That Ain’t Devil May Cry – It’s Sengoku Basara 4

By Eugene . October 18, 2013 . 2:03pm

The best and the worst of Sengoku Basara 4 are coming out of the woodwork with the latest reveal. The above trailer shows off older characters we’ve seen and talked about before, as well as some of the images you’ll get with combination attacks.

We’ve also got news that bad girl and all-around new world weaponry merc Saika Magoichi, Shikoku’s pirate lord Chosokabe Motochika, bad luck magnet Kuroda Kanbei, and naïve/pure/token innocent seer Tsuruhime will be making a return as well. Check out their bunch of screenshots below.

There’s also what appears to be a DLC costume for everyone’s fan favorite Date Masamune that puts him in practice gear (Is that this year’s theme?) and fighting with a wooden boken in the last few seconds of the video.

Sengoku Basara 4 will be out for PlayStation 3 on the 23rd of January next year.

  • Shady Shariest

    This looks very interesting…

  • Unemployment Master

    Of course it isn’t DMC.
Sengoku Basara is Dynasty Warrios. Which is not a good thing.

    • Chogokin

If you think Sengoku Basara is just Dynasty Warriors then you know nothing about the series.

    • MrJechgo

      Yeah, because Sengoku Basara is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much related to Romance of the Three Kingdoms ¬_¬;
      If you wanna compare it to another series, try SAMURAI Warriors next time ¬_¬;;

      • Unemployment Master

I meant they are copies on gameplay aesthetics.
Which means they’re stagnant and boring. To ME.

Thought that with the damn article having DMC in it’s title would be pretty clear that my response, also having DMC in it, would be obvious that the matters discussed would be gameplay.

I tend to forget who comes here in Siliconera. Excuse me.

        • Chido55

I guess you have never played DMC to have that kind of thought before clicking this article even.

        • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Combo videos are nice and all, but if you had actually played the game, hell if you actually looked at a gameplay video, you’d notice the SB3 draws more from DMC than it does the warriors games. Really the only thing Capcom took was the 1 vs 1000 aspect, and turned into a combo based Super Beat Em’ Up game

  • BizarreJelly

Glad Magoichi is back, loved her play style. Hoping they add more of the older characters as playables like Kasuga, though they’ll probably just end up npcs again.

    • Dark Zerato

They should keep all the old casts like DW.

      • MrJechgo

True, but apparently, they’re following some kind of “episodic” content, like all SB games are actual sequels where events are taken into account, where SW games are just retold versions with upgraded content, such as new characters and stages.
Where SW went to tell the majority of the Sengoku period, SB went for a version that is spreaded across multiple games. SB1 covered the time where Nobunaga ruled, SB2 covered when Hideyoshi ruled and SB3 covered the conflict between Ieyasu and Mitsunari; All SW games cover those 3 segments entirely, only to add more characters and stages in each game and/or version.

    • MrJechgo

Oddly enough, they made Toshiie, Matsu and Shingen NPCs, once again…

      • DanteMasamune

Weird thing is that Tenkai (Mitsuhide in disguise) is a PC while Mitsuhide is a NPC. So how does that works?

  • Masa

still prefer DW/SW to this game, SB feels like a clone but just worse combat and characters.

    • Brandonmkii

Okay, you got me. 10/10 would fall for it again.

    • Ferrick
    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

You clearly haven’t actually played the game. They follow the same level style and design, but even though I love the Warriors games, combat and controls are just way too simple. SB actually makes it feel like the characters are all different. They are different due to the Warriors Games much large maps and most strategy based elements, but the Basara series more than takes what Koei had done well, and makes it their own.

  • Warboss Aohd

    ‘Token Innocent Girl’
yup, though da male she endz up likin’ woz pretty funny.

  • 60hz

yo, did that donkey just do what i think it did!?!??! Who needs DmC when you have… DONKEY MAY CRY!

    • MrJechgo

      That’s a deer, not a donkey XD

  • $77496739

    >capcom copies koei
    >”you don’t know anything about the Basara!”
    >koei copies capcom
    >MH clone 0/10 try again

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Toukiden is actually pretty solid game dude. You should give it a shot.

  • Weird Al Yankovic

I’d trade all these characters for a playable Kasuga and Nouhime.

    • MrJechgo

What? Dude, Magoichi and Motochika are just awesome! You can’t go wrong with a gunslinging lady and badass pirate.
Kanbei and Tsuruhime could use some tweaking though. Kanbei is an idiot who just can’t figure out how to break his manacles and Tsuruhime is just downright obnixious, like “schoolgirl-obnoxious”, especially with a music theme that just won’t leave your head XP.

  • Yvonne Tsang

Honestly not feeling the new PCs. The old guys look as awesome as ever though.

  • MrJechgo

    “That Ain’t Devil May Cry”
That would be sick if Dante ends being a guest character though XD
Not to mention that Alistor and Sparda have been used as cameo weapons in the series before. Come to think of it, Ebony & Ivory for Magoichi could be a possibility ;)

    • Dante is in this game, he’s just wearing blue.

      • MrJechgo

I see what you did there ^_^
Although, it only works when you play the game in English XD

  • Spirit Macardi

I’ll admit I’ve never played this series, but in terms of actual real-world history wasn’t Magoichi Saika a guy?

    • gecd

Magoichi Saika is a title for the leader of clan Saika

    • MrJechgo

Yes, you would be correct. However, in SB, “Magoichi Saika” is actually a title given to the clan’s leader. In SB3, for instance, you learn that Magoichi’s real name is Sayaka, but she has been given the title when the previous leader died at the hands of Nobunaga. The current Magoichi, or Sayaka, harbors a strong hatred toward Nobunaga since the previous “Magoichi Saika” was her lover.

      • Spirit Macardi

Oh, that’s a rather fascinating take on it. Sort of sounds like how the Onimusha games made Jubei Yagyu into a title.

        • MrJechgo

Indeed. My guess is that, well, there aren’t many female characters to choose from in the Sengoku period and/or Japanese history. As devs may want to attract female players, or just want to add female characters, that’s a way to do it.

        • Skeptika Crediblus

And also had Magoichi Saiga in it (well, the second one did…)

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

It’s the same historically. Magoichi went to whoever was the leader of the clan at the time, which is why there are several men who held the name Magoichi historically.

  • Riku Athrun

    Where’s my nagamaza ;-;

  • Strid

Nobody would confuse this glorious video game with Devil May Cry, at least not anymore.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

It’s funny how comparing a game with Devil May Cry a year ago was a compliment. Now, it’s basically an insult

      • almostautumn

        An unexceptionally unwarranted insult, yes.

    • MrJechgo

I think pretty much everyone would have grasped that “Devil May Cry” means and will ALWAYS mean “the series with white-haired Dante”.

      • Skeptika Crediblus

That other thing was just some platformer by some third-rate developer.

  • colorblindnightmare

hell yea, rocket pirate! I really love the cast of basara, especially choskabe and saika

  • k.b.a.

oh great… i’m sorry to to say this. i know i shouldn’t complain but… when’s onimusha? i really miss it so much

    • MrJechgo

Dunno, but adding Onimusha-related content, like stages, items and even guest characters such as Soki, would be great though ^_^

      • k.b.a.

i enjoyed onimusha for the full package. the characters atmosphere mechanics and gameplay.sengoku dynasty warriors and the like have never been my cup of tea. i say all of that buy if i get my hands on say ninety nine nights, one piece or fist of the north star i MAY budge on that view

    • Ferrick

after what they did with their recent ips you would still want them to make onimusha ? Sorry, but i would prefer it if it doesn’t get another game
