Hello, PlayStation Vita TV

By Spencer . November 4, 2013 . 12:28am

While Japan isn’t getting PlayStation 4 this year, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan will release a new console for the holidays. PlayStation Vita TV runs select Vita titles (digital and retail!) like God Eater 2 and Danganronpa on your TV. It looks like some developers are patching their games to support PS Vita TV too. The 9,480 yen ($95) device also plays PSP games and PsOne titles.

Sony is also positioning PS Vita TV as a digital media player since the device can play videos from Hulu as well as local providers like Tsutaya TV and NicoNico. The snazzy little device can also be used for PS4 remote play if you want to play Knack or Infamous: Second Son in another room.

PlayStation Vita TV will be available on November 14 in Japan.

I’m making grabby motions, but it isn’t working…

I sure hope someone tests it out for it’s regional capabilities, though, in the meantime. I imagine it’d be region-free, but it’s good to check.

  • d19xx

Too bad Gravity Rush isn’t compatible. Would love to play it on a big screen.

    • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

I feel like Gravity Rush will be, eventually. Probably when the DS4 is available in Japan, they might try to patch things with the game.

      • d19xx

It would be nice if it do get that patch, but I doubt it. Sony will likely just push for GR2.

        • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Who knows, I just feel like they wouldn’t ignore a first-party game like that. Especially when it’s presence would sell more PSPlus accounts.

    • Go2hell66

i’m sure gravity rush 2 will be

      • d19xx

I’m positive it will be and all games from here on will likely won’t overdo it with Vita gimmicks if they want them to be compatible with the Vita TV.

        • http://gentlerobot.com/ Gentle Robot

How dare they use features everyone paid for!

          • jujubee88

How dare people dare to dare dare dare!

            HOW DERP A ADERP DERP

      • Naux

Hmm, come to think of it, that was also a thing, wasn’t it?
        Time to hype.

        • jujubee88

Freedom Wars and GR2 are getting a lot of hype, but Oreshika 2 is just on the horizon (for Japan) and I’m uber hyped about that.

Old school JRPG action in feudal japan with a cool art design. YES!

    • Arrngrim

I heart your avatar, I’m sure that’s from the cover of a doujinshi? :D

  • malek86

I have a (very faint) hope they will allow you to use more than one account with this. If they do that, they might have a purchase from me. If not, I can easily pass.

    • saxophone15

That’s my hope as well. It’s also my hope that any functionality the Vita TV receives will automatically apply to the regular Vita. I think you can see where I’m going with this…

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

For such a small thing it has too many plugs

    • erapago

You’re right. They should remove two of the three: power, video output or ethernet.

      Wait a minute….

    • MrRobbyM

Why is that a bad thing? Do you want less capabilities?

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        I’d just get a Vita :p

Definetly Sony to the bone. Multimedia feature-su out the arse.

Can you use a DS4 with this?

        • jujubee88

Yes. DS3 at launch. DS4 patch in early 2014.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            DS3 is garbage.

          • jujubee88

I’m sure a ps3 complaint bluetooth controller would work with vtv. You’d have to have the hardware to test it, though.

And I wouldn’t really know if ds3 is really garbage, I haven’t gamed on any console in years. :)

  • lunarsoul01

I’m gonna pick this up from the store day 1, with god eater.

    • jujubee88

      Nice. You live in Japan?

      • lunarsoul01

        Yeah

  • Chris Yuen

    I’ll never have a cute Japanese girl cheering me on when I play God Eater 2. ;_;

    • Lemski07

      I feel u

    • Ric Vazquez

      Same feels here bro

    • jujubee88

Wow. Judging by the amount of agree’s, I think this girl has a future in modeling/advertising. XD

      • SuperSailorV

testament to this fact is the blind eye everyone’s turning to her horrendously mangled teeth. shes super cute though

  • Lemski07

damn I’m very hyped on that GE2 I hope they implement online adhoc.

  • Naux

Did that trailer just promote the PS Vita browser?
    I lol’d

    • jujubee88

iirc, the VITA browser the highest rated browser (onhtml5 test) for a dedicated gaming device out today.

