people who made those hard level and stages were those same people who are developing Might No. 9, so you’ve got a point there. I hope they give Beck the X treatment but Keiji stated how he thought at some points that Capcom would react to this.

      • Luis Camargo

I also hope Mighty No9 to be an awesome franchise, but why not both ?

I would love to see a new Megaman X or a new Legend game or a new battle network-type game. Capcom still has the talent to produce great games, they just need to use it.

        • AkuLord3

Yeah a new Legends game would be cool OH WAIT (i’m sorry for that…even that made me depressed) though does Capcom really have the talent for that? I say this since they really don’t have many of the creative people left (still some good ones there still though). But so far as it seems, all i see is them throwing it half-ass to an incompetent people and fudging it up. If they prove me wrong someday, that’s great but it probably won’t happen or not for a long time for people to care anymore (especially with their budget).

          • British_Otaku

Capcom’s staff which they get to work on Dragon’s Dogma, E.X. Troopers and Monster Hunter are clearly capable. I would feel sick seeing a MML3 without Inafune, but they have some good people who can develop 3D 3rd Person action games, E.X. Troopers in particular got some backlash for being too similar too soon. >_>

There is also the chance of them calling back Inafune (no idea about the odds, but if The Last Guardian is still getting developed by the director and gets finished I’ll believe in any thing) or contracting companies like Treasure (who are working on Gaist Crusher now).

        • J_Joestar

Well even Inafune has offered to have his new company work with Capcom to finish MML3 in the past. It would be nice if Capcom would take him up on that offer.

        • InfectedAI

All the Mega Man talent has left Capcom and they’re working on Mighty No. 9. Also Capcom killed the Legends series. I have zero interest in another Capcom Mega Man game unless they outsource Legends 3 to be finished by Comcept or something.

    • Ferrick

personally, i really hope they don’t, not after what they did to some of their IPs

  • There’s a new stretch goal with a playable Call stage too!

    • InfectedAI

I doubt it’ll get met, though I hope it will. I just want the 3DS/Vita goal met.

After seeing what ArcSys did with UE3 in GGXrd, I hope the game have a look like this fanmade thing

  • brian
    • JonathanisPrimus

If they felt at all threatened by this they would’ve sent a C&D or started a lawsuit. The truth of the matter is that this Kickstarter has taught Capcom nothing. They knew a Mega Man could sell 50k, because that’s what some of the awful games like Starforce were pushing.

      • brian

I was thinking they wouldn’t feel threatened so much as jealous because this game looks so nice already and it’s gotten a lot of support, etc etc, and they still may take legal action on it since that’d fall in line with a lot of their recent dumb decisions.
Also posted that because it was originally from a video about Mega Man.

  • British_Otaku

Well I guess it can’t be MT Framework, I suppose it doesn’t look bad at all for 7 days of work, I’ve seen games improve immensely with time and Unreal Engine 3 has turned out some nice looking games on top of 2D platformers being un-demanding.

  • Areuto

A perfect name for the last boss in the game should be CAPtin COMmando, It makes destroying him all more satisfying

    • RichyGaming

B-But what did Capcom do to deserve this..?

      • DarthSithZero

Indeed Capcom made such awesome games on the past before went full retard.

    • EX+

And at the end credits they should play the trololol song.
But seriously, maybe this’ll get a fire burning in Capcom. Especially if it’s successful.

      • InfectedAI

After this I honestly have no interest in a Capcom made Mega Man game. Long live Mighty No. 9!

        • ninjabart122

I think it would be interesting if Capcom were to suddenly come out with a new Megaman game near the release of Mighty No. 9

It’s pretty interesting seeing how a bunch of Kickstarters usually get a professional retail counterpart within a few months.

          • InfectedAI

You have any examples? I’d love to see them.

          • I do hope so Capcom indeed releases a new Megaman game. A healthy competition is good for everybody, and a win for fans. Perhaps then, it could be Capcom’s first step towards retribution from the negative publicity they’ve been getting.

    • There already is a real Captain Commando tho

    • Cellsai

He already exists and was made by Capcom for that reason :P

  • Yan Zhao

This looks pretty damn good even for a placeholder tech test.

    • Guest

B-But what did Capcom do to deserve this?

      • ishyg

Nothing. They did nothing, and that is exactly why they deserved this.

