Ace Attorney, DuckTales And Dead Rising 3 All Did Well For Capcom

By Ishaan . February 7, 2014 . 9:30am

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, Resident Evil: Revelations and Dead Rising 3 have all achieved their projected sales, Capcom said in a financial results report last night.

Additionally, Monster Hunter 4, as previously announced, has surpassed the company’s estimates by a large margin, while online game Monster Hunter Frontier G is “performing steadily”.

Capcom also stated that DuckTales Remastered, developed by WayForward Technologies for the western market, performed better than expected.

Finally, browser game Onimusha Soul is a hit in Taiwan, having debuted at the top of the charts, and is helping Capcom establish a foothold in the region, while Smurfs’ Village is maintaining its popularity and “providing stable income”.

Not all titles performed as admirably, however. Capcom say that sales of Lost Planet 3 were below expectations in part due to “intensifying competition in the European and North American markets”. Meanwhile, mobile games did not achieve the expected level of sales, due in part to “lack of major titles and the fierce competition”.

As a result of the above, Capcom’s net sales increased to 75,221 million yen (up 3.5% from the same term last year) in the 9 months of fiscal year ending March 31st, 2014. Meanwhile, operating income decreased to 8,521 million yen (down 13.4 % from the same term last year), while net income for the current period decreased to 5,957 million yen (down 10.3 % from the same term last year).

Excellent to hear about Ducktales and Phoenix Wright. While I’m no business major guy, I hope NA’s Phoenix Wright numbers were large enough to consider more in the future (and possibly an eshop release of Miles Edgeworth 2… *wink wink nudge nudge Capcom* Wayforward, while most of their games seem to be licensed, they’re decent games, and Ducktales was pretty good. Hope to see them do more like Chip and Dale remake or something.

    • Shippoyasha

I am hoping against hope for a physical Phoenix Wright release even now…

      • kthanxyousuck

I hope we at least get a physical release of Layton vs Wright.

        • resuri

I think PL vs AA will be in physical since Level 5 was the one who handled the localization.

          • Swison

            That’s probably most likely

        • Kumiko Akimoto

I’m just glad we are getting it

    DUCKTALES! Oh WOOWHO!

    • Slayven19

Seriously though, good for capcom being happy with Phoenix wright sales.

  • subsamuel01

Glad to see Ducktales did well, I bought the physical disc for my 360. Hopefully they give other classics the same treatment. Not suprised at Lost planet 3, I think it was expected to bomb from the day it was announced.

  • surakian

(Now, do physical release on Capcom Store for AA5!)

I’m glad AA5 sold what they wanted it to. I hope that inspires them to release AAI2 to the west because we all still actually do what that game.

That is fantastic about Ducktales, too. I still need to pick up a copy, but I hope to see them do more remasters of retro games.

That’s good news! Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is awesome and I hope the sequel gets localized too!

  • ThatGuy3190_7

With the reasons for poor sales, it seems as if Capcom didn’t scope out the competition well enough.

  • British_Otaku

Lost Planet 3 did pretty awful in Japan as well… >_> Perhaps I’m lazy and haven’t read the whole report, so they did mention that though.
Good to know Ace Attorney, DuckTales among others did well. Perhaps we will see them call up WayForward more often to revive their old projects with their animated and musical magic.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Yes Monster Hunter was a major success “proving overwhelmingly popular”

  • Brimfyre

DuckTales 2, Chip ‘n Dale, and Darkwing Duck next please…..

    • greg_67

Have WayForward continue to HD remake the sequel and those mentioned and I’m game.

  • dam4rus

Well, ever since Phoenix Wright is released I see it on the best seller list of eShop, so i’m not surprised at all. Good for them, now release Investigations 2…

  • Kolibri

Less Lost Planet and more Ace Attorney ? I take it.

  • Audie Bakerson

The games that were actually good (or in DR3′s case, rode a dry console launch) and mostly complete instead of being spliced apart for DLC actually made them money while the ones that were half finished and rubbish didn’t? If we needed more proof Capcom is not a learning animal (after the whole no PC Dragon’s Dogma thing…) this is it.

  • MasterScrub

So all of Capcom’s game that were actually GOOD met sales expectations? That’s good to hear.

  • Lynx

-Capcom say that sales of Lost Planet 3 were below expectations in part due to “intensifying competition in the European and North American markets”.