So, let’s not speak lowly of the VITA browser when $h*ts bad everywhere. lol

      • BlackC#Bro

        “On a dedicated gaming device.”

Unfortunately, most people have smart phones in their pockets which has chrome, so it’s still pretty laughable.

The only competition for it is the 3ds for petes sake.

        • jujubee88

Huh? I’m talking about all console’s+hh’s. The VITA browser is the best.

The VTV will have a better browser than my smart TV even.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            The WiiU’s browser> Vita’s browser.
            WiiU can use PDF’s

          • ishyg

With the Reader App though, Vita TV will be able to use PDFs too I think.

          • jujubee88

So can VITA. You just need to go through Google drive.

Also, why view PDF’s on a gaming device? I guess tutorials but most are on youtube these days (which all modern devices can play)

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Reading Comics on your television
Im just making the point that the WiiU browser is smooth as butter and highly functional, the dual screen set up makes it a joy to use and control

          • BlackC#Bro

Sorry, Google Chrome for tablets stomps the Vita browser.

  • Darkbeat

I’m actually most psyched at the premise of playing PSP games on the big screen. I know you can connect your PSP, but only the Go supports Dual Shock controllers, but I can’t find it anywhere.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

With the progression of PPSSPP (assuming you have a strong enough computer), that isn’t really all that exciting anymore.

      • D H

Y’know, a lot of us like playing our games on the actual machines, and not through dubious means…

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Well playing PSP games on the Vita TV isn’t playing it on “the actual machine” since that would be a PSP, and emulators don’t automatically mean piracy.

          • D H

Mhm, I’ll give you the first point. However, emulators by design mean not playing them on the actual hardware, and therefore quite likely introducing some kind of change. I mean, it’s really only rather recently that we’ve achieved so-called “perfect” Super Nintendo emulation, and even that requires a ridiculously overpowered computer for what it does. Most of the more popular emulators include things like speedhacks and whatnot, and as far as I was aware, PPSSPP doesn’t play music or video files, kinda defeating the point of playing on it.

Also, sure, emulators don’t automatically mean piracy, I get that. I can also understand the benefits of such things. However, you’re crazy if you honestly think 98% of the people using them aren’t using them for piracy-related reasons. And I understand that as well, as it’s been notoriously slow getting the older games up on actual legit networks. But still… the point of my post was I’d much rather play the games on their actual hardware, NES/whatever included. As for it being a Vita and not a PSP… the control method is still relatively the same, so I kinda count it, even though I really shouldn’t. So, yeah, like I said, I’ll give you that point.

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

Some sort of change? Uh no. Its an emulator, as in it emulates the source. Any other change is simply an option that the user has. Plus, I never said emulators are playing on the actual machine so I’m not sure what your point is.
And your 98% pretty much came out of nowhere.

I never said anything you prefer was wrong. I’m simply saying that with PPSSPP, its not that exciting to play PSP games on the big screen. Its been done before – for years.

          • M’iau M’iaut

            D H. – Fitzpatrick

Let’s end the talk here please. Emulator talk too easily goes into an endless circle. Plus it is off topic. Thanks.

          • D H

Some sort of change, yes. Emulators aren’t perfect. Many of them, including SNES9x and ZSNES, both of which are hugely popular, do not emulate many games “perfectly”. They simply do not have the infrastructure to do so, and utilize things such as speedhacks or other methods to run games at full speed. That’s why there was such a big deal when bSNES came out, with it’s “perfect” emulation that requires a much, much more powerful machine in order to play a game at full speed. The change may not be visible or audible to the end-user, depending on how well it is implemented for that particular game, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is there. It also seems to be the major reason many fan-translations or hacks don’t run on the actual hardware, but run just fine on said emulators; they are simply built with these methods in mind.

Also, sure, the 98% number is from thin-air. But honestly, tell me how many people you know that use emulators, myself included, that don’t have ROMs or ISOs for games they don’t, and never have, owned? Old or not, that’s still piracy; I’m not condemning anyone for it, at least not on anything PS1 or earlier that’s not available on a legitimate network of sale, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t.

