Is Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity Getting Pulled In Prep For Phantasy Star Nova?

By Eugene . February 4, 2014 . 3:31pm

Heads up—the PlayStation Store in Japan has put out notice that Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity for the PSP will be pulled off digital store shelves come the 19th of February.

The game—which was released in 2011—is now going for the reduced price of just 500 yen ($5) until then. Take note, however, that the game will only work on a PlayStation Portable and not the Vita.

With Phantasy Star Nova on the way some time this year for the Vita, this sounds like it might be a move in preparation for the arrival of that title. Well, time to retire those Pizza Hut spears, I suppose.

Ugh Sega, stop doing this. >_>

I hope they at least update us on PSN soon-ish

  • Kirbysuperstar2

It’s more than likely the exact reason PSP2 isn’t on the EU/US PSN anymore – rights have expired for the Evangelion/Pizza Hut/KFC/etc stuff and it’s not worth the time and money to renegotiate.

    • Tyler Beale

Since when did they have anything to do with the game? If it’s only in the online space, it’s simple – flip the Vita switch and pull the servers.

      • Kirbysuperstar2

You can get the items in single/local multiplayer mode and via passwords, and IP rights don’t work in a “they’re there but you can’t get them so that’s fine!” way, either.

        • Tyler Beale

You know….I hate how we can’t even play any Phantasy Star games (except 1-4) anymore….well, legally, anyway…

    • MaximDualBlade

I had no idea those things were there. It seems to me that this is the real real reason why the game is being pulled off the psnstore.

  • eilegz

sigh any hope of western localization….

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s PSP and sega, so sadly no..
      the hope is on PSO2

      • ViSyne

Even if PSO2 makes it to English territories, unless it launches with all of the Episode 2 content there will be no point in playing it over the Japanese one. SEGA is doing to that game the same things that ultimately killed PSO and PSU.

    • icecoffemix

For Nova? Since they acquired Atlus, yes there is. Hope I mean.

  • Tyler Beale

I really hate how Sega is shitting all over its franchises, and their fans, that aren’t Sonic related. Sega doesn’t have to put the game back up on the PSN, but I’d really appreciate it if Sega would at least flip the Vita switch on PSPo2.

    • Crevox

      You need to relax

The rappy asks you to calm down

      • Tyler Beale

Heh, thanks – I wasn’t angry or anything, so I updated the post to make it as such.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

I’m pretty sure sonic is america brand only now

    • brostar

Sega of Japan is actually a pretty awesome company right now. So don’t shit on Sega when it’s Sega of America who is shitting over you.

    • Guest

Trust me, Sega is shitting all over Sonic as well.

  • tubers

Can someone explain how this is connected to PS Nova? I don’t get it.

    Sounds like two independent products.

Is there a Policy that only 1 Phantasy Star “Offline” is allowed in PSN?

    • Ferrick

they’re going to use psp2’s servers to host ps nova

      • tubers

Wow.. so PSP2 had their own servers? That’s pretty cool.

  • Sigh

  • Vyse Legendaire

But isn’t Phantasy Star Nova a single-player RPG game, not an online one?

    • Ephidiel

      it’s both

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity,,,oh how much I wanted to play you

  • konsama

Meanwhile we didn’t even get a chance to complain about it. :/

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      Well you got one now

  • ofedenhall

    Needs more Phantasy Star 0-2

    • FB

Ew dude. Phantasy Star 0 was the worst Phantasy Star themed game. It wasn’t even half as good as Phantasy Star Online for Pete’s sake. Bad hit detection, story driven game that requires grinding – just gross. phantasy star portable 2 at least is all the best gameplay parts of PSO combined with PSU.

Which honestly can’t be said that PSO2 is in the same boat. PSO2 is as different as PSU was different from PSO.

The Phantasy Star series has definitely declined in quality since PSO, and it took them like 3 versions of PSU just to get it back to a working formula, which they went and threw away again for PSO2. Why this game is even called Phantasy Star Online 2 when it has about as much relevance to PSO as PSU did (it doesn’t have relevance) is much anyone’s guess. “Phantasy Star Universe 2” is a more logical name for it.

Anyway, Phantasy Star Zero was bad. PSO can be played for free on private servers on PC, so go at least play that game.

      • Trevor Nicolaysen

You realize PSO came after four turn based RPGs right?

