Sony Teases A Possible Return Of The PocketStation

By Sato . November 1, 2013 . 3:01am

If you remember Sony’s PocketStation it might be because of Final Fantasy VIII and the Chocobo World mini-RPG. This game was played on a Japan-only PsOne memory card peripheral with a LCD screen. Other games like SaGa Frontier 2, Tales of Eternia, and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne supported the accessory in Japan. Sony recently uploaded a mock-news report video with what appears to be a tease for a possible return of the device.

The video starts out with reporters talking about a “mysterious truck” that will pass by the road. It doesn’t take long until a white truck appears with the word “Top Secret" marked on the side and a PocketStation style pixel-art Toro on the back.

After following the truck in reporter-like fashion,  they make the assumption that it could possible be a teaser of some sort. Just in case you’re wondering why they suddenly start looking at sweets, it was their way of not looking suspicious as they followed the Toro mascot.

Once the mysterious truck reaches its destination, the Toro mascot is seen placing a sign by a building. The sign reads: “November 5, 2013; there will be a big announcement regarding PocketStation.”

After a dramatic conclusion, the reporter says “Yep, it’s a teaser notification.”

Those random cutaways near the end got me laughing. Well, only four days away. Shouldn’t be that long of a wait to hear what is it about…

  • Tom

Cool! I always wanted a PocketStation! And a PS2 that can run my Final Fantasy VIII. Too bad they didn’t put the Chocobo mini game in the PSN version.

    Okay here’s my speculation:

They’d be mad to make new hardware. So, instead, it is software.
An app for iOS and Android.

It’s a companion app to a game that is being developed by Japan Studio right now, to coincide with the launch of PS4 in Japan. The companion app allows users to play with Toro on the go, and see their interactions reflected in the PS4 game the next time they load it up.

In short: mobile app for next-gen Toro Station.

  • FF8 HD? With Pocketstation bonus? Yes Please.

got it played it its bs. you basically got a miner dude with a pickaxe . each push of a button is a pickaxe strike.u could go to school, push endlessly a button(like the triathlons in gta5) during class and hook it up to your ps1 to transfer everything he escavated (swords, bows etc….) to your save. the game is NOTHING like te first saga frontier that was so good, the mini game is repetitive…MINING BS.

    • Renaldi Saputra

I remember the pocket digimon world series which you can port the save files to digimon world 2. sadly those pocket-digi series weren’t localized so we only get world 2 without the option: port save file

ahh also the digimon medley and digimon park

ANOTHER game supported by the poket station was sfz3: train your character during his world tour. of course alll of this content was scrapped for the us and eu like rival schools1 bonus cd with mini games and a ‘spend one school year with one of the heroes at their school’ very nice customized character making mode.
