Fully Free Movement in Giant Mech Suits? Check.

Kickstarter title Project Nimbus is an ambitiously promising, but very much ready-to-show-it mecha flying game. From developers GameCrafterTeam in Thailand, Project Nimbus is promising to be a fast-paced, full 3D and fully 3D-maneuverable game for the PC.

While still in development, you just have to check out the many videos the team has already put out on their YouTube channel.

Set on an Earth that, of course, suffered an apocalypse, mankind is now living in the skies, Bespin-style. But we can’t get along, ever. Nope. So even after we’ve got ourselves settled down, we’re still fighting it out with special Battleframes—gigantic mechs with lots of weapons. These things are fast, too. The devs claim it’ll be possible to boost from the surface of what remains of Earth to low orbit “within minutes”.

One cool bit is the ability to utilize Battleframes that you’ve fought before, albeit only when replaying a cleared mission. This includes, for those tizzy with the thought, the ability to run around in enemy boss Battleframes.

The game isn’t asking for much, just some $6,000 in British pounds. But the devs are quick to inform us why they’re asking for such a low sum for Project Nimbus—living in Thailand, the cost of living is pretty low, making sure they keep prices down. Having gone there a couple of times I can attest to that. They’ve also got a list of voice actors lined up to do the voiceovers already!

If they meet their stretch goals, the game will head to Mac as well as possibly be Oculus-Rift compatible. I don’t even want to dream how cool playing a game set to this crazy speed will be like with the Oculus strapped to my head. As of this post, Project Nimbus has crossed its Kickstarter goal already, with about two weeks left to go.

This games looks great! remind me to ACE series and I love it. I wonder how Oculus-Rift compatible will be…

    • PreyMantis

It does remind me of Ace specifically Assult Horizon with its dynamic aiming.

      • Exkaiser

I believe he meant Another Century’s Episode and not Ace Combat…

        • PreyMantis

Oh, okay. This game’s aiming just reminded me so much of Ace Combat, that’s why I though he meant that game.

    • Serephitus

It’d be nice to have a next gen ACE title again.

  • Kaetsu

    Looks awesome!

  • Valtiel Ikari

wow, looks very promising! wonder if I can take the battle to the ground?

  • VenerableSage

This is seriously scratching an itch I’ve had for a long time. The only way it’s different from my mental desires is that it’s not being made by Namco Bandai and isn’t set in the SRWOG universe.

EDIT – They mention a Versus mode on the Kickstarter page; I’m really interested to hear more about it.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Do want.

      MUST want.

  • Death Saved

Hmm anyone else think those three olive drab mechs look like the Anf/Fanton from Gundam 00

  • DanielGearSolid

Love mech games, not really seeing anything amazing about this one tho

I want to play this *_*

  • tarbis

Looks great. I wanna pilot those mechs :D

  • Warboss Aohd

    Coop would be so Proud.

‘sniff’ so much Dakka……..it’s so beautiful.

  • Godmars

Aw, no console stretch goal… :(

And while I love the idea, given the whole kingdom’s in the sky theme, the designs should be more aerial. Like in the Xbox Murakumo game.

    • KnifeAndFork

Yeah they seemed more like ground mecha….should be more aerodynamic…

    • PreyMantis

Well, we always have that other mecha JRPG game by Monolith Soft.

      • Godmars

You mean the game with no release date and might have production problems?

        • PreyMantis

Uhh… It may not have an exact release date, but it’s scheduled to be released this year. And what do you mean by production problem? Nintendo having a production problem on their games is the last thing anyone should be worrying about, so I don’t know what you mean by production problem.

Although the power fantasy from being able to do feats at supersonic speeds, and with human-like grace is always welcome, I actually prefer the tense aspects of having limited vehicle-like movements in what’s essentially a “walking coffin”, and having dire situations if the odds are against you 2 to 1 in more strategic, rather than taking down scores of enemies ZOE style.

Not to say that this looks bad at all, there’s certainly room for both kinds of games.

    • KnifeAndFork

      Nah

Giant slow moving clunky mechs is just a bad idea in general. The more modernly realistic they try to make them, the bigger a joke they seem to me. They just seem like really easy targets to the point whete it would just seem silly to even design them. Now even more evident in Titanfall, where a single grunt with a jet pack can easily take one down.
Now when you have an advanced fast moving aerial mecha that’s formidable in manueverability and speed, then actually that makes it more believable to me. And more fun

      • KajiTetsushi

It isn’t a bad idea in TitanFall; it’s an expected balance, where most players are expected to fight on foot. If you designed mechs that would dodge all hits in PvP from infantry like a pro without a fair counter, then I fully expect your customers to ask for a refund within a week.

As for the direction of slow-clunky robots, that’s a creative decision. I always did prefer an FPS with tanks, anyway.

In short, you’re comparing a infantry game with mechs to a mech game… with mechs.

  • Namuro

Wow, this looks to be pretty high quality stuff! The battle looks great, and the music is nice, too.

I will definitely keep an eye on this one!

  • Romancer Ecclesia

I read Jennifer Carbonara. I must be hungry.

  • KnifeAndFork

Wasn’t feelin that clunky white mecha design but holy shit that camera work was awesome. Why stop at PC? Go for PS4….

  • Sergio Briceño

Looks incredible, but I think so much freedom of movement could be overwhelming. Maybe if they had a “focus on instant threat” button or something…

  • Fate

    neat

    I found a baka-Shinji
