Gust’s Ar NoSurge Shows Its Battle System

By Spencer . January 27, 2014 . 2:24am

Ar NoSurge brings together elements from Ciel NoSurge, a communication game for PlayStation Vita, and Gust’s RPG series Ar tonelico. The battle system has two characters, an attacker and a song magic user you have to protect. Alpha Ar NoSurge also has a system where you dive into character’s hearts and places to walk around in. Ion and Cas return from Ciel NoSurge in this game with new characters Delta and Ashes.

Ar NoSurge is slated for release on March 6 for PS3 in Japan.

Yesterday they posted the amazing opening movie as well:

    • Pretty sure the op were leaked on youtube for some months ago…
EDIT: Now that I take another look, the animation is a little bit different with the one posted months ago

    • Kai2591

A couple of people in the comments section of the youtube vid keep saying this is a ‘prequel to Ar Tonelico’…..Its NOT, right?

      • aquagon

It is. Shurelia appears with the same appearance she had as a child (according to the light novel description and illustrations), the First Tower shows up in the form it had during the First Era, and the Forest of Shelanoir is even an area that can be visited, though it was already reduced to a field of magma the same year Shurelia was created.

        • Kai2591

…no way..really?…I mean, I know about child Shurelia being in the game, but I thought that’s just because Delta and Cas were sent to Ar Ciel’s past for some reason…? either way, that doesn’t necessarily mean it IS a prequel..

Besides, Ar/Ciel Nosurge takes place on a different planet.

and Forest of Shelanoir? What’s that? Why is that place important? First time I’ve heard of that name…I think..

also, where can I see the First Tower and Forest of Shelanoir that you mentioned?

          • If im not mistaken, I’ve read somewhere that Cas and Delta lived in a different world than AT, then somehow they are being teleport to the AT world (past) where they meet Shurelia.

          • Kai2591

Exactly. That’s what I read too. Doesn’t mean prequel right?
They were sent to Ar Ciel’s past, although their original time is unknown (with respect to the AT series).

          • Yeah, it is either they were sent to Ar Ciel’s past, or Ar surge’s timeline is the set on before AT1 and they were just being sent to Ar ciel without the time traveling thing.

          • Kai2591

Have you read aquagon’s reply above? Prequel it is… O_O
Damn. How the hell did they jump from one planet to another?

          • aquagon

Gust has already said it is: the events depicted in Ar nosurge give further insight on the memories Ion shows the player in Ciel nosurge, and they together end becoming important cornerstones for the story of Ar tonelico. Likewise, they have said that the official timeline so far is: Ciel nosurge -> Ar nosurge -> Ar tonelico.

As for the Forest of Shelanoir, it’s the large forest that existed in the subregion of Syestine (appearing in this game too). Said subregion used to be part of Sol Cluster, until it was completely destroyed in the Seven Bloodstains Incident and the Third Tower was built in the place where it used to be due to giving easy access to the Planetary Core.

And here’s the link where they both appear in screenshot form:

Although we also saw EARTHES walking through the forest and Delta walking inside one of Ar tonelico’s areas in this video.

          • Göran Isacson

Huh, a prequel then? I guess my impression that it was a distant sequel was based on a misunderstanding… kind of a pity since I would have liked to see what the world did after the end of Qoga. I know there’re apparently light novels that act as a sequel, but what can I say: gamers wanna game.

Also I had a small giggle at how, at first, when I clicked that link I saw a big picture advertizing Saints Row IV, and suddenly I imagined the worlds most peculiar cross-over. The Boss as a Reyvateil summoning a rain of deadly dildos with her magic is a highly amusing mental image.

          • Kai2591

            I am mindblown.

If Gust themselves said so, then it must be true…

Wow. When the first few pictures of Ciel Nosurge were shown few years back, I had a small suspicion that it could be a prequel to Ar Tonelico, but further revelations seemed to suggest otherwise….and now its revealed that it IS.