        • ChristyKf9

PSU2 would be the better game. I’ve played every game in the PSU game series including Phantasy Star Portable 2 and Portable 2 infinity. Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity is the best game in the entire Phantasy Star series hands down because it has the best of every part of both series. PSO-2 is basically an High Graphic HD MMO version between PSP2 Infinity in PSO style. I like PSO2 but I don’t see why both games couldn’t have been supported and why SEGA of America hasn’t at least shown an interest in convincing SEGA of Japan in getting both games here.

      • brostar

What are you talking about? Phantasy Star Online 2 is the best version of a phantasy star mmo. If you think the original is better then you are clearly blinded by nostalgia. Phantasy star online 2 fixed the awful combat of the original as well as fixed the ship hub world by combining both the lobby and the town with all the shops.
Plus Phantasy Star Online 2 actually bothered to have a story and it works. PSO is still a good game but to say it’s better than it’s improved sequel is just ignorant.
Or maybe… it’s because PSO2 isn’t out in the west so you’re trying to bad mouth it to make yourself feel better because you can’t play it.

        • FB

Isn’t the game riddled with pay to play buy-items. The combat in PSO2 is subjectively better than PSO, but it’s more like PSU than PSO. PSU was terrible by the way. They only got it right with the last two iterations of it, PSP2 & PSP2i.
Risky weapon-upgrading (early PSU), bad animations, generally ugly character designs; the best part of PSU was by far it’s soundtrack but c’mon- that can be purchased separately.

PSO2’s locked camera and mouse-aimed FPS/TPS similarities are also generally ugly to look at. Not representative of a retail quality game at all, and somehow manages to look even worse than PSU, which was a marked decline in presentation compared to PSO.

I mean, come on. Even SEGA knows PSU bombed compared to PSO. Why else would they make a new game in the series and call it “Phantasy Star Online 2”? Merely only to invoke nostalgic fans of the original PSO, and only by name (cause that’s about where the similarities end).
More than that, if the game’s concept and idea were actually good, they would have likely called it yet another Phantasy Star subtitled game instead of explicitly relying on (some) imagery and the well established name of Phantasy Star Online.

PSO2 isn’t really a sequel to PSO at all, even spiritually. It’s just a cash grab run-of-the-mill Korean MMORPG with a sci-fi skin.

    • FB

Actually, a true modern sequel to PS-0 probably wouldn’t be bad, considering it wouldn’t be on the massively underpowered DS handheld. The character design in PS-0 was honestly the best since Phantasy Star Online. It’s probably the most recent Phantasy Star game where Cast Androids don’t look fucking stupid like they do in PSU and PSO2.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

As long as we get get a phantasy I don’t care

  • Kornelious

Well, this re-opened some old wounds :(

  • dragoon_slayer12

Pulling from the store, understandable, but to the remove playability on a system, that’s a dick move…. Shame the game never came stateside, but Nova and PSO2 better

    • Kirbysuperstar2

They didn’t remove Vita compatibility, it never worked on it in the first place.

      • icecoffemix
        • Kirbysuperstar2

That’s Portable 2, not Infinity, and the US or EU version at that. If you bought that from PSN, before it was removed from sale, you can use Download History to put it onto your Vita, yes. The same applies for the Japanese version of Portable 2.

Portable 2 Infinity is a different game and does not work in this manner.

          • icecoffemix

You’ve tried it? How about with the PSP exploit?

Infinity is an expansion of Portable 2 and I really don’t see how it could not run on Vita when it’s on the same base code.

Did they ever explain why it could not?

          • Kirbysuperstar2

Sure, it’s the same base, but a lot of stuff changes between major builds. Even relatively minor changes to engines can have a lot of impact when it comes to emulation (for example how various incarnations of Atlus’ DDS3 engine works in PCSX2, or even the PS3’s PS2 emulator).

I haven’t tried it with the PSP Exploit on Vita, myself and I can’t seem to find anyone that’s tried it, from a quick look around. It might work, but run into weird bugs later down the line which Sony Certification said would need to be fixed for it to be certified as “Vita compatible” and Sega didn’t want to bother with it, or something similar. It’s a shame, in the end, but.. what can you do, really.

          • icecoffemix

Someone’s probably tried it in Japanese only site, but it seems like a case where sega just didn’t bother.

          • dboyz

I’ve tried it in Vita PSP exploit, PSP2i can be played =), so far I never encounter any bugs/crash yet =)

          • icecoffemix

Thanks! Yep, looks like it’s a case where sega just won’t bother for whatever reason. :(

  • natchu96

Beginning to think Kyubey runs this company.

maybe it is because of the whole Pizza Hut and other brands in it. I’m starting to hate cross overs in video games lately
