Shovel Knight Is In Alpha And Has A New Trailer

By Ishaan . January 23, 2014 . 3:15pm

Yacht Club Games’ Mega Man-inspired platformer, Shovel Knight, has reached its alpha stage this week, the studio has announced. “Alpha” in this case means that the game is fully playable from start to finish with all features implemented.

The next step is moving towards the beta phase, Yacht Club say. This means addressing bugs, playtesting, polish, balance, reiterating, localization, certification and more. They add that the reason the process is taking longer than expected is because the game “got a lot bigger” than originally intended.

A new trailer for Shovel Knight can be viewed above. The game is in development for PC, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

I’m so glad I kickstarted this thing. I’m getting the PC version, but will buy the 3DS version as well to support the devs.

    *sniffle* Square in the childhoods…
Seriously if both Shovel Knight and Mighty No. 9 aren’t trips down memory street, I don’t know what is. Day 1 purchase confirmed.

Is it weird that, as a Mega Man fan, I’m way more excited for Shovel Knight than for Mighty No. 9? Not that I won’t buy both, mind you.

I am the same as you. I think its because we are getting full on gameplay trailers of Shovel Knight and to be honest, it looks like a mix between an action rpg and Megaman. All the extra actions you can do besides just normal Megaman style gameplay is what cements it, that, and I love the shovel jump…makes me think of that move from Zelda 2.

The game looks as great as I remember it. They can take as much time as they need if i means a better game. Disappointed there isn’t a PS4 or Vita version in the works but I’ll get it for the Wii U or on Steam for sure.

I can’t wait to dig into Shovel Knight. There are so many good ideas planted into it! It looks like it will have excellent game design
    in spades!

Getting this for the Wii U to tell the devs that there are people who loves indie games on the system.

Damn, this game is looking pretty good. Definitely gonna pick up the 3DS version when it comes out.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Why is the tag 3DS and Vita if it isnt coming out on Vita?

    • Shuga Suenaga

its ok for the 3DS but yeah there is no vita version coming

    • d19xx

Yeah, I was like WAT? At the Vita tag…

I’m definitely getting this on PC and depending on the price I might double dip for the 3DS version.

EDIT – There’s a 720p 60FPS version of the trailer on their site. I suggest anyone who’s interested in it to check it out.

    YAAAAAAAAACHT CLUUUUUUB!

  • wyrdwad

SUPER PSYCHED. This may be my most anticipated game of 2014.

  • Göran Isacson

Bring on the shovelling. Especially looking forward to the sidestories, even though not having Propeller Knight makes my heart gently weep.

  • Sylveria

This trailer features a distinct lack of Baz.
