The Batman: Arkham series is getting an original DC animated feature, according to Comic Book Resources, who discovered the news at a premiere for the Justice League: War film.
Justice League: War, which is based on the Justice League: Origin story that was used to launch DC’s “New 52” reboot, is the start of a DC animated universe, producer James Tucker told CBR. The goal, Tucker said, is to release three DC animated features a year—two in the universe of Justice League: War and one in a separate universe.
“Our next movie’s going to be ‘Son of Batman,’ and that Batman will be the same Batman that you see in ‘Justice League: War’,” Tucker said. “Basically, we’ll have two concurrent series of Justice League movies and Batman movies, and they’ll be in continuity with each other. So it’s kind of world-building.”
Since Son of Batman takes place in the Justice League: War universe, the third film scheduled for 2014 will take place in a standalone universe. This film, Tucker says, is titled Batman: Assault on Arkham, and will take place in the world of the Batman: Arkham games.
Justice League: War director Jay Olivia confirmed that Warner Bros. Animation aren’t limiting themselves only to New 52 stories. In some cases, stories could be picked up from other continuities and then made to fit the Justice League: War universe, as is the case with Son of Batman.
“We can do original content, we can do New 52 stuff,” Oliva said. “I still want to do ‘Gotham by Gaslight.’ ‘Red Son’ would be a great one to do as a one-off.”
