Ultra Street Fighter IV Adds Two New Battle Mechanics

By Ishaan . October 24, 2013 . 10:09pm

Capcom have shared new information on Ultra Street Fighter IV, highlight a couple of the changes that you’ll see in the latest update to the Street Fighter IV series. The first is something called “Ultra Combo Double”.

Unlike previous versions of Street Fighter IV, where you could only choose between Ultra 1 or Ultra 2, now you’ll have a third option—the Ultra Combo Double. This will allow you to perform either of the two Ultras, but each one will do less damage than usual.

The second new mechanic is a Red Focus Attack. It strengthens your Focus Attack at the cost of your Super Meter, but it can absorb multiple attacks, unlike the regular Focus Attack, which can only absorb a single hit.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be released in early 2014 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I’m scared that red focus will be ridiculous.

    • CptPokerface

We won’t know for sure until more tests are done but keep in mind that it costs two meters and can still be broken by armor breaking moves.

If someone were to just throw out a red focus as if it was a regular focus attack, someone could jump in, attack then cancel right into an armor breaking move for huge damage. They’ll have wasted two bars of meter AND taken more than twice the normal amount of damage for it.

  • Niyari

well, looks like every character with a counter ultra is going to be using the combo

  • Ikki

Great… I never liked Ultras and Focus to begin with.

  • Go2hell66

red focus sounds awesome, guessing it will work like 3rd strike parries

    • Sergio Briceño

      Like ground parries at least.

  • Slayven19

I’m liking these changes and they are enough to make this feel like a whole new game.

way behind in the news, never knew there was another one coming out but damn……….they sure do milk the crap out of this game.

People really going to buy this, what a scam.

    • Richard N

No worse than multiple versions of GG and BB and NRS DLC.

      • XiaomuArisu

        Its worse

        • Richard N

Not really. Theres been, what, 5 different versions of GGXX2, and only four characters have been added and a handful of “new” songs since Vanilla.

Ultra Steet will have 19 characters added since Vanilla, with no DLC bs either. They messed that up with SFxT, but doesn’t seem like they want to do DLC characters for the main series. While BB comes out of the gate usually with DLC characters, though atleast this time two are unlocakable.

          • Ty Austin

I completely agree. I’ll never understand why on this site, when Capcom does this people scream ‘scam’ in the comments. But when BB/GG does it, people are hype.

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Well Street Fighter is coming with another Street Fighter 4…since 2009, Blazblue has had 2 sequels (Continuum Shift and Chronophantasma) and 2 updates.

        • Ty Austin

You could pretty much consider them all ‘updates’ as opposed to sequels. With sequels in the fighting game genre, there is usually an audience and community around the older game (people still playing ST and 3S.) Whereas with GG/BB, everyone plays the latest version only (check the dustloop forums, they simply make threads on what has changed from the older version instead making a whole new section.)

Not to mention, every sequel/update BB/GG receives is overpriced for what you get. At least Capcom charges reasonably and gives you a decent amount.

    • AzureRyuujin

Is it truly a scam if you really like the games or are competetive?

Sure, I’d like them to release SFV. But also know that every Street Fighter has gigantic mechanical overhauls compared to the other games. I don’t know if one would treat SF Alpha as this or not but from That and II to III and III to IV, the changes were generally pretty big.

  • hazelnut1112

Why is there a Marvel vs Capcom 3 cabinet set up next to the USFIV one?
Are they trying to hint at something else?
    Probably not, it’s just there.

  • Vesperion

2 ultras eh?………Zamgief confirmed for top tier

    • MrJechgo

T.Hawk and Hakan end up with both a grab and an anti-air and Gen ends up with 4 Ultras total.
Zangief just gets a grab and an air-to-air grab.

  • Judgephoenix

I have no clue why people are complaining you do not have to buy this I believe if you already have super street fighter 4 you just have to update the game…… Only one you had to toss was SF4 version 1. Again like I said a few months back what happened with this game was fine since it was one of the 1st time they did it on this Gen. Now any other game after that like Dogma, MVC3 and a few others should not have been redone.

    • pressstart

Sorry, you’re wrong. They have a gun to their head that’s screaming for them to buy the latest update or gadget.

  • MSJ

lol look at all these jackasses in them comments

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Street fighter 2 still has the most updates and releases, Champion Edition,Hyper Fighting, Turbo, The World Warrior,The New Challengers , World Warriors Card Game, Super Street Fighter II Turbo / Super Street Fighter II X – Grand Master Challenge ,Hyper Street Fighter II,Turbo HD Remix but 4 comes in close.

  • leingod

I like the two ultras thing… I’ve hated to be forced to choose moves ever since SF3.

  • MB_cl

No unblockables!? How I´m supposed to play El Fuerte now!? T_T

Glad to see all other mechanics though!

  • Weaponsgradenothin

Two Ultras? So you mean Hakan will actually be VIABLE now?

  • Strongarm Thunderbeard

I wonder how much super is the red focus going to use. No meters on that part of the video.
