Xseed Will "Do What They Can" About Localizing Corpse Party: Blood Drive

By Ishaan . November 12, 2013 . 1:40pm

Xseed have been been bringing the Corpse Party series of horror RPGs over to the west for some time now, but haven’t announced plans for the next game, Corpse Party: Blood Drive, which is slated for release in Japan in 2014.

Over on their Facebook page, a fan asked Xseed if they could “plz for the love of god” localize Blood Drive in 2014, and an Xseed representative responded: “You’re preaching to the choir, but that’s not our decision alone to make. Will do what we can, though.”

Meanwhile, another fan asked about Xseed publishing Game Center CX: Arino in District 3 for the Nintendo 3DS. The response to this request was less positive. Xseed replied: “Nobody would be happier than us to publish it, but our bank would cry…”

Finally, Xseed also reiterated that a physical release for the PSP version of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter wouldn’t be possible.

In response to that particular request, they replied: “Sorry, but that’s just not in the cards for this title. Releasing a PSP game in mid-2014 even as a download-only title was risky enough as it was, since from a business perspective doing PC only was the smarter move, but still [got] a PSP release approved somehow so that we didn’t leave the original supporters of the first game on PSP hanging.”

  • Epitome

Gonna buy this along with the others that are on the store hopefully 1,2 and 3 is there. After playing the demo of evolution I think I am in love even though I think I am stuck.

  • Otoya

Man, please localize~~~~ Really want to play it. T_T

  • Nas

physical or not were all greatful that TITS:SC coming.

    Much love XSEED.

    • Pyrotek85

Yeah I can’t blame them for not wanting or being able to do the PSP version at this point, the series just came along too late.

    • Yep–would be happy enough getting it on PC, but getting it on PSP so I can play it on my Vita is fantastic. Sure hope we get part 3.

    • NTaiyokun

When you really think about it, Trails has the worst acronym ever.

      • Shippoyasha

Best, NTaiyokun. TiTs is the BEST acronym.

  • Zeether

If they’re not localizing GCCX3 I will be SO ANGRY BEYOND BELIEF. We deserve it now because the fanbase is more established than before. If they can’t do it then it’s gonna be “beg Namco/G.REV” time.

    • Armane

It was always beg Namco/G.REV time though. There was little chance of XSEED localising GCCX3, even as an eShop title, and even considering the larger Western GCCX fanbase. No need to be angry at anyone.

    • I agree that it sucks a lot, but they lost a ton of money on the first game! I’d rather have GCCX3 than anything, I think, but it would be laborious to localize. I want to think that a digital-only release could meet with success, but it would be a gamble to even break even. :(

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Dude, come on. It’s not XSEED’s fault. Even if GCCX has a bigger western following than it did 4 years ago, it’s still extremely niche.

Tragic, yes, but you don’t ‘deserve’ anything from XS.

      • Zeether

But it’s even MORE of a kick in the junk because the 3DS is region locked! I know it’s not XSEED’s fault but I’m really angry MORE than ever now because I’d have to buy another $200 console just to play the game and then fumble through Japanese menus! I’m VERY close to banging on Namco Bandai’s doors about this.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

I feel ya B. Unlocalized dreamboats is part of the reason why I’m learning the language.

  • TheExile285

The fact that Trails in the Sky SC is coming at all is good enough for me. I’ll buy the PSP version to play and the Steam version just to support the series.

Interesting that we still have NO info on this new Corpse Party even though it was originally set for a late 2013 release in Japan. Maybe it will be shown at Jump Festa :V

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

      Maybe because of this? http://corpseparty.wikia.com/wiki/Corpse_Party_2:_Dead_Patient

They’ve only released the first volume and my guess is that they’re probably thinking of swtiching and/or adding plattforms like the 3DS or the Vita to increase sales. The CERO Z rating for one of the bundles that came with the game and I think an OVA probably didn’t help move copies. AFAIK it’s basically a japanese AO rating so trying to sell that is probably hard.

      • DyLaN

Isn’t the team developing/publishing DP is Grindhouse while 5pb doesn’t seem like it have involvement with it?

        • FlamingFirewire

Yes, I thought while Grindhouse was doing DP (Corpse Party 2), 5pb was developing the Vita-exclusive follow-up to 5pb’s Book of Shadows written by TeamGrisGris/Grindhouse, Blood Drive – which is apparently the last story in the Heavenly Host Elementary saga.

  • Werty18

Typo in the beginning, do your best XSEED!

  • ArOne

Why are psp releases such a hard sell when done on digital when the vita is able to play them? The vita needs some software but I don’t see digital psp releases hurting it. I know the psp was kinda dead on arrival in the west for the most part but managed to build a decent library. I’m just still a bit bitter about not getting Makai Kingdom PSP so I can have all my NIS games on the go.

    • TheExile285

Because PSP isn’t an actively supported system in the West anymore and most Vita owners are gonna look for Vita games to buy, not PSP.

