Namco Bandai Opens Teaser Site For The Next Tales Of Game

By Spencer . November 26, 2013 . 7:27pm

imageTales fans, Namco Bandai is about to announce the next game in the Tales of series. There is a teaser site up for the next main or as Hideo Baba likes to say "mothership title."

Our guess is this will be for Tales of Zestiria since Namco Bandai filed trademarks for that in the U.S. and Europe. Trademarks often give us a hint at what future games are in the works and we even know why Hideo Baba registers so many Tales of trademarks.

Read more stories about on Siliconera.

  • Yaaay! :D

  • HYPE.

  • Courtney Levi Osborn

  • Nitraion

Holy shit yesterday was P5 now this….
well i expect this will be in PS4 but who knows..

    • CureMarine

Baba said he wanted to stay on PS3 a bit longer, but that was before Symphonia Chronicles so I’ve no idea if that is what he meant by that or not.

      • LightZero

He likely meant Zestiria. Symphonia Chronicles is just a HD port.

        • CureMarine

          That is what I figured.

    • LightZero

No as mention Baba wants to stick with the PS3 for awhile due to it already having an established install base. Although they are also working on a PS4 Tales that is in the early stages. The possible Tales of Zestiria will likely be the final main Tales we get for the PS3.

      • Nitraion

Hmm well maybe if this is zestoria on Ps3…
they make zestoria 2 on Ps4? to reel out PS4 selling??…
i am not saying we should always have 2nd game like FF XIII or ToX but gotta admit making fresh new story game from start kinda hard this days..

  • Guest

November is a awesome month, so many great news coming out. First the hype over console launches, then Atlus’ announcements and now this.

  • Erena Arisu

its related to ToP and destiny? a prequel? sequel? HD remaster? a reboot/shot? or something new… why do they show top and tod….

    • NegativeZero

Presumably it’s a countdown and they’ll update it with more recent games over time, producing a timeline ending in the next mothership game releasing in 2014 or 2015.

Assuming 1 new one per day, that’d be 12 more days, but if it’s two a day then you’re talking a 6 day countdown with the new one being announced on the 4th.

      • Silver Citizen

I was thinking the same thing. I hope we’re right.

  • Suriel Cruz

Persona 5 and now a new ‘Tales of’, Hideo do you want to kill me?!… Dx

    • awat

LOLz BABA is a great guy ! more localized tales of yays

    • Lightthrower

We already knew that they were working on a new PS4 Tales game, this is probably it.

      • Lightthrower
        • M’iau M’iaut

News is always new for someone, or perhaps they just want to be excited about it and share their excitement with our community. Not everyone wires themselves into multiple news feeds and there is a lot of gaming news to report at the moment.

        • Ferrick

it’s just downvotes, don’t care too much about it =/

and yes, it is indeed old news in this site too

        • Bobby Jennings

I thought that was a false rumor.

  • However. If it’s “Xillia 3: Milla Returns” then I quit the series…

    • fyi1191

Xillia2 already accomplished this. How many times do you want her to return? She got her job in the other world.

      • greeeed

        joke about FFXIII-3: Lighting Returns

      • I’m in Xian Du in Xillia 1.

*Tries desperately to pretend not to hear the spoiler*

        • There’s a special place in hell for people who down-vote relatively neutral and harmless posts. Don’t worry, it wasn’t a spoiler as much as it was just making an jovial association with FF13-3.

          • Bec66

I think its because you sounded like you were bashing Millia and the Xillia games without any-sort rhyme or reason.

          • I was more talking to the one measly downvote Taijutsu-Josh has above me. But thanks.

But in general, I’m not a fan of sequels on sequels on sequels. It gets old, and room for new/fresh titles is something I always look forward to more.

And if you think I’m bashing a title, you have yet to meet a real troll. But generally, I did think Xillia was pretty good, but a somewhat weaker Tales title (though I hear Xill2 is super-duper, so yay).

          • Bobby Jennings

Yes. Xillia 2 is amazing. You’d probably want a Xillia 3 after playing it too.

          • Anthony Birken

I quite loved Xillia 2, but after all that sweetness I don’t know if my body can handle another Xillia. I’m looking forward to a new play style.

          • Oh, thanks for the reassurance.

Downvoters running rampant , I guess?

  • Akemi Nakajima

First Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV..
    …and then Persona 5
    ..and this.

