Heavenly Sword Movie Gets A Trailer, And It Looks Just Like The Game

By Ishaan . October 30, 2013 . 11:29am

Sony have shared a look at the upcoming CG Heavenly Sword film, scheduled to debut in spring 2014. The film will be released digitally worldwide, and will also see a theatrical release in certain regions.

Based on the 2007 PlayStation 3 launch game by Ninja Theory, Heavenly Sword tells the story of Nariko on a quest for revenge against King Bohan, to avenge her clan. Nariko uses the Heavenly Sword to aid her on her quest, but as the weapon isn’t meant to be wielded by her, it sucks away at her life all throughout.

The Heavenly Sword movie will use existing assets from the PlayStation 3 game, production studio Blockade Entertainment reveal. Blockade add that a positive reception to the film at the Cannes Film Festival resulted in multiple buyers interested in releasing the film theatrically in their markets.

I miss this game I wish there was a 2nd game

    • TrueDefault

It’s a shame it flopped. The characters were dang wacky, the expression and voice acting were so good, and that title music too.

If this movie does good it there’s a chance of another game.

Nariko my favorite crimson haired lady after Fairy Tail’s Erza. Hopefully they made a sequel of the movie.

    • Anthony Birken

I include shana in my count~

  • Pdugna

Quite surprising they are doing his movie considering how the game sold. Must be because they just used the already created assets….now just to direct the movie.

Yeah, I don’t get it either.

  • Ryudo9

The game was terrible. Can’t imagine this CG film be any better.

    • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Yeah, don’t get why they’d do a film based on a game that sold poorly, is like 6 years old, and very few people even played.

      • subsamuel01

It sold poor because it was released during the PS3 sales drought so a lot of people just passed on it.

  • Mace

Can’t wait to see Kai in it.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Wait whaaat? Why is this getting a movie? Shoulda done a sequel

Hopefully this will be free to PSN PLUS members

  • British_Otaku

Alfred Molina is going to be in it, hmm…

I guess I’m glad that it looks like the game anyway, but I hope they get to work on a sequel and maybe I’ll give the full game a try someday.

Should’ve been a anime, I mean if Halo and Mass Effect can have it why can’t Heavenly Sword have a anime movie.

    • DCBlackbird

I don’t know this game had some amazing aesthetics that in my opinion traditional animation cannot translate.

      • https://twitter.com/mikedo2007 mikedo2007

Watch the anime: Afro Samurai, Basilisk, and Ninja Scroll and you tell me how Heavenly Sword can’t be like that. Hell, I even thought God of War, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone can get good anime anthology adaptation.

        • DCBlackbird

It’s not about the aesthetics of designs but more the aesthetics of motions and perspectives. One thing CG does so well is allow the characters to move more naturally unlike in 2d where the movements are stylized and sometimes so rapid it looks like brush strokes. One example is in the beginning of heavenly sword there is this dynamic sequence where you must slide on a massive knotted rope while the enemy is cutting them down. If they ever did a sequence like that in 2D it would just be a blue background with wind lines.

I really don’t know how to explain for this but it looks underwhelming. Especially for being a CG movie you think it could have looked better. Then again, this is Ninja Theory.

    • Nyanmar

Exactly what I thought. At times, it looks like an early 2000′s CGI movie. The worst part to me wasn’t even the choppy animation throughout, it was 0:45 and how her hair was animated. That’s dipping below the 2000′s straight to the late 90′s, haha.

But yes, it is Ninja Theory after all. You’d have to consider how much of a budget they could allocate to this project.

Man i hope this means a HS sequel is on the works.

  • TheDarkEmpress

Okay…yeah….this seems like a desperate ploy to milk a dead franchise….Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Heavenly Sword, it was an absolute blast to play regardless of it being a total God of War knockoff…who cares? But this…? This looks like they just took all of the cutscenes in the game and spliced them into a movie….Because alot of those are AWFULLY familiar….Seems like a pretty half-hearted way to bring attention to the series….it’s like they want it to fail all over again.

  • Vash bane

never finished the game (god that motion control part got on my nerves) so I don’t know the story (and I forgot all about this game til now lol) she’s a deity?

  • artemisthemp

So can we expect a Heavenly Sword 2 soon?