            Utterly mindblown.
            Need to rewire brain nerves.
            EXEC RE=NATION

(and what’s with all these depictions of planets and, most intriguingly, Earth?? what’s the connection?? and is that a spaceship in the vid? If it turns out that all humans in Ar Ciel and Ra Ciela actually came from planet Earth, my mind’s gonna explode. lol)

          • aquagon

It’s just because EARTHES is our avatar in the game, being summoned by Ion in Ciel nosurge and having upgraded the terminal she used to communicate with us into a full-blown robotic body… or at least that’s what theories say now.
But considering we’re also getting other window through which we’ll be watching the events unfold in this game, and all the dimension transfer and wave conversion protocols that can be seen being executed in the game’s opening video, I’d say that it’s a very convincing argument, given that Ciel nosurge already featured teleportation, transdimensional travel and even time traveling.

          • Kai2591

            This is so exciting :)

    • Translation of the beginning text:

A God from far away visited upon this world and created a Utopia.

That song, it was meant to destroy the broken world, however it brought about a great blessing.

      That god’s name is… EARTHES.

Ciel Nosurge’s 「あなた」most likely. I’m guessing they chose the name EARTHES as a play on Planetes (from Latin, meaning Wanderer) to imply a Wanderer from Earth.

      • aquagon

Despite that also being the name used in Ciel nosurge to refer to our world?

        • Haven’t hit a part in CNs where they’ve used a name yet, if they do. My guess has more to do with how Gust generated the name, though. So is a guess for name choice.

Wonder if “-es” is part of the Genom gloss.

.. I really need to go back and get caught up on story, halfway through ch.7.

  • wererat42

Just in case you weren’t sure where to look…

    • Duo Maxwell

      Truly informative.

    • tarbis

      I’m loving the plot already

    • fairysun

But .. but .. I want to enjoy the grass, the rock, the cloud, and the scenery.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

The background looks pretty low res 2/10

    • Crimson_Cloud

If it gets localized by some chance, I can see many ”risky” parts removed. Mugen Souls anyone…?

Anyway, this looks hell a lot better then Ar Tonelico 3, which was in my opinion the weakest of the series.

      • Hikari Langley

Nah, NISA won’t be touching this game. And as from what I seen TemcoKoei doesn’t care for censoring stuff. So if it is released it’ll remain the same.

    • Keksus

THank you. I was confused for a second.

    • Callonia

      Oooh thanks!

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

    Come on localization daruma maken!

  • Ren Yuumei

this game has a battle system? im retarded never mine

  • Best battle system ever lol. The cinematic scenes were awesome. Seriously this game looks fun. Hopefully we’ll get a localization for this one.

  • Crazy_O

Oh my god, not only is the combat system back I liked in AT2 – they also brought back bathing?

But with the recent news I really hope if this comes over it will be with jp voices and uncesored. But since TK apologized the last time they didn’t add jp voices I’m fairly certain that we’ll get them with a localisation. Now let’s hope bathing will be intact and uncensored. If so … all my moneys.

Btw. just remembered tha bathing song from AT2 – it’s glorious:

  • Victor Wesker

I expected to see battle system from Ar tonelico 1, but instead it has battle system similar to Ar Tonelico 2, which i skipped and never played due to worst battle system. In this case I dissapointed and i will skip Ar no Surge because i prefer turn based games without real time elements (Atelier games) or real time action games without turn based elements. I don’t like hybrid battle system with turn based and real time action elements ( FF ATB system). Hope next Gust game will be better with better battle system:)

    • Shippoyasha

I don’t see the issue with hybrid systems personally. Resonance of Fate arguably had one of the deepest combat engine last gen and it was a full on hybrid. The Blitz system for Valkyria Chronicles was 100% hybrid system. They can work and work wonderfully if given proper balance.

    • Nanaya Nazrin

Have fun missing out all the fun.

  • fyi1191

Okay, like what I did in the previous Ar-series. I’m going to aim for the 3rd heroine ending first. (thumbs up)

    • Nanaya Nazrin

If there is one. Looks to me like there two MCs with respective heroines.

If there is a third heroine, then hooray as well. ‘Cause Ar-series third heroines never disappoint.

  • Chido55

Ar Tonelico series has one of the most exotic OST ever conceived in gaming histories (imo). Too bad that I can’t actually play this game but I will surely get my hand on the OSTs.