Us getting the PSP version of Trails SC is XSEED and that translator group they hired being EXTREMLY generous.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Noooo all the otome games on that system noo why did we start getting more localize opportunities now

        • DyLaN

All dat PSP RPGs and VNs ._. Oh well.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

no no don’t remind, i can’t take it

  • CirnoTheStrongest

I guess Anthology is completely out of the picture…too bad it was really fun

  • Ran-san

The wait for corpse party related news is killing me.

Though on the bright side can’t wait for Trails in the Sky Second Chapter to be released. I’ll be grabbing the PC version for sure as I need more games on my steam account :P

  • Hmm, Corpse Party 2 didn’t really do it for me (although I loved the first). Xseed is so small that whenever they localize one thing, I always wonder what we’re missing out on as a result. Their parent company makes them localize some kind of crappy stuff. I wish they could just choose all their own projects.

    • Detrimont

hasn’t only the first chapter of 2 come out though?

      • I guess I don’t know!

        • Detrimont

ok, you meant BoS, i meant Dead Patient

          • Dead Patient is part 2 of BoS? I’m totally confused. Guess I need to read up. I didn’t like BoS as much as the first one.

          • Detrimont

dead patient is the second game in the franchise, not overall… it has nothing to do will the heavenly host series… but only the first chapter of Dead patient has been released so far… (just to repeat, it has nothing to do with BoS)

          • Okayyyyyyy, well Wikipedia says the Corpse Party we got was one thing, and that Book of Shadows was the sequel to it. So then Dead Patient is a two-parter, and you’re saying that is Corpse Party 2, despite Book of Shadows apparently being a sequel to Corpse Party?

          • Detrimont

    • Brandonmkii

Book Of Shadows isn’t CP2. CP2:Dead Patient is a pc game.

      • Okay, well I’m not up on all the Japanese releases, just the two that we got in the US, so you can understand my jump in logic at calling them 1 and 2. :)

        • Brandonmkii

No problem! I’m just here to help.

          • I will have to research. Sure did love the first CP we got! Book of Shadows not as much, but maybe I need to try it again.

    • Shippoyasha

Yeah, the followup releases since CP1 were more like inbetweeners for the full fledged sequels to come.

  • Detrimont

if the XSEED person is here today, any update on the first game coming AUS/NZ side?

  • I believe in Xseed, love them for the games that they have already localized as well, and I understand where they’re coming from financially, but I still can’t help but feel like this a little lol

  • Yeah, I got them to say the same about the Vita Corpse Party a few weeks back. I really hope they get to pick it up. I had hoped they were gonna do this one side by side with development, but I guess not.

  • FlamingFirewire

And yet somehow Gaijinworks can still produce physical PSP games into 2013 and beyond – why not do limited preorders as a joint with their limited edition PSP physical releases? *sigh*

EDIT: I also wonder what’s officially happening with the Corpse Party spin-off

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

      1. You are comparing a dungeon crawler with modest amount of texts to a game that has pretty much two novels in terms of script~.
      2. You are comparing a one UMD game to a -two- UMDs game~.

So yes, they are very single bit right. It’s not profitable and it’s just not worth it to release the game physically. You should be grateful that they are taking such a huge risk localizing this. This game is amazing, but it’s niche and sales won’t make up for the sheer cost it’ll take them to localize it. People need to get over their self entitlement and just be damn grateful people like XSEED still care to localize games that only a minority are going to play~.

      • FlamingFirewire

EDIT: Also a possibility if a 2-UMD case is too hard to produce: some sort of physical extra to commemorate the release of the game based on pre-sale numbers from fans who want something alongside their digital version of the game. If it can work for a much more obscure dungeon crawler, why not try it with a beloved franchise?

The length of the script does not matter in that reasoning, but I do understand the issue of having no NA PSP games that use 2 UMDs.

I’ve supported their digital only games like Corpse Party and Book of Shadows on their day-one releases – but would it have been preferred to see a physical release of those? Of course. I am most definitely ecstatic and greatful to XSEED for getting us this game at all, but I’m still disappointed my LE of the first game won’t have a companion.

[In this case, it is not about feeling “entitled”, but feeling disappointed that I can’t own a product that exists in another country for a game series I would love to OWN and not “rent” from an online system that requires verification with an online account (you have to sync your PSP with your account, if problems occur in the future, I may not have access to those games in the future.)]

        • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

The length of the script matters plenty into the reasoning. When you don’t invest that much into a localization, you might be able to afford the luxury of a physical release. When a project is as taxing as SC: you simply don’t~.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Please understand that every situation is different. With Class of Heroes 2 we are talking about a situation where it took several rather advertised (we are talking Vic here) ‘bites at the apple’ to scramble to sell a few thousand copies, each one with some measure of expense. That isn’t going to be something most folks will do. We also have no idea of comparative costs of license.

