More RPGs Need Musical Instruments As Weapons Like Recurring World Of Cratia

While Monster Hunter does technically let one fight with a musical instrument, I personally think we need characters running around with harps and lutes blasting out riffs that blow enemies apart. Kemco are obliging, with a new 2D old-school RPG called Recurring World of Cratia for smartphones.

You’re Haruma, and the basic premise of the game has shrine maiden Cynthia show up and beg you to “Please! Save the world!” So of course we’re just going to drop everything and oblige, since the Demon King comes back every decade or so, and you’re the only one who can defeat him. Along the way, you’ll find yourself picking up allies such as the knight Lamina and badass musician Aimos.

Battles are turn-based but as flashy as the graphics can make them, with the skills you can use coming from various weapons players equip to their characters. There’s also a magic stone enhancement system which allows players to slot in magic stones to alter and enhance their gear.

The Android version is out now, while iOS will have to wait till 2014.

I’d offer Loom, but that’s not so much a weapon (usually anyhow. You can use it to light a fire depending how you play…)

  • RaineNythra

Not an instrument, but music plays a big part in the battles of Ar Tonelico.

    • Arcana Wiz

well. in ar tonelico your best method of inflicting damage it’s a song (less on the third, but let’s pretend that it battle system never happened cause canonnically they continue broken) and we have a character who uses a harp that tunrs in a bow…. and now i want to play AT when waiting for more informations on CIel no surge…..

Johnny (aka Karyl) Shiden does exactly that with his lute in Tales of Destiny PS2.

It’s really crazy how fast Kemco makes games. It seems every 3 weeks there is a new one. Personally I didn’t really like their games. Too much of a rush story and a very sad world map. I rather have a new kairosoft game or a new Baiten Kaitos of course ;)

One has to keep dreaming :)

I think they’ve got a few different dev teams that they’re publishing, hence the output. Still, these games are little more than RPGMaker default grade..

        I know :(
I make better RPGMaker games than this …. not that I ever get further then writing the story and constructing the first arc but you get the point :)

They don’t make horrible games but their games are just bland. My personal opinion is that they are not worthy of the name RPG. But that’s coming from a hardcore RPG fan so maybe I’m a little bit harsh. In essence I don’t like the chance RPG’s need to make to be profitable on ios or android.

    y’all spoony ass bards

  • Aristides

Kemco is awesome! XD they’re the only company people don’t hate for making exclusive hardcore smartphone RPGs.