    • Asaoko

Oh yes! The song magic in this game won’t be hymmnos anymore though. At least, that’s what I heard, but it’s more or less still the same. The samples are out if you’re curious! My personal favorite is that Ciel no Surge(?) one and the one with Noriko Mitose. She’s always so good at singing ‘deviating’ songs. Like Dishadow including Vanisland. ^q^

      • Chido55

I looked up the ones you gave me, but was kinda lost on the titles and whatnot XD
Will look it up again later.

        • Asaoko

Ehehehe sorry! It’s actually CIEL_NOSURGE and EXSPHERE_NOSURGE. They have a CLASS in front of them but I suppose it’s better to be not too specific while googling them. Hope you like them! 8D

      • aquagon

        • Asaoko

Oh hey! And, yeaup, those! They’re hard to remember, but nice all the same. ;D Will you be translating the songs too? D; They’re much more emotional when the meaning is known QAQ

          • aquagon

Yep, you can be sure I’ll be doing that as soon as they’ve been released and I have the lyrics on hand. I just hope that Origa’s songs won’t give me much problem though (as they’re in Russian…)

          • Asaoko

Holyshit, they’ll have Russian this time?! I thought they were the new language… Well, I’m sure there will be someone willing to help out! And thanks for the work you’ve contributed! QAQ

    • We might be able to enjoy both the game and the OST if they localize it. Hope with me lol :3

      • Chido55

        ofc my good sir XD
I really wanted to play all the ATs again, and this for sure. Just taking a safe approach lol

  • Daaamn looking fun!

  • Mir Teiwaz

Just take my wallet GUST. I can’t throw money at the screen fast enough!

  • brostar

After the absolute travesty that was Ar tonelico I hope this game is more like the first and the second. Seriously. Ar tonelico Qoga had an awful battle system with an equally poor localization from NISA.

    • aquagon

Unfortunately, AT3 had the best localization in the series, barring the occasional setting misinformation mistakes (mixed-up and inconsistent terminology being the most frequent one) and the horrendous bug with Tyria’s Binary Field having a VA desync on its best ending path.

      • Kai2591

Ugh. that Tyria binary field end bug….t’was horrible. I had to actually take pictures of the text with my phone while on mute and then replay the whole thing, synching them myself….

  • Nitraion

Yup i think this will be 2 story arc the robot and male MC….
now will they only have 1 person vanguard all the time i hope they can bring variety for that… like most action games out there even 1 person they have variety…
also lol that bondage song magic XD

  • Christopher Nunes

When Ion did her special and run back to the screen to say thanks and kiss the screen… was it implying that the player (who is canonically male) from Ciel no Surge was there to help Ion in battle or still around? Just curious.

This game is looking good and I like the music.

    • The running assumption at this point is that EARTHES (the robot) is “you” from Ciel Nosurge and that following the events in Ciel Nosurge, Ion manages to build “you” a robot frame so you can interact with the world.

And based on the opening movie, I’m thinking that Delta might actually be a Genom, not a person. The lack of Tahbou has me concerned though, still on Chapter 7 of Ciel Nosurge, hoping nothing tragic happens to him.

      • Christopher Nunes

I see, that makes sense. I was thinking along the lines of that as well.

I’m not familiar with Delta or rest of the series sadly. Only Ciel no Surge for the most part. Is Ciel no Surge’s story coming to an end?

        • aquagon

Ciel nosurge’s story is slated to end at Chapter 12, and Chapter 10 is getting released in three days. So I guess it won’t be ending before Ar nosurge gets released.

          • Christopher Nunes

            I see.

Though I wonder, when Ciel no Surge come to an end will TK release it with ALL chapters together for a localized release?

I know it’s skeptically, but I’m hoping for an official localization of Ciel no Surge… it really interest me!

          • aquagon

That’s what we’d like to know. However, I see it as unlikely unless they remove the need to stay connected to Internet at all time when someone is playing the game, and considering how the game also has a heavy social component, I don’t think they would bother doing that.

          • Christopher Nunes

So… best to just import it then? I would prefer being able to read the game and understanding the story and what the characters are saying.