It should also be noted that the other attempt to boutique release PSP games was DJ Max. There you had a larger part of the niche audience and the original companies involvement — and they still didn’t find it viable after a time.

      • Aristides

Don’t forget that a door swings both ways. We’re all more than grateful XSEED has been sticking our necks out to us. However it’s also dumb to consider that we owe them everything and we are in no position to demand anything from localization companies. I’m fine playing DD (I game on my Vita) but I as well as a large portion of their audience are also collectors. I fully understand why they don’t push out a physical copy given that the game is in 2 UMDs and it would simply just cut into profits too much. However if that weren’t the case their reasoning is mute. Publishing PSP games is still affordable as (like FF mentioned) Gaijinworks is still supporting the system. They have been transparent about the UMD manufacturing and if the smallest console localization company can manage it so can XSEED which is one of the largest.

        • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Actually, you are in no position to demand anything. You don’t like digital only, good luck learning Japanese to import yourself a physical version. A company localizes what is profitable, XSEED takes chances and localizes niche games. You are in no position to demand, either you buy their games or you don’t, it’s that simple~.

Digital means PSP / PSV owners can get the game. Physical, not that many people own a PSP anymore. Stores in America don’t even sell it anymore. So to bring a game in physical format for a system that was prematurely killed in America is just inane. Demand ahead, doesn’t mean you are right in doing so and doesn’t mean publishing companies will have to give a damn about it either~.

          • Aristides

My friend perhaps you are not familiar with how capitalism works. Supply and Demand, I’m a consumer and I have a right to demand whatever I want because it’s my money I’m spending. I don’t buy things because I have no other choice I buy them because I choose to buy them. What I should not do is take for granted the Supply provided since just because I provide a demand does not mean I’m entitled to it. What I disagree in is the mentality that I should shut up and take what is given just because I have no other choice. I’m a consumer not a beggar. As I said before I game on DD but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like having physical copies. For the reasons I stated above XSEED’s position perfectly understandable, but such reasons can wane in other cases.

          • You can demand for a game, and the suppliers will supply, if they they feel that the demand warrants them to pursue such a thing. The entitlement comes from thinking: just because a game is available in another country in a particular format, or simply demanding it gives you the right to have it in a particular format -in this case, physical- when it might not be considered feasible from the suppliers’ end – or any reason that they might have.

          • FlamingFirewire

Not many people own PSPs and stores don’t really carry PSP games – hence why doing what Gaijinworks did with CoH2 would be feasible if XSEED had the will and manpower to get in contact with them or Sony and get art/asset/et al. produced. Like you said though, they were probably just too busy in this games case to devote that extra man power to do it.

    • Brandonmkii

Do you mean comedy spin off? They’ve already said no to that, I believe.

      • FlamingFirewire

They said they would maybe, possibly (but probably not) release the game if BoS sales picked up since the sales for the follow up game were far lower than the first game.

  • GH56734

    Indirectly, that means…
    Nayuta no Kiseki will remain a Japan-exclusive ;_;

  • Anthony Birken

NO NO NO NO! LOCALIZE IT! it’ll hurt far too much to know it’s not coming here. The amount of love I plan to put into that on my vita…

  • AkiraScare

TITS?!!! who doesnt love TITS? (^_^)

  • Foryth

Some of those answers are a bit saddening, but quite understandable. I think I’ll most likely get a japanese 3DS to play all the unocalized gems after a few years once the system starts to dwindle in price. (mostly refering to Game Center CX in this case)

  • PERSONA 5!!!! (Umar)

    XSEED I still love you ! …..

  • Sulferce

Really hoping this get’s localized, it has been a while since I have used my Vita for much, only reason I haven’t sold it is that I am holding out for Blood Drive. Finger’s Crossed.

  • Nicholas Perry

Why not release the PS3 HD versions of TITS?

  • Go2hell66

im still so salty about grand knights history. i dont think ill ever get over that

  • tyrantflughude

What about Corpse party 2 Dead patient!!!

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Memories of Fear is currently working on that. I guess they’re a fan-translation group, though.

  • Jesse

I just noticed this was tagged with “Nintendo 3DS”. XD

  • Göran Isacson

I do hope they manage to pull it off. I may not have liked the interquel, or whatever you could call that game, but darnit I’m this far in, I can’t very well stop NOW. Gotta finish the fight, you know?

  • FlamingFirewire

About Sachiko’s Game of Love – Hysteric Birthday 2U AKA that comedy spin-off on PSP: in response to a question on if there is any hope for a release of that game, XSEED said: “No hope, at least in terms of not by us.”

The final nail in the coffin for that game has been driven in :(

    • 0nsen

      So sad ;__;
Though, after all those shitty translations in Book of Shadow it’s not really all that sad.

  • TechPlayer

Well if only XSEED could license Blood Drive for PSVita!
