By Spencer . October 21, 2013 . 12:07am

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z includes characters from the latest Dragon Ball Z movie, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Players can set up a fight with Super Saiyan God Goku and Bills, the God of Destruction. Or create a match with four Gokus against Bills and three other villains because Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z’s fights are almost all four on four battles.

The game also has 360 All-Range Battles where you can fight against Great Ape and other giants. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z comes out in Japan on January 23 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita.

I didn’t continue watching Dragon Ball Z but, did Goku became God in the series?

    • Remlot

      Nope

    • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Not in the anime. He did in the latest movie, though.

      • British_Otaku

You could consider him “God” a lot earlier if the criteria was always being really really strong (look at Kami or Dende). >_>

Considering that he depends on others for the transformation, that an unborn Pan could have done it and he was still weaker below the level of Bills and Whis (not to mention the power scaling that made Vegeta give a better show earlier on)… You can’t really say it’s a “God” more than when he was beating up Piccolo Jr.

        • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

It’s all in the terminology. I’m with you in that the power scaling was off, but it doesn’t change that they only refer to Goku as a God when the other Saiyans will him to be one.

          • British_Otaku

In the terminology, Kami is a God outranked by title by Yama and various Kais then the main cast. All of them are mortal and have no distinct abilities… >_>

Ah well, more reason for people to argue about Goku vs Superman or for the series going on…

          • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Yeah, in Japanese, Kami means God, but in DBZ he’s merely Earth’s Guardian and that’s what I mean by “terminology”. In DBZ, the ranks go from Kami’s position as Guardian (God), to whatever King Yemma’s position is, to King Kai (Lord), to Grand Kai (Great Lord), to Supreme Kai (Lord of Lords) to God. And the funny thing is that the only one to be named using the Japanese word for God is the only one NOT considered to be a God in the series (not living in the “heaven”, that is). So it seems the power scaling isn’t the only thing that’s off in DBZ. Speaking of power scaling, yeah, the main cast are stronger than even the Supreme Kai and could be called gods…

          • British_Otaku

That’s my point, in English, God means God, but in DBZ, Goku was the third strongest character in the movie (even lower if you consider Vegeta better during his Bulma performance), mortal, had no additional abilities like omnipresence (even God/Kami Enel of One Piece does that and Luffy wasted him) on top of being able to punch a little harder.

Depends if you consider “Gods” to simply be strong characters in the series relative to the exposition masters. I know you are thinking ahead using the whole franchise, but at the point where Nappa and Vegeta were announced to be much stronger than King Kai (most powerful character yet more or less), we didn’t think that they were “Lord” status. The Supreme Kais vary in abillity to the point where, you can’t take it as more than a title. Some of the Kage in Naruto are more powerful than others, some of the dead ones make the current ones look weak and so on.

Even if the movie pushed Goku hard, I really would have liked to see a Super Saiyan God Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten or even unborn Pan as the series doesn’t care about the rules much. >_>

    • Nice Boat Quatro

      Yep, basically.

  • s07195

Ahh, Nobuyuki Hiyama-sensei with his hotbloodedness gets me every time.

    • David García Abril

I hope he reprises his role as Link.

Sure, he only makes grunts and yells. But they’re the best grunts and yells ever! lol

      • British_Otaku

Each Link fortunately has a unique voice (even between Spirit Tracks and WindWaker/Phantom Hourglass), so you wouldn’t see him reprise the role outside of remakes of Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask, a direct sequel to those games with the same Link or crossovers which use that incarnation of Link for some reason over Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and the Wii U’s original Zelda.

Hiyama is a favourite of mine, but we aren’t likely to hear him in another original Zelda game or even a spinoff.

  • Kalis Konig

I love how a lot of games based on Anime are actually quite satisfying and continue to grow after each iteration, but DBZ games constantly take multiple steps back. Of course I will save my final verdict for hen it is actually released.

    • InfectedAI

It seems people will always endlessly bash DBZ games no matter what. They definitely released more of the same way too many freaking times. So I expected now that they’re trying something different with 4 v 4 and 4 v Giant battles that people would be happy they’re experimenting with something new. But all I see is more people complaining that it’s still more of the same, not different enough, etc. I’m starting to think absolutely nothing will ever satisfy all these critics.

      • Kalis Konig

Trying something different is fine. The royale battles are the one appealing factor for this game. Other than that it does not seem to do anything BETTER then what other DBZ games have done. By what you are saying no one should bash UT or DBZ Kinect either. DBZ games have been around way to long to constantly be mediocre and take out features left and right that the fanbase liked. Like I said I will be trying this but I won’t let my fanboyism play me for a fool and pretend all is golden with what I have seen and heard of this game.

