Hey, Remember That Other Game From The Devs Of Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax?

By Eugene . November 18, 2013 . 4:54pm

Indie fighter Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late saw an update that rebalanced the game, and at the same time introduced fans to crossover character Akatsuki from Akatsuki Blitzkampf as well as other brand new character Chaos.

But maybe you haven’t heard about the game or wonder how it plays. The game’s from developers French Bread, who you may know better from Melty Blood and Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax. REALLY old time fans might even remember they did the Queen of Heart series too (Which I thoroughly enjoyed when I was getting into the Comic Party craze… Now I feel old.)

Well, wonder no more, as the latest promotional video for the game shows off its fighters from dual-sword wielding Linne to scary-angel Vatista (No relation to this person) and watching it gives me a worrisome look at just how players will be able to juggle foes once they get them in their grip. In our last look at the updated game, French Bread had stated that they were trying to move the game away from the impression that Under Night is a combo-style battler, but it sure looks that way here. Anyone played it and wants to give us a better run-down of how it’s like post-update?

    Perfect time to post this.

Nyu Media is in talks with French Bread for a possible localization and release on Steam. However, they are trying to gauge fan support. If you want to see this game on Steam, tell them so! Show your support!

this will happen until Tsukihime remake goes gold, also i believe Nasu has the final word on this… hope he is not busy with FATE or a new project, the Sacchin route needs to be finished

        • Lynx

          Nasu’s done with Fate.
CCC was the last Fate title Nasu was going to directly helping with, iirc.

Under Night is also confirmed to be getting a Skullgirls guest character. They haven’t revealed who just yet, though.

    • AkuLord3

Figure it be Filia, since they’re doing Main characters of games from the other 2 guest characters (yeah Sion is the main character of Melty Blood…) but who knows for now it was hinted on that happening… in time for PC/Console release?~

According to some people, the combos in EXE:L are MUCH shorter. I watched a few match vids and it seems to be the case. There’s more of an emphasis on oki and returning to neutral, combos end earlier. So no more touch-of-death counter hit fishing. I remember the vast majority of matches I watched in the original being snooze-inducing because once one character got in a second or third combo, that was usually it for the round.

They also added to attacks invincibility to jump attacks, so even tough theres lots of options on air you can’t mindlessly jump in, thus inciting ‘footsies’.

Ableru has a bunch of videos showing the differences. Combos shortened and different from how you start it up. The Instant Kill was change to a more powerful Super movie (think Melty Blood Arc drive attack), new moves for characters and other changes. When they stated they didn’t want it to be a Combo Style Battler…they meant more of the old version.

      Edit*

Nvm clearly this is not real lol

This was simply an image made by French Bread to congratulating Skullgirls/Lab Zero Games, for becoming part of Japan’s NESiCAxLive arcade system. Even says on the image in fact, haha (> w <)~ Sadly nothing that cool, but still a fun image.

      Boner pls… ;_;

After Akatsuki from ABK showing up in the game I wouldn’t be surprised of this happening in the future

  • Seraph

The fact she’s in this game is enough for me. I’m a really big fan of Melty Blood.

Waldstein is pretty much the main reason this game is in my memory.
You cant forget someone with claw arms that big! The game still looks really nice.

I play this game every weekend, it’s very awesome!

    Still waiting for PS3 release

My impression of the original version of the game is that maybe they were trying to go for something Skullgirls-esque in terms of combo systems where you have alot of combo potential but you’re supposed to cut it short to go for confusing resets and the like. There was an interview on a japanese site where the developers did say that they had a different idea in mind from what the players ended up doing with it. I also remember in older versions of the game prior to release, it was really easy to cause skullgirls style restands from juggle, which was really interesting. But the combos in this new version are much much shorter and the focus is pretty clearly on everything else now.