I expect a comeback of JRPG in 2014.

    • Saraneth

Not to mention Bravely Default. This will be a good year.

      • Pockystix

it’s been a good time to be an RPG fan!~

        • transferstudentx

good for the player bad for his wallet

    • Arcana Wiz

      Ar no Surge
      Atelier Escha
      Final Fantasy X/X-2 hd
      Witch and hundred knights
      Fairy Fencer F
      Dark souls 2
      Tales of symphonia chronicles
      Tales of Xillia 2

all jrpgs that will be released here in 2014 on ps3…. (only ar no surge that isnt certain the localization)

      • FlyingPony

OMG I want to cry. BANZAI jRPG, BANZAI!!!

        2014 can’t come fast enough.

        • Arcana Wiz

and if you like japanese games you can include.

          Castlevania 2
          Natural Doctrine
          Drakengard 3.
          Guilty gear Xrd
          Blazblue CP
          J-Stars Victory Vs

          • KazukiNanbu

if you are talking about Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 then you are wrong, that game is not japanese

          • Kuromadou

also Stryder is made by western developer cmiiw

          • Bobby Jennings

So hyped for J-Stars. You don’t know how hyped.

      • Demeanor

Oh my God how I love your post!!! ^ ^
Now the REAL question is: Platform for the next mothership Tales? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for PS4!!! >.<

        • Brendon Mitchell

they have stated that tales of games shall foreverstay on the PS3 console only

        • Draparde

“I can’t really comment on that, though I will say that we haven’t started any development on any next generation systems. We’re still focused on the PS3.

When it comes to platforms, it all comes down to what our fans have. We’ve done lots of research and have determined that most Tales fans have PlayStation 3s, which is why most of the main Tales of games come out for that platform.

that was back in april. so it probably wont be on ps4, but has a high chance of being ps3. (mainly because of the second paragraph).

          • Bobby Jennings

Just like they said there were no plans for a HD port of Symphonia..and look what happened.

      • icecoffemix

        You forgot

        Mana Khemia 3

      • deadMastershiro

Thanks wasn’t sure about fairy fencer f.

    • ElAbuelo69

Except none of those will come out on 2014 :(

    • Anthony Birken

  • HououinKyouma

    My body is ready.

    • transferstudentx

dont kid yourself its not ready not for this anyway

  • Barrylocke89

I see the hype train just doesn’t quit these days.

    • dawnbomb

      FrankerZ FrankerZ FrankerZ

  • HerosLight

    Good good.

It better not be a Tales of Link teaser since that was already mentioned/announced before.

    • Bobby Jennings

      It isn’t. -_-

  • ndjn3979

How representative is Tales of Xillia of the quality of the Tales series?

    • Manny Being Manny

Its the worst title since Legendia

      • Go2hell66

wth i really liked legendia. never knew people hated it so much

        • Gemlit

Isn’t Legendia the one where you explore the ship instead of the rest of the continents? If it did both, I would be very pleased. Instead, it’s a slap in the face.

Also, the whole game is about true love overpowering global rule. Come on, they can do better than that!

          • icecoffemix

….It’s clear that you haven’t even played the game.

          • brian

That’s basically it in a nutshell, at least until Vaclav is beaten and even after that it was mostly all about true love winning.
I liked it, but it gives me mixed feelings.

          • icecoffemix

The ship is the size of a continent, it’s massive and even have sea on its own.
The main antagonist has no global rule on the ship, they’re invading forces.

The love bullshit is standard fare on JRPG, but I didn’t really care about it anyway. Tales games has never been strong on story.

          • Gemlit

I meant that I would have like to travel on ALL of the continents, and not just the ship. Seeing the outside world, meeting the team’s family and friends, and touring the towns/cities attractions is what I and other RPG fans should have in that game.

I liked the love parts, but it should have more substance. Make the love more intricate and detailed.
The game should focus on what would make the protagonist coming aware of his faults/strengths to beat the final boss.

          • icecoffemix

It’s still bigger than most JRPG nowadays, and big enough for its time. If just one shipt is that big I don’t think they can fit the whole world in the game anyway, though we probably could have seen it were it succeed (remember Sword of Legendia? yeah).

I don’t really remember the love part but IIRC Senel doesn’t even actually love Shirley till the end, he snapped her out not through power of love thing (or if he was, it was sibling kind of love) if I remember correctly.