      • ddh819

does it work well now? last time i looked at it, only a couple games worked

  • Chido55

Soul Sacrifice will be so glorious on big screen <3

  • Aristides

Damn it! Slapping the screen with money isn’t working!!! …perhaps the disc drive… or the air vents…

  • Amagidyne

I was actually just thinking how I’d love to be able to play Dangan Ronpa on a tv screen, so this is pretty cool.

I’m hoping it’s either region free, or set to make an appearence in other territories.

    • Arrngrim

I was thinking how awesome Persona 4: Golden will be on my 50″ TV with this thing. :) IF it’s compatible for that game and IF we can get it operational here in NA.

  • Warren

Well im going to ask a silly question but if i import this will it be possible for me to play it in the US?

    • Tatsuya1221

Games will still probably be region free, don’t expect the web services like hulu to work well though.

Honestly i’d just wait, sony themselves were surprised by the amount of people in the west who want vita tv, so they may see it as a way to make the vita take off in the west, so it’s pretty likely we’ll get the vita tv sometime in 2014.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I want it……I really hope it hits state side or I will have to buy a Vita slim with HDMI cables

    • ddh819

are you talking about a modified vita?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

isnt the Slim going to have a HDMI port like the psp slim had a AV port?

        • popo123

nope it will not have an hdmi port. That’s why they’re releasing Vita TV.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            you saved me.

  • AuraGuyChris

I bet the people who spent $400 dollars on a Vita capture card feel stupid right about now.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      “for youtube!”

    • jujubee88

The capture card has 100% compatiblity, where as VITA TV is still murky.

Though, I get your point. Not sure why the person who discovered the mod is charging so damn much or monopolizing the information on how to do it. Or am I missing something here? Why’s it cost so damn much? >.>

      • KuroNathan

if its like the 3ds capture it involves a lot of hardware and not-so-easy soldering which if done by an amature could mess up the system

        • jujubee88

I’m an amature, and if I screw up a VITA doing the manual solder hack by myself than I could just buy a used one on cowboom.com for around 100 bucks.

I bet it would cost about 10-50 dollars so long as I already have access to the soldering station and other (relatively) low priced components and wires. And I would need to research the soldering layout, of course.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised more engineers (like the one that founded this mod) aren’t looking at the methods used and are than deploying it themselves (to have home made VITA’s with video out).

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

    I don’t want a Vita. I do want a Vita TV. SCEA please….

    • TheExile285

Typo? This post doesn’t make any sense….

  • BlackC#Bro

When she said with such a happy expression “look look, look how small it is!” it kinda turned me on. What is wrong with me.

  • TheExile285

Sony would use a really cute girl to advertise this. Bastards…. >:3

  • Monterossa

At least the Asian version will be available at the same time. so English menu is kinda confirmed and importing it from Hong Kong will be a lot cheaper than Japan.

  • Hinataharem

I know it would be silly, but if you have a Vita, I wish you could hook it up to this thing, so at least games like Gravity Rush can be played. I like to show my friends games, and I wouldn’t mind not being able to see it.

  • Jirin

I love the idea of being able to play Vita games on a big screen but I don’t like that word ‘Select’. What does ‘Select’ mean? Most or a few? Does ‘Select’ include the ported JRPGs I would be mostly using a Vita for were I to buy one?

Just sayin’, I bought a PSP strictly for games like Legend of Heroes and Growlanser, and because I also had a video out cable it was a great purchase.

    • Gaardus

Select means that games that require the trackpad or touchscreen will not be compatible, due to the lack of trackpad and touchscreen. The compatibility list may or may not expand as the Dualshock 4 becomes available.

      • Jirin

So that probably means any XSEED ports will be compatible, good.

  • http://www.staticshin.com/ Akshat Jiwan Sharma

It would have been amazing if they could have found a way to add support for umd playback. Could have given a new life to some old psp games.

  • yomachaser