        • InfectedAI

Oh please, I’m no fanboy. I can’t even remember the last time I watched the show or played a game, but comparing this to the Kinect game is disingenuous. Also saying the royale battles are the only appealing factor makes you sound impossible to please. You’re talking about completely altering the gameplay trying something completely new and different like it’s something completely minor.

I do agree though, that the franchise should have some more epic games by now. Not there isn’t any because there are quite a few, but personally I’d like to play through the entire story exploring the world and having a combat system designed to be more in line with a beat em up fitting of the brand.

  • Kaihedgie

This is just the TGS trailer but in Japanese.

    • Dinoegg96

      + release date

  • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Still Epic way better then that last game they made.

  • TrueDefault

It’s amazing how Dragon Ball is still so popular.

    • fairysun

Dragon Ball will always be popular … until all kids who grew up with the series passed away.

Unless someone resurrect them with Dragon Ball.

      • Shady Shariest

“My wish… Is to resurrect all the people who raised their hands!”

  • isotrex

    Chala! Head chala!!!

    • InfectedAI

It was an instant blast of nostalgia when that song started playing.

  • Tom_Phoenix

    Poor Bills from Accounting…

  • Spirit Macardi

    *notices Broly in the trailer*

Oh man, Vic Mignogna’s going to be pissed when he learns he’ll have to do that voice again for the localized version x3

  • Sardorim

I’m still very angry that they made Super Vegito Pre-Order DLC when he’s a huge part of the Buu Saga.

I also wanted to have SSJ4 Gogeta vs Wiess.

  • Learii

since there 4 goku 4 frieza I wonder if there will be 4 buu too
    maijn buu the fat one
    evil buu the gray one
    super buu
    kid buu

    • Dinoegg96

You can make a team with

      Majin Buu (fat)
      Evil Buu
      Evil Buu (Gohan absorbed)
      Kid Buu

      • Sardorim

Where is my Buutenks and maybe Buuccolo!

  • leingod

I’m still worried about the 4 on 4 battles. Don’t get me wrong, I think that’s a cool feature, but there’s also people who like regular 1 vs 1 better… like me :P

  • Rohan Viajar

My main concern about the game is the balance. A team of super saiyans seems OP if the opposing team has someone like Yamcha.

    • InfernoCommander

Yamcha is the strongest warrior in the universe. no way he could lose. no waaay

    • British_Otaku

None of the games have made Yamcha especially weak except some specific ones when he is lined up against a Saibaman where it is a one hit KO just because it was funny.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnYodooIdks

Chances are the Super Saiyans may be worse characters because they suck at balancing games or simply even with different skills and attributes as they seem to intend to do.

  • Lloyd Christmas

    Budokai 4, where are youuuu?

    • British_Otaku

Infinite World in 2008 was that game.
If you still have a PS2, you can try it out.

If you are hoping for a modern Budokai with all the content in HD and the Tarbles and the Bills and the Super Saiyan Gods, too bad, Dimps are busy making DBZ card games.

  • TheExile285

Looking forward to this. Just wish it had GT Goku :/

    • British_Otaku

Ha! GT Content In A Game Aside From Super Saiyan 4s and Omega Shenron Post 2007?

In all seriousness, I hope they round out the content. I could almost overlook Preorder SSJ Vegito, if we had GT Goku, Arale and DB Goku. The most disappointing thing about the last generation or so on consoles (Ultimate Butoden is packed, even without GT or DB and the 3DS card game has everything) wasn’t just the missing characters from 2007, but the lack of variety in their picks as well.

      • TheExile285

Having everything in this would have been nice. Last DBZ game I played was Infinite World and that had almost everything.

        • British_Otaku

Ah, the Budokai 4 game which was never named that.
I need to get back and play that when I get a PS2 again, I heard it dropped some good things like Dragon Ball’s Kid Goku but overall it’s the most advanced Budokai on a console.

  • Ivan Junior

When you watch the video and see the new content from the new movie, you realize how happy developers are developing this game. Finally something new in this series!

  • Guest

That voice! Akutare! Who voices that!?

    • British_Otaku

Nobuyuki Hiyama. In gaming parts, he is best known for voicing “adult” Link in Ocarina of Time (3D), Majora’s Mask and Smash Bros 64 and Melee though he has voiced many more to the point that in Project X Zone, he ends up talking to himself between Haken Browning (Super Robot Wars OG), Demitri Maximoff (Darkstalkers) and Batsu Ichimonji (Rival Schools).

He has a lot of great roles in anime naturally and is one of the most firey bastards around, unfortunately no roles in Dragon Ball of any sort. If he voiced a playable character, that would be my main. >_>