      • Erwin MadJelly

Capcom didn’t deserve this at all, because it’s keiji Inafune’s work. He parted ways with capcom

  • EX+

UE3? Awesome. Really can’t wait to get this.

  • Crimson_Cloud

It looks nice, hopefully Beck will have better fluid movement and no stiff jumps. Yeah I know this is work in progress, I’m just saying.

    • Testsubject909

Considering this was done in 7 days and isn’t even an Alpha build…

  • DarthSithZero

I liked how the game looked on the 2D concept screenshots, I’m not a big fan of 2.5D.

    • Kalis Konig

This. The 2.5D megaman games always loked unappealing to me.

  • JonathanisPrimus

UE3? The 3DS version is going to be horrific, and the Vita version won’t be too hot.

  • Max

Hmm, I’m a little surprised by this.
I think it loses a lot of the Megaman feel with this graphic style and gets closer to the many other sidescrolling games on XBox live and PSN.
When I heard Inti Creates was into this I thought it would be closer in style to ZX, but It seems Inafune is still going for the western appeal.

    • ChiffonCake

It’s already been said that the game is not necessarily going to look like this. All of the graphics and animations are placeholders.

    • Zangetsu777

This is just a rough draft that was made in a week the game is not gonna
      look like that.
That video was just showing off the Unreal Engine
We all know this game is going to have “Artistic Graphics” (like Megaman). Not “Technical graphics” (like Mass Effect)

  • Sergio Briceño

They were careful enough to just show a test of an area location and enemy already shown on concept material. And still managed to hype me about it. XD

  • Kalis Konig

…I was under the impression that this would have a hand drawn style due to all the screens that were on the net. my hype has died down a bit.

    • Zangetsu777

this is just a rough draft that was made in a week the game is not gonna look like that. That video was just showing off the Unreal Engine capability.

      • Kalis Konig

No I know.this is not the finalized style. I was looking forward to a completely hand drawn 2D style game like in the concepts though. Of course this is siliconera where anything remotely against popular opinion warrants mass down voting. Unless of course we will actually be getting a 2d game with he unreal engine. 3D megaman game have never appealed to me. I just could not dig the style unfortunately.

        • Testsubject909

          No, this isn’t about Siliconera.

Anywhere on the internet will result in mass downvoting if you’re not of the opinion of the masses. Don’t try and single out a single website for this.

Where did you get the impression that it would’ve been a 2D game anyways?

The art were concept art. Quite obviously set solely for that.

Most of the animated art and whatnot that you saw in the updates were clearly stated as being fan made.

Everything else seemed to hint more towards 2.5D.

Hell, the video preview itself shows 2.5D concept and animation and did so since the Kickstarter began.

Now I for one prefer not to downvote, I prefer to just talk out my disagreement. So I’ll do just that. Look at the downvote not as people disagreeing with you. But rather people wondering why you deluded yourself into thinking it would’ve been a 2D project when everything pointed to a 2.5D project.

        • Aaronrules380

If you actually read the entire page, the faq ALWAYS said it would be a 2.5 d isometric view game

        • Zangetsu777

Hey i know what your getting at. And i understand where you are coming from.
But i was just trying to say that this game will have “Artistic Graphics” not “Technical Graphics”

Honestly i think after its done it will look more like this with some extra shine and polish.(2.5D)

  • I am already impressed and this is just but a placeholder of a test demo. I cannot imagine and am excited already to see what does the refined and polished final product look like two years later.

  • Testsubject909

I’m mainly amused that despite the fact that the video has in all caps big bold lettering taking 1/4 of the screen explaining that this is a rough work, pre-alpha visual test that was done in 7 days.

Some people are already assuming the worst.

  • .:Raphællius:.

    This is too weird…

  • DemonKingAsura

People are cancelling their funding because of this………

Really, guys? Really, do you have to act like an asshat who’s stuck in Nostalgia to accept that it was 2.5D?

    • Testsubject909

      Funny to hear about this.

Because the backing has been at 3,172,838 + 88,000 from Paypal and rising.

Here’s guessing it was just a small group of people who pledged the minimum 5 or 20$.

      So basically nobody worth mentioning.

      • Testsubject909

I said has been because by the time I’ll be posting, it’ll have increased.

Just as I suspected. 3,173,128 now.

  • Aaronrules380

It just reached the next gen console stretch goal

    • Zangetsu777

HELL YEAH PS4 & XONE ARE A GO!!!!!!
