Sengoku Basara 4’s What-If Mode Has Tons Of Branching Options

By Eugene . November 25, 2013 . 4:32pm

If you thought Sengoku Basara 4 would just tack on the previously announced Warring Periods Creation mode, you can now eat your boots. We’ve got word on just how massive the extra mode will be—on top of its already-considerable story mode for nearly every character.

For starters, when we last talked about it we mentioned the game would let you select your battles and so forth. While that’s still there, the game will now take it on its own route through history, with fights chaining together as a sequence of “If Masamune gets defeated here, what happens then?”

This makes for quite a number of possible situations and you’ll have to replay the mode multiple times in order to experience every possible tree. Additionally, you’ll have to purchase and marshall your forces and then decide where to attack from the list of possible divergent historical battles. Battles will come in the form of regular fights, break outs, omens, derivations and good ol’ one-on-one. Some of these will only trigger if previous (hidden) requisites are met too.

As mentioned, because this is a what-if series scenario, it’s possible to get foes to end up together side by side, such as a shot of Saika Magoichi and Tsuruhime fighting together as well.

If you thought that still wasn’t enough, certain paths will open up either drama scenes or full-on animation sequences (Done by Production I.G.!) which you can then view that progress your special route with a new, widely divergent storyline. I shudder to think how anyone will actually finish this without some sort of guidebook or flowchart on hand…

Sengoku Basara 4 will be out for PlayStation 3 on the 23rd of January, 2014.

Labor of love for series fans

  • Masa

what if mode? Wasn’t that a new feature in the latest Dynasty Warriors game?

    • Raindrops

It’s just Siliconera’s word to describe the main story mode this time. Capcom isn’t describing it that way, and DW most certainly didn’t invent the concept of games with branching paths ;)

  • ReidHershel

    Please Capcom, localize this.

    • TheHolypopeofgaming

Not if they do to it what they did to Sengoku Basara 3.

      • ReidHershel

        What’s that?

        • TheHolypopeofgaming

They made it english only. Yukimura should not sound like the 2nd black power ranger

          • urbanscholar

English only is a topic for another discussion in itself for localized games.

Short version is that jpn voicework costs the publisher more to add & often times it’s not cost effective.

With all the va in SB that’s a lot.

    • urbanscholar

SB3/SBSH sold very poorly in the West, so unfortunately this ain’t happen captain

    purchase forces?

    ……go on.

    • Raindrops

I believe this is a misinterpretation ^^; you can purchase equipment and items to upgrade your weapons, and books which modify the difficulty by adding special conditions, but you can’t purchase actual forces as far as I have seen anywhere…

      • Warboss Aohd

        “Purchase and Marshall your forces”

        • Raindrops

Yes, a misinterpretation on Siliconera’s part, not yours. The text in the video says no such thing. I can only assume they have misunderstood the ‘Battle Play’ part where you can purchase books which let you modify the rules of each stage to increase the difficulty and the reward simultaneously.

  • Göran Isacson

That is a really thorough mode, especially with the branching paths… perhaps they’ll let us recreate the circumstances behind the first seasons final team-up? Can Date and Yukimura join forces for a rainbow-colored Pride Punch? Man I do hope so.

  • Musashi234

I Dont care if they dont Dub this game I JUST WANT IT TRANSLATED AT LEAST!!!!! SHIT PUT ON ON THE PSN IF YOU HAVE TOOO!!!!!!

  • fyi1191

Last screen there, an anime special bro route?

  • new_tradition

I finally put my money where my mouth is and preordered this game’s LE. It’s my first Japanese import ever (most expensive game release I’m getting to boot) and I expect to struggle through the language, but I really want it.

I just wish Capcom USA would realize they could’ve got my money :/

  • brian

I reeeeally hope it enhances that flowchart from SB3.

  • fairysun

I want all the anime scenes. That is some high quality animation over there.
