Mario Kart 8 Coming To Wii U In May 2014

By Ishaan . January 29, 2014 . 7:05pm

Mario Kart 8 will be released worldwide for the Wii U in May 2014, Nintendo confirmed during their financial results briefing today.

The game includes new features such as anti-gravity, which has players driving along walls or upside-down.

Additionally, you’ll also be able to capture and upload highlight videos from races to the Miiverse social network.

Wow, that’s quite a delay. You can really see Nintendo’s having trouble getting WiiU games out. Ideally, it would have been a Q12014 release and Nintendo would already be teasing the next wave of new titles.

I guess this is why they rushed out that Dr Luigi minigame.

It sounds like Nintendo have decided they want to see increased use of the gamepad given what was said in today’s financial briefing. They specifically mentioned Mario Kart 8 when talking about this.

I’m only speculating here, but that could be some of the reason the release date is what it is.

I hope it’s not something gimmicky like Gyro controls, really looking forward to this game.

        • mirumu

The only thing specifically mentioned in relation to Mario Kart was some kind of “high speed startup” so you could quickly get playing when not using a TV.

They also want to use near field communication (NFC) with the gamepad in general, although I’m not sure how that would relate to Mario Kart.

MK8 already has gyro control options

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

had that since E3 demos. I played it.

      what delay? May is Spring

  • MrRobbyM

That’s a little later than I anticipated. I was really hoping for a March/April release, but another month won’t kill my hype for the game. Hopefully it’s early May >_>

  • Chaos_Knight

Welp. I know what I’m getting for my birthday now. :)

  • subsamuel01

Disappointed that its so far off, that means if this game is coming in May we won’t see Smash Bros. until fall.

    • Tonton Ramos

or Winter… coz Smash needs more characters til Winter…

    • MrRobbyM

Smash can take it’s sweet time. That game needs to be perfect. Lots of characters, stages, missions, extras. Everything. A Fall or Summer release would be good for it.

I always knew this was going to come out in May. It just looks like a May game for some reason.

  • 하세요

I’m okay with this. Gives me more time to save for a Wii-U.

  • Slickyslacker

Oh. I’d imagine that there’s no January direct. I’d subsequently expect February’s direct to be precipitated by this.

  • SwiftWind

If this doesn’t move Wii U units, I literally have no idea what will.

    • 하세요

Smash Bros will probably be the only other game to have a more drastic impact on Wii-U sales.

      • SwiftWind

Nintendo needs to advertise the heck out of this game if they want their sales to rise. This is the best chance they have; they better make it count.

      • AuraGuyChris

However, I think Mario Kart is far more accessible than Smash Bros is. Probably because there will be more than four players playing the same race.

  • Earthjolly

So a drought after donkey kong…..just what the WiiU needed

    • hng qtr

I guess it’s either drought or rushed and non-finished games.

    • Lucky Dan

I hope they make it like Sonic Racing: Transformed and from the trailers it seems that way.

You don’t know how slow Mario Kart 7 is compared to Sonic Racing: Transformed on the PC guys runs very smooth tight controls and requires lots of boosts and skills to actual win and you can negate items if they randomly fire it unlike in Mario Kart

  • Eder García

delayed or rushed? only time can answer to this

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Not an exact date, but at least we know the month now.

  • Kayriss Wins

Better late then never, Although 4 months from now is pretty steep considering Wii U’s lack off sales already, Mario Kart 8 with be the push I need to actually start playing my Wii U cuz I played MK7 online like crazy.
