Is Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Getting An HD Re-Release?

By Ishaan . October 31, 2013 . 10:00am

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon made a curious tweet last night, which makes it sound like NetherRealm Studios might be working on an HD re-release of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Take a look at his tweet below.

When asked by a fan if Superman and Batman would perhaps make cameos as playable characters, Boon replied, “Playable cameos in what game?”

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, unlike most other Mortal Kombat games, isn’t a fighter. It’s a third-person action game starring Liu Kang and Kung Lao. One can also unlock Sub-Zero and Scorpion as playable characters.

Sorry but he clearly seems to deny it, and if anything is laughing at the possibility.

    • Dsvkb

I disagree. Why would he just wind people up like that if he wasn’t working on this? It’s not like it was a bad game that deserves to get laughed at if it got an HD remake.

  • John Diamond

So if some guy from square enix tweeted a final fantasy 7 game guide does this mean we’re getting a ff7 remake?

    • Nice Boat Quatro

Didn’t your read “Do they think we’re doing an HD version to download … um.. or something.”

  • artemisthemp

Never heard of Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

    • Nice Boat Quatro

Try it, try it, try it, try it, try it!

    • Kaihedgie

It’s the one Mortal Kombat adventure game that people actually liked

If you ignore the story that is.

It’s a 3D beat-em up game that takes you through the entirety of Mortal Kombat II and you have Liu Kang and Kung Lao to chose as playable characters though you can unlock Scorpion and Sub-Zero as well. Controls are pretty great and it even added the useful ability to fight off several enemies at once through “Multi-Directional Kombat”, basically allowing you to backhand someone who is trying to smack you from behind for instance. Many of the Fatalities are remakes of old classics while throwing in some new ones. Brutalities also came back, but as a super mode.

But uh…if you actually cared about the story and lore of Mortal Kombat, then skip the cutscenes.

May try it if, they release a HD version

      • Göran Isacson

About that “multi-directional Kombat”, is it in any way similar to the Arkham-series style of combat? If you have played them, that is. If you haven’t, those games usually have Batman surrounded by multiple enemies and he can attack several of them by simply leaning the left stick in their direction and pushing either an attack button, a counter button or a stun button. Was it something along those lines, or something completely different?

        • Kaihedgie

It’s pretty much as you described. To my knowledge, Shaolin Monks was the first ever video game to do this, so it’s quite an innovative feature.

          • Göran Isacson

That IS interesting. Makes you wonder if the Arkham devs peeked at this game, or if it just happened to turn out that way.

          • bob

it’s wayyyy better than the arkham series -imo – in the sense that it requires more “skill”. It has a combo system, and you dodge or block incoming attacks, as opposed to the arkham series cheap counter system.

Ed Boon is know to be a troll. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

It obviously means they are making a HD rerelease of Mortal Kombat… Mythologies Subzero!!

They couldn’t get the original reels from the FMV sequences so Sub-Zero will be played by Nicolas Cage.

  • doubleO7

Well, I’d buy it if it turned out to be true.

  • BizarreJelly

    Altoids, anyone?

  • Keiji Johnson

Ohh please, please, PLEASE let this be true!! Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is the one MK game that I have been wanting to play out of all the others besides the reboot. I have seen footage of this game on Youtube and I have been searching everywhere for a used copy but to no avail. So an HD remake of this will be an instat-buy for me with out a doubt! It would also be cool if this was an cross-buy title so I can play this on the go.

    • Niceneasy92

For your sake then, I hope they do make it. It was pretty awesome. Especially with a partner.

  • Keko

It’s happening! Mortal Kombat: Special Forces HD confirmed!

  • leingod

Shaolin Monks is arguably the most fun beat ‘em up game of the past generation. An HD release would be freakin’ sweet… a sequel, even better!

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

It’s a great game but sadly it came next to the mammoth that we know as Go9d Of War so of course people ignored it. Which is a shame since it was awesome and the co-op was just incredible.

Ed Boon is such a troll!

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. But where does this stand in canon, both in regards to the old canon and the new reboot? Would they want to go back to it now that there’s a new story in town, or would they do it just because they think it would be fun?

    • Kaihedgie

It takes place durin’ MKII, but because of events that happened in the story, it’s best regarded as an alternate version.

  • Sardorim

So… Shaolin Monks 2 may be in the works down the line? =D

  • Yan Zhao

Shaolin monks was so fun. It was such a random experiment but it somehow worked out so well. I wish Netherealm would make a sequel, going off with the success of MK9.
