How YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z Was Conceived

By Ishaan . January 21, 2014 . 4:27pm

YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z was born out of a variety of different things, the game’s developers reveal in a new developer diary. One of these was the idea of combining the idea of a ninja and a machine, which resulted in Yaiba himself being a cyborg.

The second was elements that Comcept’s Keiji Inafune—who is overseeing the game—wanted to include. These included things like mechs, zombies and ninjas.

The third, says the game’s producer, was the concept of what Americans and Japanese think makes a ninja “cool,” and trying to find a balance that could accommodate these differences in opinion. You can hear about all these elements in the video above.

YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z will be available on February 28th in Europe and March 4th in North America for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

How Yaiba was conceived, Ninja Gaiden + Lollipop Chainsaw = Yaiba

  • tarbis

Can they change the name? This is still the Yaiba that pops out of my head whenever I hear the name.

      Damn right!

A ninja cyborg game with mechs and zombies? Original stuff! I’ve never been interested in the Ninja Gaiden series, but I think with Yaiba constantly dropping F bombs and using verbal sexual harassment towards that one female character, I think this’ll definitely pull me in!

I feel sorry for the fans.. but I’m happy for the people who are looking forward to it.

Hmm seems cool but not a fan of the art though, looks like a colored mad world.

How does this character embody what anyone thinks is cool about ninjas? If you think ninjas are cool, it’s definitely not because of their obnoxious wise-cracking. I’m guessing they think that the west are only familiar with ninjas of the teenage mutant turtle variety.

its like, a weird look into what the japanese think america thinks is cool.

. . . well I guess Panty and Stocking turned out okay for something that was exactly that (if you replace “cool” with “funny”)?

        • Auvers

I don’t think P&S was trying to appeal to americans though like this clearly is. I think the people who made it just really like american things rather than trying to “combine” things to appeal to both.

The question is, what ninjas have been big in the west outside of those? Not many, to be frank.

Not a good move in my opinion

I always misread the title as “Yabai,” and chuckle.
If you live in Japan, you hear this word enough.

I just imagine playing it with friends, hearing everyone yelling “Eeee–! Yabai. Yabai! Yabaiyabaiyabaiyabai!”

I’m very curious as to who wrote the game’s English script; whether the Japanese developers wanted the English script to be as vulgar as it is, or if that was decided by the American writers or developers themselves.
