Batman: Arkham Universe Getting DC Animated Feature

The Batman: Arkham series is getting an original DC animated feature, according to Comic Book Resources, who discovered the news at a premiere for the Justice League: War film.

Justice League: War, which is based on the Justice League: Origin story that was used to launch DC’s “New 52” reboot, is the start of a DC animated universe, producer James Tucker told CBR. The goal, Tucker said, is to release three DC animated features a year—two in the universe of Justice League: War and one in a separate universe.

“Our next movie’s going to be ‘Son of Batman,’ and that Batman will be the same Batman that you see in ‘Justice League: War’,” Tucker said. “Basically, we’ll have two concurrent series of Justice League movies and Batman movies, and they’ll be in continuity with each other. So it’s kind of world-building.”

Since Son of Batman takes place in the Justice League: War universe, the third film scheduled for 2014 will take place in a standalone universe. This film, Tucker says, is titled Batman: Assault on Arkham, and will take place in the world of the Batman: Arkham games.

Justice League: War director Jay Olivia confirmed that Warner Bros. Animation aren’t limiting themselves only to New 52 stories. In some cases, stories could be picked up from other continuities and then made to fit the Justice League: War universe, as is the case with Son of Batman.

“We can do original content, we can do New 52 stuff,” Oliva said. “I still want to do ‘Gotham by Gaslight.’ ‘Red Son’ would be a great one to do as a one-off.”

Hopefully it stands up to the original DC animated universe.

You mean the one just relaunched into the new 52 with “War”?

      • comixsonic

No, the one that existed between Batman:TAS, Superman:TAS, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Jutice League and JL Unlimted.

          And Zeta Project.

Doubt that’s going to happen. It’ll be the New 52 or nothing, sadly.

          • Young Justice actually had the potential to match up to the original DCAU, but sadly that got cancelled. It was such a great show, too. Bah.

It’d be awesome is they ended up turning Gotham by Gaslight into a film. Such a shame that game was cancelled.

While I’m not crazy about a Batman heavy year, I’m ecstatic to hear they’re making a new DCAU canon tying the movies together

Its the Year of the Batman!

I first heard about this when Son of Batman was announced so I came here hyped and expecting another Arkham animated feature. Still, just watched JLW a couple of days ago and it didn’t disappoint, so much… Really looking forward to SoB and AoAA.

I remember this being mentioned in Variant Comics. He talked about War, Son of Batman, and an Arkham game-related movie. That was all the details back then.

Kinda wondering what they’ll do after the Arkham movie. War hinted at the second Justice League storyline so that might be the next thing. I happily buy each of the animated movies as they come out so I’m looking forward to whatever they end up doing.

I’d, personally, like to see some of the storylines with Dick as Batman. I really liked how different he handled being Batman, and the part where he was partnered with Damian.
