Hey, This Indie Game Looks A Heck Of A Lot Like Metroid…

ReVeN is a side-scrolling shooter that looks heavily inspired by the Metroid series, at least aesthetically, and incorporates RPG elements found in games like Deus Ex and Crysis. These take the shape of the game’s “EDM.” mechanic.

“EDM” stands for “Energy Divergence Module,” and it allows you to divert energy into four parts of of your armour—Weapons, Shielding, Mobility and Sensors—similar to the Nanosuit from the Crysis games. Diverting energy to any of the aforementioned areas of your suit will boost that particular aspect.

The trick, however, is that you’ll lose energy in one system to power up another. In order to keep your power supplies up, you’ll need to search for power cores around the world, and this is how the game encourages exploration.

ReVeN will also allow you to switch suits. Suits in the game are called “gears” and each one comes with a different ability, such as allowing you to restore health, add a charge ability to your weapon, speed you up and so on. As you find different gears in the game, you’ll be able to switch between them to tackle different situations.

ReVeN is in development for PC and has a crowdfunding campaign going on Kickstarter. The game itself needs just $18,000 to be funded, but at the $100,000 mark, it will also be developed for Wii U, with another round of polish. At the $200,000 mark, it’ll get a PS4 and Vita release. You can learn more about the game here and vote for it on Steam Greenlight here.

Looked kinda like a cross between Super Metroid and Dead Space to me. I’m interested, so I upvoted it on Greenlight.

    • Shippoyasha

Just the thought alone of those two franchises together is making me very excited. I always loved the darker, creepier moments in Metroid.

I think it’s been a very long wait since the last truly Metroid style game in the Shadow Complex.

    • Ric Vazquez

      I really need a new 2d Metroid

    • k.b.a.

with all of the metroidvanias that come out over the years… doesn’t anyone else just yearn for a good old fashioned metroid? i know it’s a rough thing to say but nothing hits the spot like the classic franchise. i played steamworld dig a bit recently.it’s just not the same. and while i love me some castlevania, i get rather annoyed with all of the reusing of assets in each game, especially those DS titles

  • Farid Belkacemi

I’m definitely interested, even if it looks a little too “cartoonish” for my taste.

  • RagingTiger44

I’d love to play this on the go. I hope it can be released on the vita.

  • ivanchu77

geez, everything needs a kickstarter nowadays, with all the DLC and microtransaction shit we have nowadays in the industry now we are also suposed to pay for games to be developed, screw that

    • Shippoyasha

Good news is that if you donate like 10 bucks, you tend to get the game as well instead of buying it again. It can be better than letting corporate stiffs decide whether a game has the right to exist. Even though the negative of kickstarter can be that they don’t always have the level of oversight of publisher backed titles.

    • PreyMantis

More like we’re paying the game in advance (if you backed enough) rather than it not getting the light of day.

Just imagine if all those cancelled games were on Kicksstarter– they’ll not only be made, you already have the game pre-ordered in advance.

I wanna support it but it just looks waaaay too much with metroid

  • Lalum

    Looks like a flash game.

  • Minos

“If you copy a little its stealing, if you copy a lot its an homenaje”

  • Joseph A. Garcia

What? This looks like a rip of Ghost Song http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192311215/ghost-song-a-journey-of-hope

I know it’s a metroid inspired game, but it seems almost like a direct knock off of Ghost song.

I dunno, I thought it looked a heck of a lot like Metroid Fusion. The suit, the logo, the animations. The developer’s even called “Varia Games”. :P

    • Guest

Funnily enough Ghost Song creator (Also NeoGAF user Jobbs) is promoting this as unsurprisingly she/he loves Metroid-like games :P

Hey! We are friends with the creator of Ghost Song aka Matt White lol He also shared our game via twitter and NoeGaf. He is a cool guy! :) Trust us when we say this, we wont have any similarities to Ghost Song game-play wise or aesthetically. Check it out! :)

Its so nice to see a KS with a trailer. I’ll definitely back if it crosses 200k.

  • Kevin

I’ll upvote it on greenlight but until this thing shows originality I’ll hold back on buying it. I mean isn’t originality what indie games typically boast about?

    oooooooooooooohhhh *___*

So speaking of indie Metroidvanias, who’s psyched about Chasm coming in May?

    • XiaomuArisu

      First time I see that.
Looks nice. The style is charming~

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

Really? I think the KickStarter for it is well past at this point and it has been Greenlit. All that’s left now is the beta period. I think they’re starting it here within the next month or so if you pre-order over Paypal.

I’ve seen streams of it, it’s really neat. A great majority of the game is randomly generated too so it’s never the same game twice.

        • XiaomuArisu

Somehow I avoided it by accident.
          XD
Cant play it but some of my friends may be interested

    • Shane Guidaboni

Forgot about this, honestly. There are so many indie games these days that I lose track of them.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

I hear ya. I try keeping a list in my head of the good ones I remember too. It’s hard considering all the talent out there and KickStarter making them so prevalent anymore.

    • chibidw

Legend of Iya and Ghost Song are both coming later this year, too.

Aye. Ghost Song in particular I’m looking forward to.

  • Shane Guidaboni

The movement of the character is exactly like Samus, down to holding the arm cannon.

  • brostar

“Hey guys! Remember X game? How about Y game? Or even Z game? Well guess what!? We’re ripp… I mean making a homage to those games with our own game. Creativity is too hard for us kickstarter devs so we’ll just cash in on your nostalgia. kthxbai.”

-That was an exaggeration I admit. But I’m getting tired of seeing kickstarter projects which basically mention a bunch of SNES games and then talk about how they were “inspired” by it and it’s a “homage”.

  • DarthSithZero

    Looks good

  • leingod

Should’ve called it MOTREID. Nah, but really… it does look cool. And with Nintendo REFUSING to do another 2D Metroid, I’ll totally take this.

    • PreyMantis

Whoa! When did they ever implied that they refuse to make one? Since Other M?

      • Lalum

        They haven’t.

      • leingod

Well, not flat-out refused, but they don’t seem to be giving the franchise the love it deserves. Believe me, I’ll be among the happiest ones when (if) they announce another one.

        • PreyMantis

Not giving the franchise the love it deserves? How? By not releasing a new game like COD every year? You’re forgetting that this is Nintendo’s first HD console, games will take longer to make than before.

          • leingod

Not every year, but come on… when was the last Metroid game released? 2007? And even if I count Other M (which I usually don’t) it’s still like 4 years since the last one.

I’m not saying I need a Metroid game right NOW, but an announcement, a teaser, anything to suggest they’re even working on one would be nice.

  • RunningWild1984

    This looks pretty good.

  • Kaitsu

I wonder if they’ll have a twist at the end that it’s actually a female character.

  • derpachief

So old school 2D Metroid mechanics + mining element of Minecraft + sneaking from MGS all in one game?! I WANT IT!!!

  • Vash bane

    reads PC – :( I don’t have a good one

    “reads on”

wii U D: ps4 and vita ….don’t care about ps4 but we can all do with more vita titles I was really thinking it looked like a 3ds title so that surprised me

  • Valtiel Ikari

this is actually interesting, I’m in

  • k.b.a.

this just makes me think “metroid franchise is sitting with it’s thumb up it’s butt, not dominating the 3ds as it rightfully should. and more so with the 5 or so [playable] characters they’ve added to the universe in the past ten years

  • Linhua

    … Metroid Inspired huh…?

… looks a lot like Fusion too. That was one of my favorites.

… I will DEFINITELY be keeping an eye on this.