But how did the player Ion and interact with her, seeing as they were not physically there by her side?

          • aquagon

Given Ciel nosurge is pretty much a visual novel, there’s no point to playing it if you’re unable to read to the texts.

As for that, Ion found a strange terminal, repaired it (she is a machine and vacuum tube fanatic) and this is how she and the player meet at the start of Ciel nosurge. The player can see and hear her, but Ion can’t see or hear us, and instead she feels in her hear the replies we give to any of the questions she makes to us, or the things we say to her.

          • Christopher Nunes

Any fan-work translations of the story so far?

Also Ion hears what the players says to her with her heart? I guess that’s why she’s quite close to the player… especially using the terminal to become a robot in this game. But wasn’t she like asleep at the beginning of the game with memory loss?

How did she mention to repair regardless of her memory loss? And how did the player happen to come across Ion like that?

This is what I mean… it’s a really interesting game and concept and it’s a shame the West might never see it in English for them to enjoy.

          • aquagon

None so far. I’d like to do a translation of it myself, or at least write up a summary of the events, but unfortunately a VITA is not something I can buy at the moment, and there’s no footage of the game that I can use to do it past the first chapter.

      • aquagon

As for Delta, the new text adventure they made over at shows he’s amnesiac and Casti tells him that they were childhood friends and have been together for quite a long time. I’d say that this leans greatly in favor of him and Tabou being the same person.

        • Uwah, more stuff I’m behind on. That probably means that Delta is Tabou. Thanks for the link, something else to slog through before March.

  • Kai2591

So many things in that vid that I like, so little time to say it all :)

(eh, you battle 30+ enemies at a time, wave after wave, on some sort of straight lane battle map? Seems like you can do special magic that can inflict damage on the whole lane too….unless I’ve misunderstood those.)

    • aquagon

All Song Magic damages and can kill off all the enemy waves if you let it charge for long enough. Additionally, if you manage to kill all waves during battle without getting the turn limit to run out, you’ll find the pleasant surprise of the encounter gauge dropping to zero in a single battle, allowing you to explore as you see fit.

      • Kai2591

        I see….interesting…

But what happens if the turn limit runs out?

        • aquagon

The game simply counts what you defeated, gives you the rewards for them, and reduces the encounter bar by the number of waves you managed to defeat. Needless the say, the number of waves depends on the number of encounters the area you’re walking through has.

          • Kai2591

            I see, I see.
Glad they’re bringing back the encounter gauge haha~

  • Aldorr

  • Kai2591

Ar Tonelico is the most important game in my whole life. Ever.

So I pray this spiritual sequel, along with Ciel Nosurge, will get localized in English with the full Japanese audio :)

  • Sentsuizan_93

Man, I really am loving what I’m seeing here.
    Ion’s kiss at 3:24…. *o* <3 *nosebleeds*

  • Eric Harris

Gust probably does the prettiest special attacks of all the developers. Which is why I hate in Atelier games that you can’t essentially “save up” special attacks and just watch them all at once. Happy to see a new non Atelier game from them.

  • Liamv2

  • XiaomuArisu

    That item fusion danceXD

    • neocatzon

The guy need to work on his expression.

  • Slayven19

I was kinda hoping that the dominatrix at 2:30 would be playable.

  • Furu Chi

I’m such a fan of Gust. I hope this gets localized

  • Yan Zhao

This is probably the JRPG im looking forward to the most right now…TK hurry up and give us the localization announcement!!

  • Lin

The fighting system resembles that of AT2. Which was my favorite.

  • Anthony Birken

Battle system looks interesting, I’ve been missing out on this series. And as for the part where you are touching the girls? (I have no idea what’s going on there) Is it part dating sim?

    • aquagon

That’s only conversing with them (for extra character development) and inserting crystals in four specific body parts to increase their stats.

      • Anthony Birken

        What a way to play…I mean…increase stats

  • Jindan

Played every of gust game, and was never dissapointed, not with gameplay, story or that perfect music. I demand it to be localized

  • HellMuT

    Hope this gets localized.

  • awat

I hope this game will get localized it looks so fun
