Bravely Default Developer’s Tower Defense RPG Hits 5 Million Downloads

By Ishaan . October 30, 2013 . 10:00am

Bravely Default developer Silicon Studio announced this morning that their free-to-play tower defense RPG, Fantasica, has reached over 5 million downloads worldwide.

Fantasica is a blend of the tower-defense, role-playing and card-collecting genres, and has art drawn by Hideo Minaba—the art director for Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy XII. The game is available for iOS and Android devices through DeNA’s Mobage service, and you can learn more about it here.

“It is very gratifying to see the continued successful growth of Fantasica,” said Takehiko Terada, CEO of Silicon Studio. “It was only three months ago that we surpassed four million downloads and it’s a great accomplishment to see our community grow to over five million users today.”

“We are focused on delivering more compelling online content in the near future as our development team continues to focus on making Fantasica one of the best online mobile games.”

Wow, those screnshots are nostalgia-rific. I never really appreciated how much Hideo Minaba contributed to the look and feel of those old Squaresoft games until now.

yeah mobile games, especially localized Japanese mobile games, tend to fall under my radar…they don’t seem to be publicized much

I tried it out. It’s pretty good, but the menus are cluttered with all kinds in-app purchase kinds of crap and clashing colors.

    Game looks crappy.

I like the concept and that’s a HUGE playerbase. I’m working on a TD game too (http://www.towerstorm.com), main focus is on multiplayer team battles so it’s really cool to see how many fans of the genre there are.