It’s odd when a spin off feels more like a Lost Planet game than a numbered game does. 3 did not feel like a LP game at all, and I’m a huge fan of the franchise.

    • Shippoyasha

They blame mobile games market for their games on mobile not doing that well. Maybe they shouldn’t have released horrible ports and lackluster titles on mobile instead.

They should focus on making unique and compelling experiences like Dragon’s Dogma which I hear did very well for them in 2013.

  • NeoPancho

Great news about about Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, it was one of my top 3 3DS games of 2013 (Fire Emblem, MH4 and AA: DD)… hopefully we get a new game.

  • http://keiserone.tumblr.com/ KeiserOne

So Capcom next time you don’t bring Ace Attorney over here, we’ll know it’s because of pure evil and not because past title didn’t sell :)

  • Lilith

Any word on how MH3U did in america?

    • Fujisawa Ruuzaa

Apparently it did very well enough to convince capcom to release MH4U in the west.

  • pimpalicious

I’m glad to hear that Duck Tales did well. Hopefully D&D Chronicles of Mystara didn’t tank, I notice that didn’t get a mention.

  • hazelnut1112

So does this mean that Wayforward will make another Disney NES game (Darkwing Duck please) or Ducktales 2 Remastered?
I would prefer the later since I did enjoy Ducktales 2 more than the first game.

  • Göran Isacson

Because I’m curious: what is the difference between operatin income, and net income?

  • Aoshi00

That’s good to hear.. would’ve been nice if Dual Destinies had physical as well (when AA x Layton got one), now no more excuses for not releasing another AA game or digital only :) Loved Ducktales remake as well, surprisingly even more so than the Castle of Illusion remake.. Dead Rising 3 was a great game as well, couldn’t play the first two because of the harsh time limit.. would wait for price drop to get the 4 DLC chapters though..

Provided that the game met expectations “worldwide” and not just in Japan (they don’t specify), part of the reason for that could be that people bought the game precisely because it was cheaper and a download title.

I can say I personally wouldn’t have been comfortable buying AA:DD for $40, and I love nearly every game in the series. $40 is a little too high for a game that I’ll rarely replay, IMO

      • Aoshi00

That’s true, wonder how many people used their $30 eshop credit from fire emblem and SMT for this.. Maybe Layton is a bigger brand and puzzle games are better value.. Still I wish they had offered even a limited physical release option to those who don’t mind paying a bit more, I would gladly pay $40 since I have both original and xl so I could play on both, maybe Ninty would fix their account system one day.. at least I got the Jpn ver to still have my collection, buy yeah it’s hard for me to play thru the eng ver again right after finishing the Jpn ver, i’m still at the yokai village.. Still this is not my fav because it’s too hand holding.. Also luckily the game s not big, I always buy disc to save space on memory card or HDD, like vita, 16gb so not enough :(

  • Alestaos

I hate the fact im yet to play or buy Ace Attorney for the 3DS i love the series but with it only being digital i dont know wheter it would fit on my 4GB card or if i needed another one and if so what size and what make. I suck at getting these cards i tried to get a 32GB one for my Vita only to come home and find out that the one the guy sold me was 100% wrong and didnt fit the area. So im always hesitant now especially since money is tighter and i live in the EU and these cards seem overpriced in retail stores. Thing is i love the Ace series so would be willing if i knew its GB size and which card to buy. I hate digital only….the reason why i was trying for my vita was so icould get the aletier series..

    • Satori Satya

Dual Destinies only needs 4,432 blocks. If you have a 4GB SD card, that means that it has around 30,000 blocks. More than enough space for the game.

BTW, you should upgrade your SD card to at least a 16GB (they’re cheap @ £10 at most places). That way you won’t have to deal with these issues. I own a 32GB SD card and I have several games on it. Still have a crazy amount of space left.

P.S. Vita uses a proprietary memory card. Regular SD cards won’t fit on it and neither will it take PSP cards.

  • Yan Zhao

So how about bringing Ace Attorney Investigations 2 over Capcom!?

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I’m happy to hear that their consoles games did great while the mobile phone games failed to have the success they excepted. That will make them think better before spending 40 million dollars on mobile phone gaming like they were planning to.

  • leingod

Love Ace Attorney, Duck Tales and Dead Rising 3. I own the three. Lost Planet though… ugh, I don’t even know why there’s a third game in that series.