And that line of story is soo original it never touch JRPG ever rite? It’s one way or another really. Play Nocturne if you want unconventional plot, I recommend it.

          • Gemlit

            I’ll try it, thanks.

          • brian

He is power hungry though, and seems to have global ambitions
Speaking of global, the “mainland” is mentioned and it disappointed me it never appeared.
Senel was an alliance marine but what alliance?
And its battle system was pretty clunky plus certain dungeons too being labyrinthine without any map and ridiculous encounter rate.
Gotta give huge props to its character quests (those developed the entire party better than any other Tales game I’ve played) and kickass soundtrack.

          • icecoffemix

Yes but it was never expanded upon. We all just see him as invaders.

The battle system was no better than early sidescroller tales game really. Symphonia was better of course but it was not that bad.

No map and high encounter rate, Standard fare for PSX and early PS2 games, welcome to the past where light bottle is actually useful. :P

          • Gemlit

It’s obvious that I haven’t played the game, but I have watched a Lets Play of it. I would like to buy and play the game, and I think I would like it, but I think the aforementioned flaws make the game less appealing to those that played it.

      • Nitraion

I think they fix it on ToX 2

      • Ferrick

        gotta love opinions~

        • Bec66

And how the tales fanbase doesn’t seem to know how to do anything but disagree and whine.

      • icecoffemix

Joke on you, Legendia is probably my favorite Tales for the characters.

        • Pyrotek85

I felt the same way. Strange pacing, so-so gameplay, but I really ended up liking the characters a lot. I liked how it had a built-in epilogue, it tied up any loose ends with each of their backstories. Overall I liked it, but I can definitely see why many might not.

    • dawnbomb

what manny said, altho i want to believe it shines, it really doesn’t. growth trees are always nice. but damn combat was so bland, even vesperia was better, and verperia did nothing new, expect try to perfect ‘bland’ (and they did very very well, combat was amazing)

    • Laith Rem

It combines two systems that have always been separate so, not that representative in gameplay. It has one of the most incomplete stories of the series, but it does showcase the essential conflict present in most iterations. The characters in the party do represent the typical tales party.

    • Ferrick

it’s not the best, nor is it the worst, Xillia in it’s entirety is a fine game, just lacking in many parts, which are remedied in it’s sequel

    • Earthjolly

Pretty Solid. Not the best but its up there in the green zone.

    • Rogerrmark

Awesome game.Cut out/trimmed a lot of the “fat” of the franchise.

I wish it was harder, though.Still, one of the best, imo.

    • i believe its a slow start, but gets better in the end.

      • icecoffemix

I actually like the first half of the game better than the very rushed second half.

        • Bec66

How so it was only during the third act that things seemed to rush, but never enough to ruin the story.

          • icecoffemix

            Too spoilerific to discuss here.

And well if you’ve played any other Tales games (at least the pre PS3 one), it’s hard not to deem it rush hour all the way to the end after the 2nd half.

It’s enough to ruin some character for me.

          • Bec66

But I have and I really don’t see what you’re talking about and unless you only played Millia’s side which skips a load of important plot events after you beat Gilland.

          • icecoffemix

I played Jude. Let’s just agree to disagree shall we?

    • icecoffemix

Pretty mediocre, not bad but not overly good either. I enjoyed the game but wish it was more coherent with the characterization (which was fine until certain point…), later half feels rushed too, maybe that’s why we got Xillia 2.

    • Romored

Graces F has a slightly better combat system, but I spent almost 100 hours on Xillia, so I really enjoyed it. It has pretty good storyline and characters, and quite a few interesting subevents. While it’s true that it lacks some of the features that make a game a “Tales” game (which are present in Xillia 2), it still is a pretty solid title. If you’ve never played a Tales game and you like jrpgs, if you start with Xillia you’ll most likely love it.

  • LightZero

The next and possibly final Tales game for the PS3. I’m glad my PS3 will be getting some loving for 2014 to 2015.

  • Go2hell66

lol people getting excited already. cmon guys we all know better than that by now

  • $61526767

One after another their are many more games coming out each year.. my wallet isn’t going to survive next year. TOO MANY GAMES. Oh well, gonna spend it all on games. <3

  • Earthjolly

PS3 and or PS vita exclusive Please, oh the hype

  • What console after releasing it’s successor have games announced for it let alone JRPG?

    • icecoffemix

      PSX and PS2?

