Konami Looking Into Metal Gear Rising Region Lock On Steam

By Ishaan . January 6, 2014 . 8:30am

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is coming to Steam later this week, but the game appears to be region-locked. While the game is available to residents of the U.S. and United Kingdom, Rising is unavailable in certain parts of Europe and Asia, and gifting the game across regions is disabled in certain parts of the world as well.

That said, Konami are looking into the issue, J.P. Kellams, a Creative Producer at PlatinumGames shared via his Twitter feed. Kellams tweeted: “Just letting everyone know: First thing I did in the office today was talk about the MGR region lock thing. @konami are looking in to it.”

He added, “When I hear something back from the producer that I can share, I will be sure to share it here. Still no idea what’s up though.”

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be available via Steam on January 9th.

How do you look into something which had to be consciously implemented? And why would you do it?

Are the differences between the Yen, Euro and US dollar really this much?

    • Tenetan

It have always been that much yes, on average game prices between europe and USA example is 25-50% sure most of europe have 19-25% added tax on it but some game prices is yet just much much more expensiver then this.

Example Sweden, Steam is a extreamly expensive place to buy games to because we are forced to pay in Euro, If you can buy the games on disc you usually get off with almost half the prise in stores.

Regional pricing can vary wildly. For instance, $50 is the going price of a AAA game in the US, but there’s some desire to pad the bottom line by selling them for cheap in less well-off regions. For instance, a new game might go for $10 instead of $50.

I’m not sure if this applies to Konami, but publishers are fed up with the resale/gifting of cheap keys from eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, etc. A key can be purchased at $10 and then resold to Americans for $15-20). As you might expect, such drastic price differences have created a sizable grey market.

Konami also locked PES 2014 in Asia too. they’re so dumb to do this to one of their largest PES markets.

Konami should better fix this or else people will start throwing tables in rage while the song “Rules of Nature” is playing.
