Pokémon X And Pokémon Y Sell Over 4 Million Worldwide In Two Days

By Ishaan . October 15, 2013 . 8:25am

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have sold over 4 million copies in their first two days on the market, worldwide, Nintendo announced this morning. That figure covers Saturday and Sunday in all regions, save for Europe, where most stores are closed on Sundays.

The launch of X and Y has beaten that of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 by over 70%, although that isn’t surprising in the least, given that those two titles were iterative sequels, rather than a brand new Pokémon generation.

On a more interesting note, here are worldwide sales for past Pokémon games, as of March 31st, 2013:

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl – 17.63 million

Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire – 16.22 million

Pokémon Black and Pokémon White – 15.42 million

Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver – 12.67 million

Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen – 12 million

Comparing them to BW2 is kind of useless, since those were generally not as well received, and released way too late.

Although, if they didn’t compare them to BW1 or DP, I have to imagine that it sold less? Or maybe they just wanted to keep the comparison to the closest title.

It’s probably a bit of both. I don’t think it was conceivable for them to do as much as B/W anyway. 3DS itself needs to sell more, in order for that to happen. Gen 7 games will probably give us a better idea of if B/W can be beaten.

      • malek86

Do we know if B/W had a bigger launch than D/P? It should in theory, but in the end D/P had higher sales… so there’s at least that. That said, given how MH4 smashed expectations, I was kinda thinking X/Y could do the same. But I guess being always on a Nintendo platform means that you can’t expect too much a different pattern from usual (sales of D/P and B/W are pretty close overall), unlike MH4.

For all we know, X/Y could sell a lot more than we think, lifetime… unless something like Z or whatever cuts off its legs.

In the case of Di/Pe, it had no competition whatsoever. It was the only new set of Pokémon games for a long time, since after it, they remade Gold/Silver. We’ve seen that older Pokémon titles keep selling even today, so Di/Pe had plenty of time to get to that 17.63 mil. figure.

            If you mean this:

            http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/04/people-are-still-buying-older-pokemon-rpgs/

I don’t think it will. It sold 710k last year, and the rate will only get slower, now that X/Y has been released. I’m not sure it can sell those extra 2 millions it needs.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yeah, so Pokémon may never have another Diamond/Pearl moment ever again, because the frequency of releases has increased since then, too. But I do recall reporting that B/W had the largest launch of any Pokémon to date, yes.

It was a tough month for my wallet but I survived it.

    No regrets.

    But such a backlog.

    • AuraGuyChris

See the bright side. You will always have something to do.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

I have a job and people I relate to; I ALWAYS have something to do regardless.

This just makes it impossible for me NOT to have anything to do.

Or the inability to come up with a truthful excuse otherwise.

    • TheGioG

Can’t say the same for mine… took one hell of a beating after my last 2 Atlus games and hunting down a Xenoblade copy. But buying Pokemon Y? Rest in peace, dear rupee wallet. You shall live on through my next paycheck…

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

ugh i still have rune factory 4 that i need to purchase before im clear

  • Masa

well deserved sales too, as someone who grew bored of the pokemon games years ago i had no interest in this until i saw the trailers, game looks and plays awesome!

  • Niko Sandwich

And Pokemon conquers my life and 4 million others’ once again…

  • Edzo04

now just release a patch letting me walk with the circle pad and take off the damn roller skates and ill be happy. i am shocked that they made the skates forced. movement with the circle pad was so fluid but now i have to skate around way faster than id like… (i know you can walk with the dpad but the dpad sucks)

    • AuraGuyChris

      And this:

Game: Your Fennekin, who got experience from Exp. Share, rose to level 6!

Yvonne: Sweet! Show me the added numbers!

      Game: Nope.

      Yvonne: What.

Game: Do you remember the stats by memory?

      Yvonne: …

Let’s not forget a patch to let us see how much leveled stats for Pokémon out of battle changed.
You can’t just omit that when they finally acknowledge EV training!

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Did EVs change this generation? I used Super Training to max out my Froakies Sp.Atk and Speed, but the stats aren’t elevated at all.

        • Niko Sandwich

Don’t forget EV’s are still granted over time. You only get all of the points (64) at Level 100.

    • Bobby Jennings

Really? it would make sense for the roller blades to be on the analog rather than regular walking don’t you think?

      • Edzo04

they should be toggled. im not saying take them away from the circle pad they just need to be optional. the circle pad is way more comfortable to move around with than the dpad so you should be able to turn them off or on

        • Rytan

D-Pad allows for more precision in my experience. I’m fine with it.

        • Suicunesol

But if they make them optional, then you’re not going to use them. :O

Also, the way walking works with this game, the d-pad is way easier to use. If it wasn’t limited to 8 directions, the circle pad would be a lot easier to walk with.

        • Bobby Jennings

          I understand.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    well, it isn’t that surprising..
    as expected from me

  • Audie Bakerson

But Nintendo is supposed to be doomed! It’s been almost a week since the last time someone said so!

    • Arcana Wiz

      lol, this made my day.

  • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

No surprising, glad its doing well. Enjoying every moment of X version.

  • LM009

Sure looks like the biggest sales go to when the generation is the first console successor(ie rs for gba, dp for ds)

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Well, to be fair, Ru/Sa were the only original games on GBA. Fire Red and Leaf Green were remakes, and both those and Hg/Ss did similar numbers.

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

OK, so given the 4 million figure, I actually think there’s a chance Pokémon may not have outsold MH4′s first week in Japan, because Nintendo had to split their shipment up between four territories. We’ll find out tomorrow.

    • Kurizu208

well we will see by saturday as that will be one full week

  • Ban The Jackass

4 million worldwide? But Monster Hunter reached 2 million only in Japan! Oh wait, what about GTA V?

  • Logeres

Wait, the stores are open on Sundays in Asia and America? You learn something new every day…

    • komiko12

Because there are no reasons to not open them (that I can think of).

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

You really want to know why it sold so well?

    Pokemon-amie

    *jk*

  • Ric Vazquez

    Not surprising, considering it’s pokemon