And why do everyone think this is for PS3? I don’t see it on the site…

      • Pyrotek85

I guess it depends on when they started development. If it’s been in the works for a while it’s likely PS3.

        • icecoffemix

Or maybe crossgen? they talked about early PS4 tales some times ago.

          • Pyrotek85

Could be. I know that the PS4 is supposed to be easier to develop, but it would still cost more resources to do both. Personally I don’t think the series is big/profitable enough to warrant it, so it’s probably one or the other.

          • Arcana Wiz

they never made a cross gen Tales of, actually they didnt even release games in more than one plataform once, they usually port them later. So i dunno.

          • Pyrotek85

Yeah there’s a first time for anything but I just don’t see it with this franchise. I don’t think the player base is big enough.

      • Arcana Wiz

in a interview Baba hinted that it would be for Sony consoles, and why probably isnt for ps4?

jrpgs that dont tend to sell systems, have big budgets, etc, tend to be released to the console that have 80 millions units(PS3) where the fanbase is, instead of a new console that they dont know if the fanbase moved to it,

        • icecoffemix

Sony could have subsidized it to move PS4 on Japan. But yeah, at the very best it’s probably going to be crossgen.

          • Arcana Wiz

Well sony is more interested in winning the west this gen, so they are more focused in games like Infamous ,chances of them helping a small to medium game are few…

actually after seeing that P5 wont be released for Ps4 i dont expect many jrpgs on ps4 in 2014…..

          • icecoffemix

They have Deep Down and Natural Doctrine. And even thought they are more focused on the west they are still releasing in Japan and games like Infamous is west oriented.

Umm, Sony has helped many many small to medium games in the past. See Journey, Flower, Rime, etc. Though I dunno if you can call Tales games small.

          • Arcana Wiz

ops, sorry i worded it bad :P, i was saying that now in the first year they are using their money in games that will sell well, so they will focus on games that apeal for more people, they will probably begin to make jrpgs on the second year onwards..

And these games that you listed were easy to help, cause are small games, Tales of isnt small(i wrote it wrong XD) it have a small fanbase.

          • icecoffemix

JRPG can still be a big seller in Japan. What you said still won’t discount the possibility of crossgen, even if it’s not at launch.

Baba already confirmed Tales for PS4 anyway, the question is if it’s this one or we’ll have different mainline Tales for PS4 not long after this.

          • LightZero

Tales of Zestiria will likely be for the PS3 and be the last Tales for the system. Namdai isn’t above releasing a Tales game after a new gen is under way. Phantasia for the Snes and the remake of Destiny for the PS2 are good examples. The next Tales game (the one they are working on) is for the PS4. That one is early in development.

          • LightZero

The PS4 has no guarantee to do that well in Japan compare to say the 3DS or even the Vita. I would imagine it will struggle in its own like the Wii U. Japan is handheld country. Even then it takes awhile for a new system to surpass the old one in sales. The PS2 owned the PS3 for awhile. The DS did the same to the 3DS. The PSP also did it to the Vita (at least in Japan). The PS4 isn’t a good investment yet. It will be a long while before the bulk of the PS3 audience jump on board.

The only people buying a PS4 are tech lovers and diehard Sony fans and fanboys. Eventually the hype will die down. Everyone else is satisfied with their PS3 or 360. They won’t make the jump until the middle or end of the PS4 life.

          • icecoffemix

PS3 games can still sell for hundreds thousands there. Wii U is simply dead, not home console in general.

Like I’ve said over and over again in this discussion, the possibility is there if either Sony make a deal to Bamco ala Capcom’s Deep Down or PS4 came out to be a massive success.

And 360 have no presence at all in Japan, it’s deader than Wii U.

      • fireguardiancoty

Xillia has sold 1 million copies worldwide and Xillia 2 has done half of that in Japan alone if that says anything.

        • icecoffemix

Okay and that’s relevant to my question… how?

          • Taxonomic

He’s talking about install base and the fact that most developers think handhelds have more market penetration than consoles. What he’s saying is that despite Xillia being *only* a PS3 console title, it still did remarkably well in a market that developers/publishers foolishly believe belongs to handhelds.

          • icecoffemix

            Hmm okay fair enough.

          • LightZero

Because handheld does have more market penetration in Japan especially. That doesn’t mean a good game couldn’t sell well on console at least the well known ones anyway. The PS3 is on average in the top 3 best selling system with the 3DS obviously being the top dog. I don’t quite follow.

