Actually, The Slayers In Toukiden Have Been Fighting Oni For Over 1,000 Years

Toukiden: Age of Demons like many games developed by Tecmo Koei is inspired by history, but this PlayStation Vita hunting game doesn’t take place in ancient Japan. Slayers have been fighting Oni for over one thousand years. Now, it’s the last stand against Oni who have emerged in droves during an event called the Awakening. Your mission is to create a character and defeat the Oni.

Toukiden: Age of Demons was a strong seller in Japan and had a crossover with Sony Computer Entertainment’s hunting title Soul Sacrifice. The game comes out in the West on February 11.

Really great game. I hope it gets recognition in the West.

    • Digital-Devil

I too hope it gets recognition in the west but I doubt western reviewers will score this higher than 6-7 citing repetitiveness and lack of story. Funny given how many games are released on an annual basis with the same gameplay and they score 8-9. Western reviewers really need to come up with a better review system. Although I prefer dual audio I’m just glad we’re getting the game at all. I miss the golden age of Japanese rpgs and arpgs.

It’s a shame they cancelled the English Dub, because I was looking forward to this game. Can’t really see myself bothering to get this now, though.

    • tubers

Is this confirmed? I really like Eng dubs.. doesn’t matter to me if it isn’t great.

      • Rentekabond

Yeah, It was confirmed on their Twitter back in October, though I didn’t know about it until today. A real shame.

        • Doctor Nebula

That doesn’t seem like a very good reason to not get it. Some games are better with subs anyhow (Arc Rise Fantasia, that was the worst voice acting I’ve heard in a game for awhile).

          • Kornelious

Oh my god DON’T remind me….It’s bad when the bad voices take away from an otherwise awesome game X(

          • Rentekabond

It’s a perfectly valid reason to me. I don’t have a lot of time to invest into that many games as it is and, if they’re not willing to invest the time/money into the language I prefer, there’s no reason I should invest my time and money into their product.

Part of the charm and experience of playing games like this and Dynasty Warriors is the voice actors that I’m acquainted with. Case in point, I’m definitely going to get DW8 when it comes out on Vita because it has English voices, but I wouldn’t repurchase WO3 (I bought it on ps3) because, despite having probably the best system so far, I can never get immersed because of the language barrier.

In regards to Toukiden, if I wanted to play it in Japanese, I have plenty of avenues to do so. But now there’s no way for me to play it in english. That’s not a structure I want to support, hence why I also avoided Project X Zone.

I bet you’re fun at parties.

          • fairysun

I don’t know why people downvoting you. It’s matter of personal preference. You did not bash the game because it did not have English dub and I respect you for that.

            >Some games are better with subs anyhow

To me, in some cases, it’s not just that they’re better but that it makes more sense. Playing through a game based in/off some foreign region and they’re speaking fluent English….?

ex. Persona 4 has great English VAs but…fuck, hearing them say the honorifics was so cringey… and the game is based in Japan… with all Japanese characters… I enjoyed playing the game, but it still doesn’t feel right.

          • Andhros

That reason makes sense in theory. However, in practice it can fall flat. I would rather not play Dynasty Warriors with Chinese vocals. Also there are several anime or games where the characters should speak in English, Russian or French yet everyone is chatting away in Japanese.

My fear with that announcement has more to do with support from the developers. Someone mentioned that it was English only subs not multi-5, which is even more worrisome. It seems like rather than invest in the games oversea potential they are throwing us a bone. Could cause headaches if support is lacking due to disinterest.

I know what you mean, P4 COULD have beem better in japanese audio.

        • tubers

          Thanks.

Kinda sad that VA weights heavily on your decision but I can try to understand.

          GL! Happy gaming.

        • xXDGFXx

WOOO! Confirmation that it has the original VAs!

  • icecoffemix

Will there be a thousand year old loli?

    • http://altsune.com/ Ovada Bey

I’ll buy it in hopes of it, lol

    • tubers

A thousand year old oni loli :P

    • Mugen555

Technically there is one character that pretty much “older than what it looks”

  • Valtiel Ikari

so, is the gameplay fast paced?

  • tubers

A 1,000 years of Oni hunting? Now that’s “repetitive” lol

  • Rattlemebones