      • Draparde

I think its for ps3 simply because of the qote i used above, they had no plans to make ps4 games back then, and because most tales fans where on the ps3, they where making the games for that system.

though i doubt doubt it could be crossgen. but i personally wouldn’t get my hopes up.

        • icecoffemix

It could be crossgen if Sony do something about it or if PS4 is a massive success in Japan.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

      How quickly we forget.
      PS3 – Released 2006
PS2 2006: Tales of the Abyss, Persona 3, Devil Summoner Raidou, Valkyrie Profile 2, Final Fantasy 12
2007: Ar Tonelico, Atelier Iris 3
      2008: Persona 4
      2009: Ar Tonelico 2, Raidou 2

2010: Sakura Wars So Long My Love
…and that’s barely scratching the surace.

      • LightZero

I’m starting to wonder this is some people first gen because this is not unusual. Even the PS1 had games that came out well after the PS2. Likewise for the Snes after the PS1 was release.

  • Ren Yuumei

Looks like they might remake phantasia and destiny

  • Tatsuya Fabre

    But I haven’t finished Symphonia Chronicles yet…

  • Arcana Wiz

And in the teaser site if you click on a blue tab on the end of the page it will let you download some nice wallpapers. =D

    • holyPaladin

      Could you share the wallpapers?
      Just read the news today…

      • Arcana Wiz

lucky you i was seeing my email! here is all of them!
they already updated two hours ago, which makes a total of 8 wallpapers, so wait for the next one in ~20hours. And only 6 (three days) left!

        • holyPaladin

          Wow thanks a lot!
I gonna keep eye on them~

  • tubers

What are the chances of thins being an iOS title?

    • Taxonomic

If it was Squeenix, highly likely.

  • Brendon Mitchell

I can’t help but wonder why they only show phantasia and destiny . . . .

  • Pleaseeee dooo iiittttt babaaaa-saaaan! PS3 and confirmed localization = mah laif is complete

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

    I’m hoping for a 3DS title.

    • Spirit Macardi

Same here. The series has been neglecting Nindendo a lot, even though its first truly huge success in western markets was on a Nintendo console.

  • sd28

new tales of mobile im guessing

    • Anthony Birken

No way man, MOTHER-ship title~ Mobile would be so disheartening.

  • More and more good news. This has been a good week!

  • Spirit Macardi

Always up for more Tales! I’d still love to see them do another licensed Tales game like Keroro RPG, since I feel that was a unique idea that had some nice potential, but mainstream Tales is still awesome.

But hey, you guys still haven’t mentioned the trademark that was just filed for Klonoa: Empire of Dreams. In terms of Namco news, that’s FAR more unexpected.

Actually, what if the two were related… Tales of Phantomile = ALL MY MONEY!

  • fairysun

Still waiting for the english version of this. :(

    • Jirin

I’d take Rebirth over that, but yeah I agree.

I’d take ToD2 with the zone system taken out and the attack/magic rebalanced.

      • Anthony Birken

I’d take em both, the play style is interesting in them both, just a shame that I can’t cast indignation in ToD2 but the enemy can…

I’d want ToD2 due to Barbatos being my favourite boss in Tales series. Seriously, his fights are just too unique xD

There are a few signs such as the header image on the site being called ‘tov_cnt.jpg’, there’s a ‘tov’ reference in the site’s CSS file too. Not to mention the similarity of the font and colours to Vesperia’s.

        Blog post on Esuteru here:

  • darkfox1

Hope it’s a PS3 or 3DS title or something. SERIOUSLY not ready for anything next gen.

  • Bec66

Why the phantasia and destiny videos though? It isn’t and HD remake is it? If so it wouldn’t be the “Next Tales of

    • Arcana Wiz

i think probably it will be countdown in the cronological order of the games….

    • Radiosity

It says quite clearly on the site ‘Mothership title’, that’s not going to be a remake. It’s also seemingly their 20th anniversary game, so that would put it in 2015.

  • Will Jay

Well, if it’s for PS4 and comes out in the next two years, guess I’ll definitely have to buy one by then.

  • mike dickson

      Xillia 2

  • Kornelious

Dang Namco, I’ve got to worry about Xillia 2, Chronicles, and a lingering hope for the two Vita games, and yet you never relent. X(
